YKBlue Moon, Big Moon,

Blood Moon on WednesdayMoon watchers in Chennai are in for a rare treat on the

evening of Wednesday, Jan. 31.That will be the evening of Blue Moon, which means the

second full moon within a calendar month.‘Blue Moon’ is merely an idiomatic expression in English,

and it does not mean that the Moon turns blue on that day.‘Once in a blue moon’ means ‘rarely’ because it is not often

that there occur two full moons in a single calendar month.Ironically, there will be a Blue Moon in the forthcoming

March also, resulting in this supposedly rare eventhappening twice within 65 days.

Another reason why Jan. 31 is special is that, in its ellipticorbit around the earth, the moon will be nearest to us onthat day, and will therefore appear nearly 14% bigger thanduring a normal full moon. So, apart from being a BlueMoon, it will also be a Big Moon.

Again, it is even rarer for a full lunar eclipse to occur ona Blue Moon night. Unlike in the case of a full solar eclipsewhen the sun gets totally dark, the fully eclipsed moon willstill be visible from the earth but will assume a reddishcolour because a part of the sunlight still reaches it via theearth’s atmosphere. Thus, you can also see a Blood Moonon that evening.

In Chennai, the moon will still be below the horizon whena partial eclipse starts, and will just be rising when the totaleclipse starts at 6.21 pm. The full Red Moon will be visibletill 7.37 pm, when the total eclipse ends and the moon startsemerging from the earth’s shadow.

The moon will be fully visible from 9.38 pm.

Debris blocks margin of Sivasailam StreetSir, I am the con-

vener of SivasailamStreet andPadmanabha StreetExnora International.Last week I saw con-struction debris beingdumped by a van onthe road side. When Iconfronted the personsupervising the opera-

tion, he was rude and gave irrelevant replies. I told him that debrisshould only be dumped in locations earmarked by Chennai Corpora-tion.

Apart from the debris that is being dumped regularly, 6 months backMetrowater dug a trench in the concrete street, and left without closingthe trench properly. The debris has been dumped by the side of thetrench.

As the carriageway is blocked, the width of the road has got reducedleading to traffic problems at peak hours. The street is frequented bythousands of students as there are two schools close by.

As the pavements are blocked, the students are forced to walkalmost in the middle of the street risking their lives.

I appeal to Metrowater and Chennai Corporation to take immediatesteps to clear the debris and relay the damaged portions of the street.R. Chandrasekaran, Sivasailam Street, T. Nagar, Ph: 9941566930.

Water leaking for over a monthin Venkatanarayana Road

Sir, Metro water has been leak-ing from the underground pipe-line for more than a month inVenkatanarayana Road, T.Nagar, in front of Temple TreeApartments, near TTD temple.

This was also reported inMambalam Times three weeksback. The leak has still not beenattended to in spite of severalreminders to the officials con-cerned. It is a colossal waste ofwater. I once again appeal toMetrowater officials to takeimmediate action. Krishnan,5E. Temple Tree Apart-ments, 37, VenkatanarayanaRoad, T. Nagar

Never disclose bank/credit/debit carddetails over phone

Sir, This refers to the death of an elderlywoman following a heart attack two days afterlosing Rs.90,000 in an online fraud.

It has been reported that the woman wasconned over phone and inadvertently made todisclose her bank account details by an un-known caller who impersonated the officer ofthe bank, Only when the bank staff called herup to check whether the transaction was genu-ine did the woman realize the fraud.

While this online fraud got reported in themedia, probably due to the death of the victim, many such cases go unreported and many fallprey to such fraudulent calls. Such frauds con-tinue to happen despite the frequent alertsfrom the banks to its customers not to disclosebank account/debit/credit card/password/OTPand pin details.

Not long ago, a caller who introduced himselfas the manger of my bank said my debit cardhad been blocked and sought its details tounblock it. Realizing the danger, I immediatelydisconnected the call.

Such calls keep coming and it is for us toexercise extreme caution and remain onguard. V. S. Jayaraman, Motilal Street, T.Nagar

Say ‘no’ to bribeSir, In a writ filed by a petitioner who contended that despite the

specific Government Order passed in 2016 making it mandatory for allpublic offices to fix a board with the slogan ‘Bribe giving and receiving isan offence’ at a prominent location, the same is not being followed inseveral govt. offices. While disposing of the petition, the Madurai benchof the Maras High Court had directed the State government to imple-ment the order in toto. While the above bears testimony to the frivolousreaction to government orders by public servants, it is sad that thejudiciary has to direct the State Govt. to implement its own orders.

The mere display of such slogans will not end corruption.More than blaming the officials and complaining about the existence

of corruption in various government departments, the public shouldtake a pledge not to offer or fall prey to demands for bribes. Let ‘No tobribe’ be the slogan for this New Year. K. Harihar, T. Nagar

Hike in bus fares will affect common manSir, The Tamilandu Govt. states that it has not revised bus fares for

several years and it is the need of the hour in view of the precariousfinancial condition of the several transport corporations,

Any public utility cannot sustain itself and needs public fundingfor smooth running, but any increase in bus fares has to be effectedbearing the common man in mind.

Meanwhile, the salary of MLAs has been increased by 100%.Why this hurry and what is the necessity for the increase? Most of

the MLAs, who belong to the political parties, are definitely not in direstraits to warrant such a high increase, especially when the State’sfiscal deficit is very high. If the State can find resources to foot the hikedsalaries of the MLAs, it should then explore similar avenues to fund theailing transport corporations rather than put the burden on thepublic. V. S. Jayaraman, Motilal Street, T. Nagar
