Principal’s Message Dear Manana Families, Happy New Year! According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2018 is the Year of the Dog. (The actual Chinese New Year begins on February 16.) Dog is the symbol of loyalty and honesty. President Donald Trump was born in the Year of the Dog (1946). We are now in the 3rd Quarter (Second Semester) of the 2017-2018 school year. Report cards for the 2nd Quarter will be sent home on January 23. Please review and discuss the report cards with your child(ren). Please note that teachers may also be contacting you to request a meeting. Just a Reminder…..Every Wednesday is Manana or College Tshirt Day

Principal’s Message (continued) You can walk in, call the office at 307-5300, or write a note to your child’s teacher to update the information. It is VERY important that we have current information on file at all times, especially in the event of a school emergency. We frequently experience cases where we attempt to contact parents/guardians via a mobile phone, only to hear “The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”, or “This mailbox is full and cannot accept any messages.”. Manana Elementary has “mass messaging” (voicemail/text) capabilities, but we use that service very sparingly. If the information in the State’s electronic database is incorrect, then you will probably not receive the call/text message when the mass messaging service is used. THANK YOU to all who are reporting student absences using the 307-5398 line. If you need a “refrigerator magnet” that lists Manana Elementary School’s telephone / fax / report an absence telephone numbers, please pick one up in our office. We are committed to providing a safe environment for our students, staff and visitors. We conduct safety drills throughout the school year to help students / faculty / staff prepare for possible emergencies. IN CASE OF A SCHOOL EMERGENCY

• DO NOT call or rush down to Manana Elementary. Phone lines need to be kept open and office staff will be needed for emergency response efforts.

• DO NOT call or send text messages to your child(ren). Faculty, staff and students are discouraged from using mobile phone communication for safety reasons.

• Tune in to local television / radio stations for official school news alerts. • Rely only on OFFICIAL communication from school or public safety officials. • Listen for OFFICIAL information regarding reunification with your child.

Students will be released ONLY to parents / guardians who are documented as emergency contacts and who present a picture ID such as a driver’s license / military ID / passport.

• Go to the DOE website (www.hawaiipublicschools.org) for OFFICIAL updates.

Principal’s Message (continued) SAFETY TERMS AND PROCEDURES In the event of an emergency at Manana Elementary, it is important that you know these terms:

1. LOCKDOWN A lockdown takes place if an internal or external threat is identified at our school. School doors will be locked and students will be confined to a room (classroom / office / library) depending when / where the threat is identified. No entry into or exit from the school will be allowed until an “all-clear” announcement is made.

2. SHELTER IN PLACE Students take refuge in designated areas to protect them from hazardous material or severe weather. No entry or exit from the school will be allowed until an “all-clear” announcement is made.

3. OFF-CAMPUS EVACUATION Certain emergencies may require students and staff to evacuate school because it is no longer safe to remain on campus. Manana Elementary has two (2) evacuation sites, depending on which site the police / fire officials direct us to go - - Manana Community Park (on Waimano Hm. Rd.) is our primary site, and Trinity United Methodist Church (Komo Mai Drive) is our secondary site. In the event the emergency continues and students are not able to return to campus, parent or guardian reunification procedures will take place at one of those sites, so that is why it is important to watch / listen for only OFFICIAL communication from school or public safety officials.

Our Manana Elementary School neighbors are always looking out for the safety of our students, and our school (especially during non-school hours). Please help us be good neighbors to them.

Principal’s Message (continued) As I tell our students, the (poor) choices and actions of a few can reflect poorly upon ALL of the students at Manana Elementary…. and that is not fair. So please help us with the following:

• A number of children are UNSUPERVISED at the Shigeo Ushiro Manana Neighborhood Park (playground equipment) after school on a regular basis. Children have been seen climbing the tree/breaking branches, and littering the playground equipment area.

• Litter (cigarette butts, food/candy wrappers/plastic bottles) has been left in front of homes (or on the street/grassy areas fronting the curbs) on Kumano Street.

• Drivers are disregarding the “NO LEFT TURN” sign posted at the entrance to the school on Kumano Street before/after school.

• Vehicles on Kumano Street have been reported as: blocking residents’ driveways, parking IN residents’ driveways, and parked facing in the wrong direction.

• Children (and adults) have been crossing Kumano Street from in between parked cars, creating very dangerous situations.

Let’s make a “New Year’s Resolution” to demonstrate the 3 WEs every day, and at every time of the day. Aloha,

Lost and Found  Lost a jacket…. Lost a hydroflask…. Lost a lunch bag…. Come check out lost/found in the office.  All unclaimed items will be donated at the end of the school year.

The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requires our school to notify the faculty, staff, and parents of the presence and status of asbestos containing materials (ACM) in our school buildings.  The law further requires a management plan based upon the findings of the initial inspection.   Manana Elementary School personnel conducted the required six months surveillance on 12/12/17 and will complete the next surveillance in June, 2018.     The results of the completed surveillance indicate that there have been no changes in the condition of the asbestos containing materials in our school buildings.   A copy of the inspection report and the Asbestos Management Plan is available for your review in our school office or at the Safety and Security Services Section of the Department of Education (DOE).  Please contact the office at 3075300 for more information, or to arrange an appointment to review the plan.  You may also contact the DOE Safety and Security Office at 5863457 for additional information.
