Community group to keep on fi gh ng to “Save Yaroomba”
FRIENDS of Yaroomba are determined to power ahead with a new ‘Save Yaroom-ba’ fundraising campaign in order to fi ght their appeal with other community organ-isations at the Supreme Court later in the year against the Sekisui House development at Yaroomba Beach.
A new spokesperson has been appointed, an inter-national standard video produced and a GoFundMe page established.
Friends Of Yaroom-ba (FOY) president, Daryl Maudsley, said his organisa-tion is pleased to announce that Kathryn Hyman is the new spokesperson for the Save Yaroomba campaign.
“Kathryn spearheaded the recent Twin Waters West win and we are excited to have her on board as we tackle a whole new world of online fundraising due to Covid 19 restrictions on our well-oiled event team.
“Kathryn will elevate our
campaign to a new level and she has an excellent track re-cord already in galvanising community support and we welcome her energy and ex-perience,” Mr Maudsley said.
New spokesperson Kath-ryn Hyman said that 9,000 written objections (during the DA consultation period) do matter and should be taken seriously by the three very experienced judges in the Su-preme Court.
“Development Watch does not waste its time on friv-olous cases and their legal advice is that they have a chance of winning and should go for it.”
Ms Hyman said there is a decades long chronology and history behind this develop-ment proposal.
“Drafting the new planning scheme involved signifi cant community consultation in 2014 to the tune of $15 mil-lion and to simply ignore it is a fl agrant misuse of ratepay-er funds causing angst and
a burden for the community and Council staff alike.”
Ms Hyman said legal teams don’t come cheaply and in order to appeal the approved development, donations will be essential.
”If Sekisui wins the Appeal it will be a landmark decision that will be used as a legal case reference to overturn the Town Plan up and down the Coast,” Ms Hyman stated.
The FOY team has ramped up its online presence with a GoFundMe platform to make donating easy. New merchan-dise is being prepared for sale and new events are in the pipeline. All contributions go directly to help cover legal costs.
The date of the Supreme Court Appeal hearing is yet to be announced. To view the new Friends of Yaroomba video or donate go to www.gofundme.com and search for Yaroomba.

INCREASE IN COVID19 CASES SPARKS WARNING FOR COAST RESIDENTS
NEW directions are in place for gatherings on the Sunshine Coast in line with measures introduced across Queensland following an increase in COVID-19 cases.
Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson called on residents to comply with the public health directions and limit gatherings in private homes or public spaces to a maximum of 30 people, con-tinue to maintain hand hygiene and physical distancing and get tested if you experience fl u-like symptoms.
Limitations on gatherings do not apply to businesses operat-
ing with a COVID Safe plan.Over the weekend,
Queensland’s Chief Health Offi cer announced a range of measures to manage the situa-tion resulting from additional positive COVID-19 cases in south east Queensland.
“Do not become complacent. Doing the right thing is very simple,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“Queensland Health is ask-ing for you to stay home if you are sick and be sure to get test-ed if you have any symptoms of COVID-19 including fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose or fatigue.
“Testing is essential, no mat-
ter how mild your symptoms are.
“The Chief Health Offi cer has made it very clear – there have been very low incidences of the cold and fl u this season, so if you have any symptoms, it is absolutely critical that you get tested.”
Mayor Jamieson said Sun-shine Coast residents needed to support each other’s efforts to comply with public health directions.
“We all have a role to play in slowing the spread and I urge everyone to act responsibly.”
If you have COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, call your doctor or 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84) and get tested. Call emergency services on Triple Zero (000) if you are very sick.
Visit Queensland Health’s website to fi nd your nearest testing centre, further infor-mation about restrictions on gatherings and for a list of lo-cations linked to the south east Queensland confi rmed cases.

Pic of the week
FIRST LIGHTFROM MT COOLUM
NICK COOPER
Taken on the morning of Thursday August 20, sunrise never looked so good from atop Mount Coolum – the perfect place to sit and soak up our gorgeous coastline.
If you happen to take a stunning pic, or a pic of something you think the community should know about – on either your smart phone or DSLR from anywhere in the region,
we would love to see it. Please send in your ‘pic of the week’ to, [email protected] and don’t forget to include your name, where the pic was taken and what it is of.
