    AADIVELLIKKILAMAI - 2010 A glimpse (Flashback)- Report from Chairperson’s desk

    The last Friday of Aadimasam, ‘Aadivellikkilamai’, - veryauspicious and busy festival - was celebrated by themembers of the Mandayam Srivaishnava Sabha on 13thAugust 2010 at Sri Ramanuja Samskrithi Bhavana,Sampige Road, Malleswaram.Commencing from 10.00 am, the presence of ladies inColourful Madisharu pudavai and Men in Katche panche.Shelya and Oordhwa Pundram (Tiruman kappu) addedmore traditional look to the festival.

    prasadam in Sri Lord Narasimhaswamy’s Sannidhi inSri Yadugiri Yathiraj Matt, the Goshti with Sri Andal wasreceived at the entrance of Sri Ramanuja SamskritiBhavana with a traditional aarathi by ladies. The mirrormantapam was placed on a decorated table in SriAnanda Krishna Hall. The ladies lighted the Pachamavughee vilakku prepared by many volunteers and kept infront of Andal’s Idol. The glowing hundreds of Vilakkupresented a devotional temple atmosphere. Smt. MuktaH.O. Rajagopal had made a throne using raw bananaleaf decorated beautifully with roses. Sri Andal’s idolwas kept on the throne and this was placed in front of

    Rangamani Thirumalai, followed by Welcome by Smt.Indira Parthasarathy, Vice-president of the Sabha.The Goshti consisting of many ladies and gents chantedSri Andal’s Thiruppavai led by Vidushi Smt. Rama

    Srinivasan and Vidwan Sri M.D. Srinivasan. Chi. RakshitMandayam from Irvine, Los Angeles, son of Smt. Malini

    and Sri M.V. Ramanand and grandson of Smt. Sarojaand Sri M.B. Varadarajan sang three South Indianclassical songs: Oruthimaganai Pirandu, a Pasuram fromThiruppavai in the Raag Behag set to Aditala, followedby a Purandharadasara Devaranama “Govinda” in theRaag Shiv Kalyan set to Aaditala, taught by VidushiSmt. Ranganayaki Rajan. He concluded the vocal recitalwith a Bhajan in the raag Bhoudi set to Aaaditala taughtby his Guru Smt. Padma Kutti in Irvine, Los Angeles.

    Chi Rakshit Mandayam presented another South Indianclassical composition “Sada Palaya” in the Raag Mohanaset to Aditala on the Western Instrument Saxophone.This is the first time in the history of MandayamSrivaishnava Sabha’s cultural programmes, a rareinstrument Saxophone is played and I don’t think anyother member of our community has learnt thisinstrument. There was a pin drop silence and theaudience cheered with a big applause as a mark ofappreciation.Though brought up in America, 12 year old Rakshit’saccent of Tamil and Kannada was perfect in renderingthe songs. The enthusiasm shown by him and theencouragement towards his interest by his parents in

    bringing up his talents in our Indian traditional classicalmusic is highly commendable.Bharatha Natyam by Smt. Hema Srinivasan, daughterin law of Smt. M.O. Kamala and Sri M.O. Ramanujam,and daughter of Smt. Rukmini and Sri M.N. Ramanujamof Chennai was another unique attractive item. She hadselected first five Pasurams from Andal’s Thiruppavai.Sri Andal Thiruvadihaley SharanamAndal also known as ‘Kodai’ is the incarnation of ‘BhoomiThayar ’. ‘Tiruppavai’ the hymns sung by Andalexemplifies her intense love to Lord Krishna, theincarnation of Lord Narayana.     almighty is worshipped by all his devotees in his fiveforms. In Thiruppavai, the first five songs describe thesefive forms namely:a) Parathvam - The supreme abode; b) Vyuham - TheMilky Ocean; c) Vibhavam - The incarnation; d)Aantharyamithvam - Dwelling Within; and Archai - Theidol form.

    The first song ‘Narayanane Namakke Paraitharuvaan’describes ‘Parathavam’; The second song ‘ParkdalilPaiyathuyindra Paramanadi Paadi’ tells about ‘Vyuham’;The third song ‘Ongi Ulaga Alainda Uttaman Peyar Paadi’explains the ‘Vibhava’ stage; The fourth song ‘AazhiMaghai Kanna’ speaks about Aantharyamithvam’ and

    the fifth song Vada Madurai Maindanai describes the‘Archai’ stage.In the above songs Andal assumes herself to be a Gopikaand invites all her friends to join her in performing herPavai Nombu to seek the Blessing of Lord Narayana thealmighty.The presentation was very good and the membersappreciated with a big applause.

