Managing for NGOs, CSR and Donors: Creang Sustainable Livelihoods Programme Directors Trilochan Sastry & G. Ramesh 29 August - 02 September, 2011 The focus of this program is to engage NGOs involved in creating sustainable livelihoods. In today’s market environment, those engaged with livelihoods need to be aware of a much wider gamut of issues to make their contribution more effective. Traditionally the NGO sector and even recent CSR initiatives have not focused much on market based interventions. This is true in agriculture, fisheries, animal husbandry, poultry, crafts, garments and a variety of similar livelihood sectors. Recent successes have shown how such initiatives can add significantly to the livelihoods of large numbers of people, especially the poor. The program aims to develop a more holistic understanding of the livelihood sector. Objectives The program aims to develop: 1. A holistic understanding of the livelihood sector. This includes the economic, social and business aspects. 2. An appreciation of the strategic and operational challenges, opportuni- ties and pitfalls in this sector 3. Issues faced in scaling and replicat- ing such efforts Contents The program will have five modules. The module on Finance related issues will cover basic accounting, and profit and loss account statements, managing working capital, preparation of project reports, project financing and appraisal. Module on Microfinance will cover finances and its impact on the poor. It will also discuss different models of microfinance. Producer Groups and Coopera- tives. This module will cover the entire gamut of activities from social mobilization, capacity building of producers, cooperative principles, organizational principles of producer groups. This will be followed by business aspects of such groups from aggregating, Target Participants’ Profile This program is for senior staff and founders of NGOs, senior or mid level executives from the Corporate sector working on CSR initiatives, and staff of donor agencies. PROGRAMME DIRECTORS Trilochan Sastry Quantitative Methods & Information Systems Professor Trilochan Sastry obtained a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He did his B.Tech from IIT Delhi and MBA from Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. Prior to joining Indian Institute of Management Bangalore he was a faculty member with Indian Institute of Management Ahmed- abad. He has been associated with various universities as a part of their faculty. These include, Visiting Professor at International University of Japan, Niagata, Japan; Visiting Professor, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Associate Dean (Research) and Professor, Indian School of Business. He has taught a wide variety of courses in the MBA programs, doctoral programs and executive education programs, including operations management, quantitative methods, data structure, algorithms and discrete mathematics. He has also taught senior executives in India, Srilanka and Kenya. The Association of Indian EXECUTIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMMES IIMB Management schools adjudged Professor Sastry the “Best Young Teacher “for the year 1999. He has published in international journals related to operations research and on broader topics related to supply chain management, telecommunications, software and automobile industry. He has to his credit a number of management cases on operations management, ethics, change management and electoral reforms. Professor Sastry has been a consultant to various Indian and International corporations. He has worked with ONGC in the chairman’s office at New Delhi. He is a Trustee of Cooperative Development foundation, Hyderabad, chairman of Association for Democratic Reforms that successfully filed and won the public interest litigation on criminalization of politics in the Supreme Court and Secretary of the Centre for Collective Development, focused on promoting small and marginal farmer cooperatives. He received the award for “Outstanding Contribution to National Development” from IIT Delhi in 2005. He specializes in the domains of hospital finance and health insurance; utilities, urban infrastructure and municipal finances; and public transport systems. Prior to the Fellow Programme he was member of Indian Economic Services. Post FPM, he was heading a management consulting company offering management and financial consulting. He comes with the experience of managing a NGO which was providing marketing support and capacity building support to tiny sector. He has undertaken consulting assignments for various union ministries and international agencies; and offers several training programmes for senior officers from various civil services.