ISN’T it just wonderful that there is a day out there that seeks to respect and observe pretty much everyone in our community and this week-end our four legged friends are having a party thrown in their honour. The good peo-ple at Peticular in Peregian Beach will be having a day fi lled with doggy love this coming Saturday in celebra-tion of International Dog Day,
which is held on August 26. Book in your pooch for a photo and Peticular will do-nate $5 from every session to the RSPCA. Of course I am a little biased on this topic – anyone who knows me knows that my beloved four year old Rough Collie “Lilly” is my best friend and during this past crazy year, there is no mistaking just how important dogs can be for those who are
on their own, so if you can, please get down and support the RSPCA by booking in for a ‘pooch pic’ at Peticular.
The following weekend is where we celebrate our Fa-thers with ‘Father’s Day’ observed on Sunday Septem-ber 6. There has been so much horrible news this year and I would love to feature some of our special Fathers in our next edition, so if you have a spe-cial Dad or Grandad, please get in touch and let me know what makes them so special – I think we could all do with some collective “good news”. CELEBRATING OUR FURRY FRIENDS
A NEW online dashboard has been developed by the Queensland Government to improve local government planning transparency in a post-COVID world.
Treasurer and Minister for Infrastructure and Plan-ning Cameron Dick said the dashboard will provide the latest information about local government plan-mak-ing taking place under the Queensland Planning Act.
“We want to put more planning information in the hands of Queenslanders, and to do that in the age of social distancing we have to take ad-vantage of digital platforms,” Mr Dick said.
“This plan-making dash-
board will give communities a greater understanding of what planning changes are being considered or progressed at a local level.
“It will also keep industry and small business informed about the developments bringing new infrastructure and new jobs, both so cru-cial to our COVID economic fi ghtback.
“Our government is deliver-ing a strong plan to Unite and Recover for Queensland Jobs, and these small but important changes to the way we engage with planning will propel us further down our path towards recovery.”
Mr Dick said remaining agile when it came to planning
guidance and governance has allowed Queensland to better respond to the challenges of the pandemic.
“We’ve already introduced a variety of planning amend-ments to help Queenslanders during the COVID crisis, making it easier for businesses to operate, adapt and employ, and for consultation on devel-opments to continue,” he said.
“We’ve also collected pub-lic feedback on a range of red tape reduction measures that will streamline planning pro-cesses and approvals.”
The plan-making dash-board is available via the Queensland’s Planning Frame-work website.

SUNSHINE Coast locals Ray and Yvonne Aspey are among the lucky local purchas-ers who have secured one of the limited golf frontage lots with-in the Vantage Coolum estate.
Ray said it was a great op-portunity to build their dream family home on a large 611m2 lot.
“We found it really diffi cult to fi nd an affordable home site which was spacious and had a wide frontage which was also
fl at and ready to build.“We never dreamed that we
could have uninterrupted views of a lush green golf course and yet be close to everything the Sunshine Coast has to offer. Our home will be designed to take full advantage of the as-pect and it’s reassuring to know that our view will never be built out,” Ray said.
Sekisui House Project Direc-tor Evan Aldridge said just four lots remain and range in size
from 751sqm to 972sqm and priced from $489,000.
“Buyers have been quick to act because vacant lots which are ready to build on around Coolum and Yaroomba are very diffi cult to fi nd. Especial-ly those that are large and level with a beautiful golf course as-pect as the remaining lots we currently have available, so it’s a great opportunity for buyers to design and build their dream home in an exclusive and se-
cure estate. “With only four lots remain-
ing, interest will continue to be strong and I am sure the $15,000 landscaping package will be a great incentive for many buyers looking to add that unique touch to the exteri-or of their home,” Evan said.
Place Projects Director, Bruce Goddard said interest in the Sunshine Coast was at an all-time high due to a number of major infrastructure projects either already completed or currently underway as well as the region’s enviable lifestyle and affordability compared to major capital cities.
“To date local Sunshine Coast buyers have recognised the unique estate and pur-chased, however we are certainly seeing signifi cant en-quiry from Brisbane as well as ex pat Queenslanders who have relocated to Melbourne, Syd-ney or even overseas as they reassess their lives amongst the turmoil caused by Covid-19.
“Many are starting to real-ise they don’t need to live in a big city away from family and friends because they can work from home and commute when required. There’s also signifi -cantly more high playing jobs available as a result of the new hospital, the airport runway ex-pansion and the new businesses who will be located in the Ma-roochydore CBD,” Mr Goddard said.
