  • JROTC—NOVEMBER 13TH PROGRAM

    THANK YOU - VETERANS

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniver-sary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day–a common misunder-standing, according to the U.S. Department of Veter-ans Affairs. Memorial Day

(the fourth Mon-day in May) honors

American service mem-bers who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Vet-erans Day pays tribute to all American veterans–living or dead–but espe-cially gives thanks to liv-ing veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. 9.2 million veterans are xxxover the age of 65. 1.9 million veterans a

under the age of 35. 1.8 million veterans are

    women. 7.8 million veterans

    served during the

Vietnam War era (1964-1975), which represents 33% of all living veterans.

5.2 million veterans served during the Gulf War (representing service from Aug. 2, 1990, to present).

2.6 million veterans served during World War II (1941-1945).

2.8 million veterans served during the Korean War (1950-1953).

6 million veterans served in peacetime.

  • Government officials and citizens take advantage of the Historical Society reference material when consid-ering new projects or looking up area or family history. Out of town visitors to the Museum learn about our city and surrounding area.

Your membership and support allows the Historical Society and Museum to function at its highest level. It keeps the doors open and with enough support, might allow those doors to be open more frequently. More importantly, your membership guarantees the future of Manteca’s treasure. Some 80,000 people have dis-covered the Manteca Historical Museum. Won’t you do the same.

Please join, or renew your membership to the Mante-ca Historical Society and Museum for 2015!

    DRIVE BEGINS Now!!!

Why renew your membership or become a member of the Manteca Historical Society and Museum? Because its members own the Museum and the Museum receives no operational funding from the city, county, state or federal governments. Doors are kept open through membership dues, memorial donations or other contributions. The Museum has one part-time employee, with most of the everyday duties handled by volunteers.

Keeping the Museum open, four days a week, costs money. For example: Utilities average $700 per month and the monthly newsletter sent to mem-bers is another $300 per month. The Museum is used by a variety of people. School children often tour the facility, families and schools hold reunions and local organizations hold meetings at the Muse-um.

  • As many know, one of the worst attacks on a U.S. fleet took place on De-cember 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor.

One of those who sur-vived was George Murphy, Jr. who would later follow his father George Murphy as a newspaper editor and publisher of the Manteca Bulletin.

Here, in the upper right photo, George Murphy, Jr., still recovering from inju-ries, received the “Warrior of the Week” award from California Governor Earl Warren, for being a survi-vor of the U.S.S. Oklahoma sinking.

    ARMY FIELD MESS-LOCKER

Most of us take things like dinnerware and eating uten-sils for granted, but in the combat field of WWII and other engagements, it was different. Shown here is a vintage U.S. Army mess-locker used by Robert Dinsdale Evans, who served in the Medical Service Corp for 33 years, achieving the rank of full colonel. On display in the military exhibits of the museum. -Donated by Larry & Ann Evans

  • Considering the fact that so many Ameri-cans have served our country, some hav-ing given the ultimate sacrifice, it is appro-priate for us to bring our membership’s attention to the museum’s military exhib-its during this month of November, when we honor our Veterans, and then give thanks for what we have on Thanksgiving Day.

Perhaps this holiday season is a great time to stop by and checkout your museum’s military displays, generously donated by local families and friends.

    MEMORIAL & HONOR ROLL PROGRAM

This is a very significant way to remember those who have passed away, or to honor one for a special event, or tribute. All gifts are tax deductible, and the names of those remembered are then inscribed in the ”Honor Roll Book”, which is on permanent dis-play at the museum. Printed form-envelopes are available at the museum, and on the museum’s web-site. Click on the Memorials tab at: www.mantecamuseum.org, or call Clancy Rogers at the museum, (209)825-3021 for more information.