    Vrindavanathe Kandome of Sri Andal’s “NachiyarThirumozhi” presented with a combination of Kummiand Kolattam in the form of dance, was choreographedby Smt. Hema Srinivasan and was very apt to thefestival.

    A special feature of this years’ Aadi VellikkilamaiAll the ladies were given Vethale Pakku in a welldecorated silk bag with an attractive designed base onwhich a pair of Thiruvadighal was fixed as a symbol of“Andal Thiruvadighal” and a blouse piece donated byan honourable member. Besides thanking the membersfor their contribution by cash and kind, the Secretarythanked the team of ladies who gave blouse pieces forbags. About 300 bags and 300 bases were stitched inabout a month for the festival.     This year’s Tulamasa Snanam trip was arranged on Sunday the31st Oct. We went to Sangam near Mekedatu, where Arkavathiand Kaveri merge. We had arranged 2 buses and about 85 peoplemade the trip.

    The Sabha had realised about Rs 7 lakhs from the sale ofassets of Late Tippani Applachar and Sreerangamma of Mysore.Mr Ramakant ,who is their legal heir living in Germany and hiscousin Mr T A Prabhakar desired, that we should donate Rs 4lakhs to some useful community purpose beneficial toMandayams.

    Sabha took the decision to donate Rs 4 lakhs, towards theHall being constructed above Sharaddha Bhavan, by the YathirajaMutt for conducting functions by the Mandayams. This Hall hasnow been completed, and the formal Vasthu Pooja was held onSunday the 21st Nov 2010.

    A suitable Granite tablet with the name of the Donors will befixed in front of the hall.

    Sreenivasan(popular as MC) who is living in Los Angeles, USAfor over 35 years visited Sabha. During his 3 months stay, heregularly visited the Sabha and interacted with members andalso attended various functions like Adi Vellikilamai etc. Whenhe expressed a desire to bring back nostalgic memories by meet-ing Basketball players who used to play during his time, weidentified nearly 35 old timers, young and old and invited them.

    As there was more rain on the upstreamside, the river Arkavathi had to becrossed by Coracles ( Circular Basketboat) which was very thrilling at the sametime risky. All the people after crossing,took holy dip in the river KaveriWe came to Kallhalli Sreenivasa temple,near Kanakapura and had an excellentDarshan at this beautiful temple whichis nearly 8oo yearold. We had arranged

    for Lunch at this temple. and returned by evening.

    There was a very good bon homie and everybody exchangedpleasantries and MC was particularly happy to meet his old pals.The Chatrapathys had arranged an excellent dinner and the re-union was really a grand and memorable one.

    2010 at the residence of Srikant Chatrapathy and MaduraChatrapathy, who were perfect hosts for the gathering of over30 basketballers, which included M A S Rajan, who is nearly 80years and other old timers like Subbanna, Betaraya,Sudhindra,Sreenath, Dwaraki, Amarpal, Rangaraj, Jayasimha etc.

    MANDAYAM SOCIALS - 2010This year the Mandayam Socials is being celebrated with sports and competitions in talents, as hasbeen the tradition of our Sabha. The events will be spread over the week ends commencing from20th November 2010 and will conclude with the cultural programme on 2nd Jan 2011. Theseevents, which are largely attended, provide an excellent opportunity for the community membersto meet, interact, share and socialize, in what otherwise would be a busy, tightly scheduled,mechanical and some what routine life. No wonder that our members eagerly look forward to thesemeets. (Reports by Ms. Ramya Srivas and M.A. Dwaraki)

    DRAWING AND PAINTING COMPETITIONS

    Competitions on the eve of the annual culturalprogrammes hosted by the Sabha began on the 20thof Nov. 2010 with drawing and painting competitions

    colour painting for the next category and greetingcard designing for the ten to fifteen year olds.Adorable and independent little children (the under-five category) exhibiting their eagerness for doingwhat most of them like doing best, was a wonderfulsight. And some did hold a reasonable span ofattention considering their age and their easyvulnerability for distractions. Their task was to coloura football with crayons. The next age-group was asked to water-colour aballoonwallah and the children did dress him and hisparaphernalia in vibrant colours.The older group was given a slightly more complextask of making a greeting card which involvesdesigning the layout, planning the content andexecuting the idea in presentable form. Theadolescents did prove their worth.for children and pot painting and photo-frame making

    competitions for adults.Children were divided into three groups – under fiveyears, ages six to nine years and ages ten to fifteenyears and were assigned age-appropriate activitieslike crayon colouring for the under-five group, water

    BADMINTON TOURNAMENT

    The response was overwhelming with a recordhundred participants for the event. There were someformer champions who felt their dormant energiessurge up at the thought of wielding their racquetslike a sword and some others who had come tosocialize with others and watch the game at theRotary Club Badminton Court, Malleswaram. It wasa refreshing break from routine for the Bangaloreresident ‘Mandayam’ites on Sunday the 21st of

    November 2010! Age or agility or the lack of it wasno bar - the only eligibility criterion was to belong tothe single large family called ‘Mandayam’.