Interested parties can visit the onsite sales offi ce every Saturday from 10am until 2pm or by appointment any other time. Visit www.vantage-coolum.com.au or call Scott Heaney on 0408 711 027 for more information.

Sunshine Coast Airport awarded carbon neutral for fourth year
SUNSHINE Coast Airport has been awarded carbon neu-tral status for the fourth year under the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation Program.
The highest level of accred-itation achievable under the scheme, Sunshine Coast Air-port was the fi rst airport in Australia to be recognised as carbon neutral in 2017, and remains the only airport in Australia to have achieved the Level 3+ certifi cation.
Due to the impacts of COVID-19, Sunshine Coast Airport will hold the accredita-tion for two years.
Sunshine Coast Airport Chief Executive Offi cer Andrew Brodie said it was wel-comed good news, and a proud moment for the region.
“This award is a signifi cant achievement for the Sunshine Coast, placing us with only fi ve other airports in Asia-Pacifi c to currently hold the title,” Mr Brodie said.
“Our region is already renowned for its natural envi-ronment, with Noosa last year awarded UNESCO biosphere status for another 10 years.
“This award underlines our
place at the forefront of in-dustry standards, and we will continue to prioritise our com-mitment to waste management, recycling and energy reduction into the future.”
Sunshine Coast Airport’s achievements include:
*A reduction in C02 pro-duced per passenger by 43 per cent since 2012.
*A 12 per cent reduction in tonnes of C02 produced per passenger in the last reporting year.
*A 10 per cent reduc-tion in fuel usage for airport operations.
*Waste reduction of 12 per cent in the last reporting year.
ACI’s Airport Carbon Ac-creditation Program was launched in Europe in 2009 as part of the aviation industry’s response to climate change, and now has more than 313 airports participating across the globe. Other levels of recognition in-clude carbon Mapping (Level 1), Reduction (Level 2) and Op-timisation (Level 3).
For more information on the program, please visit -

EMISSIONS?Dear editor,Is there an admission from

Margaret Wilkie,Peregian Beach.
ANDREW DAVIS STORYDear editor, Your article (CNSA Au-
gust 20-26) exposes Andrew Davis’ dislike for the people of the Sunshine Coast and for democracy.
Firstly, the ease with which Lyn Saxton debunks Davis’ claims about Devel-opment Watch speaks for itself. Davis’ misrepresenta-tions would be laughable if they were not so transparent in their desire to be hurtful and divisive.
Secondly, Davis reveals his true nature when he says he doesn’t think people should be able to use the legal sys-tem if they can’t pay. That a lawyer would make such a statement is chilling. Per-haps Davis thinks the diggers gave their lives so that vested interest could deny the rule of law and limit the right of Australians to access justice.
Most disturbingly, Davis perpetuates the lie that the council was forced to de-fend Sekisui with “millions and millions” of ratepay-er’s money. Council was not forced to do anything. It CHOSE to do so.
When council refused to undertake any pre-DA com-munity consultation Mayor Jamieson justifi ed his refusal by citing the formal submis-sions process as fulfi lling that vital role. It was COUNCIL’S CHOICE to reject the un-ambiguous outcome of that submissions process and use ratepayer’s money to fi ght ratepayers.
Finally, we see Davis whining about ‘lost jobs’. Yet, the fact is Sekisui bought a job-providing, shovel-ready project eight years ago. Had they built within community expectations they could have provided jobs immediately.
All that said, let’s remem-ber that Andrew Davis was the dealmaker who got Brett Winkler to preference Jamie-son above Debbie Blumell in
the 2012 election. Brett Winkler was the
pro-higher high rise, pro higher growth, and pro casino mayoral candidate endorsed by Noosa de-amalgamation-ists such as Noel Playford, Tony Wellington and Noosa Parks Assn.
Despite Winkler’s poli-cies being completely at odds with the Noosa ethos, Win-kler received 30 per cent of the vote in Noosa. His pref-erences went to Jamieson thereby ensuring Noosa’s de-amalgamation and Jamie-son’s victory.
It doesn’t take a political science degree to join the dots. Sekisui is but one in-stallment in the trade-off for ‘saving’ Noosa. The sad truth is Noosa, with a little help from its friends, sold out their neighbours.
