This is the first of its kind in USA.It was a great gathering and a social meet. As I happened tobe visiting my daughter’s family in Silicon Valley, I attendedthis meet viz. Camp Buckhorn Mandayam Meet. Myself, myson-in-law Narayan Makaram and M.A. Sriram - President ofNorth American Mandayam Association drove together to CampBuckhorn reaching around 8 pm.Camp Buckhorn is owned by a Christian Missionery offeringfacilities of dormitary, lodging, conference hall, kitchen anddining, track to walk, indoor sports, etc. After registration andaccommodation formalities, all Mandayams gathered at Con-ference Hall. After prayer and a formal inauguration - explain-ing the rules and regulations at the Camp for strict adherence- the entire 2 day programme was announced. This was fol-lowed by a vegetarian dinner prepared by American cooks whowere briefed and trained about the Menu. Rice, dhal with len-tils, potato mix, mexican chappaties, wafers, curds, salads andsweet dish accompanied by fruits. The food was tasty andwholesome. Following this, we had a camp fire. After self in-troduction, everyone cut a joke and sang a bit of a song oneknew. It was a thrilling experience, with hot fire in cold tem-perature under a starry sky in isolation of a forest. We wereasked to be careful of wild life. No animal turned up, perhapsbecause of divine Mandayam Sri Vaishnavas’ gathering. Thegroups went on conversing, discussing, debating on variousaspects of Mandayams, and their identity, the social richnessetc. late into night. This was a thorough enjoyment. After breakfast of cereals, fruit juice, bread, fruits etc. the 2ndday’s morning programme began. Many went to indoor sta-

dium to play Volleyball and other games. Some went on track.A few sat and watched the silent environment. After this physi-cal outing, we returned and had lunch. The evening programme started at 4 pm. It was very muchlike Mandayams’ Annual programme in Bangalore. After invo-cation, a few members sang a few songs. There was aBollywood style dance, a skit, talks on Tiruppavai andMandayam roots. Debate and discussions followed about thefuture of NAMA and what it should do to grow into a muchwidely represented association, etc. President M.A. Sriramconducted the deliberations. Apart from many resolutions, itwas decided to hold the next meet in 2010, in San Jose, Cali-fornia.The evening concluded with special dinner consisting ofPuliyogare, Jilebi, Ladu, and Barphi contributed by members. It was excellent concluding menu.I would not hesitate to say that Mandayams of North Americahave a lot of pride for the commnity and the Mandayam iden-tity, without which the function would not have been such agreat success. On the 3rd day, after breakfast, a happy ending took placewith every Mandayam offering best wishes to the others andstarting the return trip back home.It was a great memorable trip for one with AmericanMandayams at a height of 8000’, in a place that is 15,000 kmaway from Bangalore.

MANDAYAM NEWS 13 December 2009

‘So, Mrs. Noroshinghom, you are back I see’, my husband’scolleague greeted me.

I sighed exasperatedly and replied ‘yes’!‘How was your trip, Mrs. Noroshingom?’ ‘fine’,I replied curtly and turned a way. This conversation took

place at Calcutta Airport. My husband’s name when correctly pronounced, is

‘Narasimhan’.Our family lived in Calcutta for ten years. In Bengal, ‘a’ is pronounced as ‘O’. ‘Nara’ is pronounced as

‘Noro’.‘Simha’ in North India is called as ‘Shinga’. In Bengal, it is

‘Shingo’. So my husband’s name became ‘Noroshingom’During a debate on the pronouciation of name, between my

husband and me, he had this to say:“Look Sheila, you better call me ‘Noroshingom.’ Be a Roman

in Rome. When I took charge of my job in Calcutta, after atransfer from Bombay, the staff there began to greet me as‘Noroshingom Dada, Nomoshkaar’. I became perplexed. I triedto convice them of the correct pronounciation. But this was invain. Very soon, my accent and pronouciation turned out to belike the local street Bengali’s. Eventually, I too began callingmyself ‘Noroshingom’! And this brought me a little closer to theBengali Bhadralog or gentlemen. This further led me to learnthe Bengali language and thus the Bengali society accepted meas one of them.

Now, let me relate to you funny incident that beat me hol-low to the bone.....

One day, I happened to find a carpenter who was doingexcellent work. So, I asked him to come to my residence, lookat my furniture and give me a cost estimate. He asked me myaddress. I told him that I lived in Mandeville Gardens, South Calcutta and gave him the address. He promised to come the sameevening. I waited & waited. Finally, after some time the carpen-ter appeared at my door. He apologized for the delay. When I

asked him what took him so long he said, “I asked some peoplefor your address. They guided me to a ‘nursing home’ calledKamala Nursing Home in Mandeville Gardens. Moshay(Mahashay’s equivalent to ‘sir’ in Bengali), since your name is‘Noroshingom’ I went there and waited. After some time I cameto know that there is no one by name Noroshingom at KamalaNursing Home. Please pardon me for this confusion”. Both thecarpenter and I had unstoppable laughter to our hearts con-tent. And that is how my name changed from Narasimhan toNoroshingom and then to Nursing Home!