    At least ten youngsters had to miss the event toattend a state level tournament. There were sevenunder fifteen boy’s teams, six under eighteen girls’teams, twenty-three men’s teams, and fifteenwomen’s teams.

    There was a crowd of three enthusiasts for theunder ten boys’ category who were encouraged toplay their match. The semi-final and final matches inall categories were quite action and power packedevoking exclamations from the audience. Prizes weregiven away by Smt. Bharati Srinivasan, a former statelevel badminton champion.

    Breakfast and lunch served at the venue helpedsustain the energy levels of the organizers andparticipants. The matches were justly and ablyrefereed by Sri Shesha Narayan, Sri M.A. Sudarshan,Sri Simhan and Sri R.M. Srivas in parts. SriRamprasad, Sri Jayasimha, Sri M.A. Dwaraki, Sri M.K.Narasimhan and Sri M.K. Srinivasan simply made theday happen

    THROW BALL AND VOLLEY BALL TOURNAMENT

    These events were held at the Chamundi Scout Grounds,Malleswaram, Bangalore. However there was a steep drop inthe response from participants pitched against the over-whelming response for Badminton held on the precedingSunday. There was throw-ball for women, volley-ball for men,volley ball for women on demand and throw ball for enthusiasticchildren on a mini court.For throw ball, there were three teams of six each, where twoplayed the preliminary round and the third snatched anopportunistic ‘bye’. The players of the two teams were:

    Throw ball for the under-tenThis was the highlight of the day. Enthusiastic little childrenaccompanying their parents to the venue who were initiallycontent with engaging themselves in their own little play weresoon dismayed at having nothing to do after tiring of their owngames. So a spontaneous idea took shape to make way for alittle throw ball game on a mini court.

    There were ten children divided into two teams and here belowis the winning team: Madhav Krishnan, Anup Makaram,Priyanka, Sudarashan.M.K., Keshav Manikernika

    Of course pongal for breakfast and ‘Kolambu sadam’ and ‘thairusadam’ for lunch were the two life-saving gifts from the Sabha.Referees were Vasu, Srivas, M.K.Narasimhan, Sudershan andothers who did a just job.And the strong support system behind all the events is definitelyable Mrs.Kuntala, Sri.Dwaraki, Sri.M.K.Narasimhan, Sri.SheshaNarayan, Sri.M.D.Jayasimha,Sri R M Srivas, Smt.Jaya Char,

    The number of participant entries was twelve and the themewas ‘elephant and lamps’. It was held on the 27th of Nov. at theYathiraja Mutt, Bangalore. Well, elephants are worshipped and

    lamp-lighting is thought to dispel darkness and with it evil. Theprize-winning art works were well drawn out. The first prizewinning entry was a homogeneously pleasing picture with all

    the elements doing their bit to make the rangoli attractive in itsentirety. There was a sizeable crowd of sixty, eager to take alook at the artworks.

    The consolation prize went to Smt.Ambuja, third prize to Smt.Sudha Balaji, second prize to Smt. Vijayalakshmi and the firstprize was for Smt.Rajani Rajesh. The entries were well judged

    by Smt.R.A.Sudha Madhusudan (daughter-in-law of lateSri.R.A.Krishna Swamy and Smt.Dwaraki) from Jayanagar andSmt. Lakshmi Srinivas (daughter-in-law of R.A.Susheela). The