Davis may not have a di-rect fi nancial stake in Sekisui but any successful appeal might end the ‘deal’ he and others have been working on for a decade: to move town planning out of the reach of democracy and the com-munity and make planning the prisoner of back room politics.
Ken Fisher, Yaroomba Beach.
SAVE YAROOMBADear editor, Considering that 9,000
people were against the coun-cil going against their own town plan, I am amazed and fi nd it hard to believe that you have only received letters in support of Sekisui build-ing on one of the only dark beaches left on this section of the coast. Perhaps you could let your readers know the true numbers?
S. PetersonMount Coolum.
US ELECTIONDear editor, Narcissists are legends in
their own mind, always right, unable to act maturely to resolve confl icts. In our soci-ety, often these personalities run huge corporations, striv-ing for positions of power in business and governments.
Trump is the stereotypi-cal narcissist, denigrating the Democratic nomination of Kamala Harris as Vice Pres-ident in Biden’s team. The derogatory language he used to intimidate this talented lady of immigrant parents
as; “the meanest, horrible and disrespectful”, reveals Trump’s personality, charac-ter and immorality. Trump is threatened by any chal-lenge to his authority, as a true narcissist. He knows the November election will rely on postal votes through the COVID pandemic.
He has a historical lack of respect for women, hates crit-icism and wants to win. Like Hitler’s rhetoric in Germany pre-WW2, slowly under-mining the status of Jews and their perceived role in Germany’s defeat in WW1, Trump is preparing voters for a fake election outcome. By installing his own choice for Postmaster General, he claims postal votes won’t give a valid election outcome. Due to the reduction in funds he has withdrawn from the postal service per se, if the Democrats win, he will cry “wolf”! He will manipulate all systems, which are unfa-vourable for his re-election.
Narcissistic Trump uses bullying to dominate, at the expense of all America. His toxic mouth belies his inherit-ed social status. His irrational and unfounded comments about opponents as morally corrupt and untrustworthy, is the pot calling the kettle black. He is desperate in a time when the ratings show his imminent demise.
E. Rowe,Marcoola.
All letters to the editor must contain a residential address and be clearly writ-ten. Only a suburb will be published and those that are grammatically correct.
Le ers to the editorMANY changes and ad-
vances again in this last month on multiple fronts. The hard closure of our border to VIC, NSW & ACT, whilst heart-breaking for all impacted including residents returning home, has been taken with the aim to reduce the risk to QLD residents and businesses. As the latest cases in Brisbane are traced, our gathering re-strictions have been reduced to 30 at home or in public places as part of these efforts. Businesses operating under COVID Safe plan can operate as normal.
Funding announcements are always exciting, for individu-als, community organisations as well for local council to support jobs and to complete much needed projects for our community. This includes ad-aptation grants totalling over $3m for 353 businesses, and it was wonderful to visit some of these, including some of our ‘furrier and feathered’ friends! For grant information head to www.sandybolton.com to see what you may be eligible to apply for.
It is good to see support for affordable housing op-tions with the development of a Project Action Group, complete with an ‘army’ of dedicated ‘Noosans’ on the march, whom I was privileged to address at the ‘Mingle with the Mayor’ event last week. This must be a tripartisan ef-fort, and it is wonderful to have Mayor Clare join our on-going efforts. As I said in my address, there can be no more excuses as to why we are not looking after our own.
With restrictions for MP’s
thankfully easing, I have been able to return to address-ing community groups under COVID safe conditions, in addition to my ‘roadies’ and utilizing Zoom and other plat-forms for Q & A sessions and updates. With so much to share, if your group would like a visit, or a Zoom session with evenings and weekend spots available, just give our offi ce a call. Otherwise I look for-ward to seeing you street side at Peregian on Saturday Sep-tember 5.
Parliament has been ex-tremely busy to say the least, and with the upcoming elec-tion on October 31, keep in mind the various voting op-
tions. Early voting (pre-poll) is from October 19 – 30 with additional postal vote capaci-ty and streamlined processes available to avoid diffi culties experienced in March. Keep an eye on your letterboxes as we have sent the Annual ‘Con-nect’ along with postal voting information so you can get in early to avoid any ‘rush’.
After advocating with the Premier for a wage freeze for MPs, I welcomed the recent announcement that our pay would be frozen for the next four years. As elected repre-sentatives we need walk the walk and not just be all about the talk!
