News briefs

From Clancy Rogers, Manager

The Historical Society congratulates the Convention and Visitors Bureau

and new CEO Virginia Camacho for successfully hosting Manteca’s Spring Sidewalk Fair downtown April 5th and 6th. It is a large job, and the CVB and board has accomplished another worthy event for Manteca!

Membership drive- has produced nearly 500 Histori-cal Society supporters so far for 2014. Thank you!

Finances– We received a number of donations and memorials in April. We appreciate all, and especially the memorial gifts in honor of so many good people.

Program Meetings- Chili tasting, Water History by Jeff Shields of SSJID, and Healthcare by Nicholas Tejeda of Doctors Hospital, and an April program by Karen McLaughlin, Manteca’s City Manager have topped our schedules so far for 2014. We look forward to the Manteca Police Department and their K-9 team on May 8th, at 7pm at the Museum.

A new street sign project was headed up by the Jr. Chamber of Com-merce in 1948, and approved by the City Council. JCs presenting some of the signs at the Sportsmen’s Festival were, from left to right; Larry Tinker, Lee Phillips, Charles Whelan and Antone Raymus.

Students from Sequoia Elementary enjoyed their Museum tour recently, here learning about Manteca’s first new fire truck from docent, Alan Marsden. Call for a tour!

Although l am happy to serve as the Society’s president, it will be bitter-sweet not to have Leon

as our leader. We pre-sented him with a well-deserved outgoing presi-dent’s award, and he even received a trophy for bringing in new mem-bers in his so-called lame-duck year! I can’t say enough good about him, and Liz, for that matter. Even last year while nurs-ing a sore leg, he was still here on crutches to stay engaged for the good of our cause. I’m not quite sure Liz approved of that!

Well, it is my turn to take the helm, though I be-

lieve, as a group, it takes many to make a difference around the Museum.

As with any other organiza-tion, building for the fu-ture is a key to it’s success.

We have a wonderful group of volunteers and supporters , and I look for-ward to our ongoing efforts to keep history alive and well in Manteca.

By the way, if you have an interest in volunteering for events, work crews, or be-coming a docent, we need you!

It’s official, President Le-on handed off the gavel after 6 years as the His-torical Society’s Presi-dent.

Outgoing President Leon presents Gayl Wilson with an award for her service as board secretary.

Although our official 2014 Membership Drive ended last month, we are pleased to continue re-ceiving annual renewals and new memberships, as the year moves ahead. Our total membership is now right at 493, with 68 new members so far this year. Again, thanks so

much for your ongoing support with member-ship, and our special events!

Please remember to invite friends and visitors to visit the museum!

Our 2014 Membership Drive ended in March with nearly 68 new supporters, and these two recruiters headed up the lion’s share of new memberships dur-ing the drive. Anita Hand-ley and Jeanie Marden have been our Member-ship Queens for 2014 and both received trophies, as did Clancy Rogers and Le-on Sucht for their efforts in the new member drive!

Outgoing Historical Society President Leon Sucht recently presented Toinette Rossi, Exec. VP & Director, from left , and Phyllis Abram, Operations Officer, of Delta Bank with a plaque for ongoing support of the Historical Society and Museum. Phyllis has also been a long-standing docent and volunteer for the Museum.

Manteca Union High was built in 1923 and attended by many stu-dents throughout the years. Although the build-ing was eventually demol-ished in 1969, it is shown here in replica form,

crafted by long-time Man-tecan and Historical Socie-ty member, Sam Bologna, who presented it to the Manteca Museum where it is on permanent display.