    The theme of display was "Salt & Khara preparations with Bakery / Home made breads". The response wasoverwhelming. There were as many as 30 contestents. Judges Smt Kala Charlu & Smt Indu nee Vijaya Singlacharhad very tough time in judgeing with so many delicious preparations. The prize winners are:1. First Prize: Smt Sujatha Vasu - Cold Delight2.     It is very unfortunate that we had very poor responce for Sloka competition except for three youngsters all 5years age. Their parents had coached them very well and the boys recited without any stage fear, with someprompting from the Judges Shri U Ve M D Srinivasan Swamy and Sri U Ve G K Rajagopalan Swamy. Judgesawarded the prizes to all three contestents as follows:1. First Prize Master Giridhar A N2. Second Prize Master Srihari Y G3. Third Prize Master Avyukth.Shri U Ve M D Srinivasan Swamy thereafter explained the meaning of the Shlokams of BHAJA GOVINDAM.We had a surprise eminent visitor from Chennai - Shri U Ve Dr M A Venkatakrishnan Swami - He gave a shortUpanyasam on Sri Shankara Bhagawathpada & BHAJA GOVINDAM. Dr Venkatakrishnan Swamy gave away theprizes to winners. While giving a vote of thanks, Sri M A Dwaraki, our Secretary informed that an Endowment of Rs15,000 has been given to Sabha by Smt M O Kamala of Chennai to give suitable Prizes in Devaranama & Shlokacompetition every year.

    Cricket Tournament

    The cloudy sky and cold weather didnot deter the bravemandayams to come out of their cosy homes to theJunior College for Boys Ground at 18th cross,Malleswaram. After a nice and piping hot breakfast ofAvalakki upma and coffee, the volunteers started regis-tering the names. By about 11 am, we had registered

    about 80 people under mens category, 50 under womenscategory and about 30 for the under 15 years category.That means we had a total of nearly 160 participantsand in addition we had nearly 100 people to cheer. Theoldest player was Mr M D Srinivasan who is 82 yearsyoung.

    All the matches were very keenly fought and one couldsee the excellent festive spirit prevailing and involve-ment of the players. There were 8 teams for men, 5teams for women and 6 teams for juniors. The matches

    were played under knock out method and limited overs.The matches were simultaneously played in 3 places asthe time was short and every shot and wicket wascheered by the boisterous crowd. In order to save timethe game was not stopped while lunch was served. Thespecial Vangibhath and curds rice was very tasty andliked by one and all.

    M.A. Narasimhan (Kishore)Bangalore-based Softwarecompany - PK4 SoftwareTechnologies which has developeda hand-held device for ruralhealthcare and microinsuranceapplication - has been recentlyselected as a winner in NASSCOM’sAppFAME Contest.

    This device called ImpelCARE, is ahand-held-based tele-medicineand microinsurance application

    and represents the frontier of rural healthcare delivery. The program is administered by Village HealthChampions (VHCs) - women from local villages whoare familiar with customs and people have been trainedto use its simple local-language interface, while doctorsand clinicians use either an English version of the samething or a deeper web-based Software-as-a-Service(SaaS) equivalent. Working with CARE Foundation andother stakeholders, ImpelCARE uses technologicalinnovation to provide high-quality healthcare servicesto patients in remote villages, simultaneously keepingcosts low.

    The hand-held device helps VHCs track patient info,provide primary healthcare, record vital statistics anddeliver health-related products. The built-in ClinicalDecision Support System delivers appropriate medicaladvice, prescriptions and, where it cannot, directs toinvoke tele-medicine. The VHC can interact with aremote CARE doctor who can recommend treatmentthrough an SMS prescription. The VHC also collectsmicroinsurance premiums and records them on thehand-held terminal.

    Book on MandayamsThe Leading Kannada Daily Udayavani, published a series of write ups under the caption

    “ É̈AU¼À ÆÀ j£À »jªÉÄAiÄÀ ̧ AÀ Ȩ́ÜU¼À ÄÀ ”, in their newspaper supplement, covering the achievements andcontributions by various Mandayams, during the past 50-60 years. The feature coveredpersonalities from various fields like Arts, Literature, Films, Scientific Research, Armed Forces,Administration, Sports etc. These half page sized articles appeared regularly for 33 weeks andcarried a realistic picture of the achievements and contribution of our community, which shouldmake all the Mandayams proud.Sri Suresh Moona, an eminent columnist, who writes on various subjects and has researched onhistorical aspects of Bangalore and its growth, has authored these articles based on the inputsprovided by the Sabha and his personal interviews with many members of our community.These articles have been very well received and appreciated.Our Sabha felt that the fund of information, collected with such a lot of effort, should be preservedin the form of a book, so that it will be a reference book about Mandayams, for future generations.We are happy to inform our readers that Sri Suresh Moona plans to bring out a collection ofthese articles in the form of a book, which will be published by “Samriddhi Sahitya”. This booktitled “Mandayam Naada Shilpigalu” will be released shortly and our Sabha has agreed toholding the book release function on Saturday 8th January 2011 evening, at the RamanujaSamskriti Bhavana. The publishers plan to supply the book to various libraries, apart frommaking it available at leading book stores. The book is priced Rs. 150/-, and will be sold on the

    release day at a special price of Rs.100/-.