“So Sheila, now don’t you think we should live as Bengalis inBengal. And here’s another funny one. In Bengal, 440 Volts iscalled 440 Bolts as ‘V’ is replaced by ‘B’.

Here are some other words and names wrongly and funnilypronounced that I have come across.”

Once, while travelling to work in Bombay, by car pool, myclose colleagues by name Damodar Rathi who happened to beMarwari, said to me “Narasimhan, let’s have some ‘snakes’. Iwas dumbfounded and quickly said, “Damodar, what are yousaying? How can we eat snakes? you are a pure vegetarian andso am I.”

He then said he meant vegetarian ‘snakes’ like Vada & Dosathat could be eaten at an Udupi restaurant in Byculla. Then Irealized that ‘snacks’ are pronounced as ‘snakes’ in Gujarati !

When I was in Sydney, Australia on work, the Australianswere calling me ‘Hans’ the last part of my name being ‘han’.They added to it the letter ‘s’ thereby making it a Christian name. And since I was in the habit of telling them a lot of Indianstories, they called me Hans Christian Andersen!

At office, in some of the memos that I received I was ad-dressed to as ‘N2 as my name was N. Narasimhan. And so, myname was deduced to an arithmetical multiple of ‘N’!

You are my wife and your always say’ Na! Oru nimishoVaarango’.

So, it comes to say, that I have been reduced to the syllable‘Na’!

Ancient Indian works on Science & TechnologyM.A.N. PrasadIt is quite natural for some eyebrows to be raised on

reading this caption, because there is a wide spread im-pression that ancient Indian works are largely spiritualand literary in nature and science and technology are thingsthat have come to us from the West. From the early days, man in his quest for harnessing and controlling nature, has studied it closely. What awed him to begin with, kindledhis spirit of inquisitiveness to know how it happened. As aresult he learnt about many phenomenons and processes, and was able to adopt them to make his life easier andcomfortable. In the process he evolved many technolo-gies.

We have many monographs and treatises in our an-cient literature, which cover scientific topics and technolo-gies in great details. These texts are in Sanskrit and otherancient languages, which our modern scientists are notproficient at. The pundits who are proficient in these lan-guages and can interpret these texts for us, are unfortu-nately not knowledgeable in science and technology, andhence cannot interpret them meaningfully to our scien-tists. Thus there is a wide gap of knowledge, which needsto be bridged. We need to re look at our ancient textswith an open mind and try to take the best of both world- that is, ancient and modern knowledge - so that man-kind is able to derive the maximum benefit from them,We also need to build a greater public awareness on thesubject, which currently is very low.

We have, as of date, come to know of the existence offew texts only, which cover vast areas and are very im-pressive . People involved in research work in this areafeel that this is just the tip of the iceberg, because a hugequantity of ancient manuscripts are awaiting coding, in-vestigation, understanding and interpretation. This is anarea of research that perhaps needs to be given priority.A brief look at some of these ancient texts will give us aglimpse of the indepth knowledge that ancient Indianspossessed in science and technology.

Maharshi Bharadwaja’s Vimanika Shastra dealswith avaiation. It is a comprehensive work which dealswith aero-designing & aeronautics, metallurgy of the al-loys used for construction of aircrafts, type of fuels andtheir merits, fire proof textiles for the attire of pilots, hisdietetics & nutrition, etc.

Yantra Sarvaswam of Maharshi Bharadwaja is adetailed work on all kinds of machines and motors.

Shakti Tantram of Rishi Agastya is a treatise onenergy and its usage for the benefit of mankind. Here theRrishi has covered 32 kinds of energies and how theycould be harnessed.

Loha Tantram written by Rishi Sakatayana is adetailed treatise on minerals & metals and alchemy.

Kala Satram of rishi Shanmukha explains the con-cepts of time and different ways of measuring time.

Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira is a comprehen-sive work on the world geography. It gives the seasons, climatic conditions and mineral wealth in different partsof the world.

Brahmanda Sastram by Maharshi Vyasa dealswith the worlds in space. The description of the Milky wayis very graphic, as though seen through a powerful micro-scope.

Akasha Tantram of Maharshi Bharadwaja is atreatise on Astronomy. His other work Amsu Bhodhini dealswith planets and kind of heat and light they radiate.

Aryabhateeam of Arybhata is another treatise onAstronomy. It gives the latitude & longitude and the localtime of various cities in Eastern and western hemipsherewith reference to the mean time at Srilanka. Explains thephenomenon of elipses, etc.

Meghotpathi prakaranam of Maharshi Angirasais a detailed treatise on clouds. It talks of various kinds ofclouds, thunder, lightning and hailstorms.

Aswa Chkitsa Sastram by Maharshi Solihotra is atreatise on horses and veterinary science. It describes indetails the anatomy of horses, their training, preventionand curing of their diseases including surgical methods.

While Visha Vadam deals with the chemistry of poi-sons, Garudam by Rishi Valla deals with the chemistryof antidotes for poisons and how to prepare them.

These are just a few examples to illustrate the kind ofareas that have been covered in our ancient literature.