It has been a big month, and with not enough space to re-late all, either head to www.sandybolton.com, or check the regular Facebook updates on ‘Sandy Bolton MP’.

IT’S TIME to open a conversation in our community that needs to be had right around the country. The conversation I’m talking about relates to social media and its use by children. If the public in general were truly aware of the things that occur on social media between children they would be horrifi ed. The words, the thoughts, the taunts, the images – it is a cesspool of everything bad that we, as humans, can do to each other. It is a child in a room, alone, devastated at the words being fi red at them from faceless cowards. Shouldn’t we do everything in our power to prevent even a single child from being harmed?
The thing about social media and children is that
it has all come upon us so quickly, driven aggressively by an industry making billions of dollars. What should be seen as an incredible work of technology appears to have become a birthright, with adults baulking at the thought of saying “no.” In previous generations people thought nothing of children developing an addiction to cigarettes. It took a long time for humanity to wake up to the thought that our smoking will kill us. I believe that we are at the same point with children and social media, where there isn’t the collective awareness of the damage that social media is doing to the minds, the emotions and the self-esteem of our young people.
Why would we allow
anything that could harm children? Worse still, why would we allow anything that harms children where it matters most – in their hearts and minds as they struggle to form their own identity during their most vulnerable years. And, yet, every day this damage is being done to millions of children all around the world through cruel messages and hurtful words that bypass parents and directly attack the self-worth of the child. Why??
I believe it’s time to fi ght back. The tech giants have had things their way for far too long now, reaping millions of dollars while showing no social responsibility over the harm these platforms cause. It’s time we had a community-wide discussion around social media and our youth, and start the long process of fi nding the right ways to protect our children from harm!

ON SUNDAY morning while walking through the Marcoola to Yaroomba foreshore bushland conservation reserve, I spotted sitting quietly on a branch, an eastern yellow robin. We are so fortunate to have beautiful birds, wallabies and kangaroos on our doorstep and often I fi nd that many just take this for granted.
In economic terms a scarci-ty of supply and an increase in demand results in higher prices and the value of conservation reserves will continue to grow. Unfortunately, with the power of multi nationals and their powerful friends in all levels of government, there is a threat to these assets on the North Shore.
The Marcoola to Yaroom-
ba reserve adjoins the proposed Sekisui Yaroomba development. No wonder the community has fought hard to maintain the wild-life conservation values with the amazing fauna present within the reserve. The rich biodiver-sity was brought home to me some years back when I assisted Coolum and North Shore Coast Care in arranging fauna surveys in this area.
I have always advocated strong appeal, grievance and re-view mechanisms as part of a democratic system that could otherwise be easily impact-ed by power imbalances and self- interest. As an Advocate for the Crown in the State of Queensland, I made submissions
to industrial courts for the inclu-sion of grievance procedures in awards and agreements to ensure fairer workplaces.
I am very happy with the role being performed by advocacy groups like Development Watch who have a longer term vision for our community and the natural environment. I believe Develop-ment Watch thinking is more in line with a quadruple bottom line where economic, social, cultur-al and environmental factors are thankfully considered.
I will be supporting the ap-propriate use of the legal system and the following of due process for there to be an appeal on the proposed Sekisui Yaroomba de-velopment. There needs to be donations from the community for funding the appeal.
I am not taking for granted that we need to grow jobs and return to prosperity following the COVID-19 challenges, how-ever we have to look long term and recognise the value of all our assets.
ObservationsTONY GIBSONA MARCOOLA RESIDENT WHO IS ACTIVE IN COMMUNITY, BUSINESS, POLITICS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Taken for granted
A FAMILY fun day on Satur-day September 5 will mark one year on from the Peregian fi res which devastated bushland, evacuated thousands, threatened businesses and destroyed one home.
Organised by Peregian Family and Friends resident’s association, the event will commemorate the day both professional and volunteer fi re-fi ghters came together to save the local community.
Event spokesperson Leigh McCready said the tireless work of the local fi refi ghters would
long be remembered.“The fi res really shook our
Peregian community and we still talk about it to our chil-dren, so they are all aware of the role that these men and women played to protect us all. While it was frightening, it also gal-vanised our local community as it made us all more aware of the important work of our local rural fi re service. Many locals have since become volunteers,” Ms McCready said.
The Family Fun Day will be held in Peregian Park behind the Peregian Surf Club from
midday to 3pm and includes a number of activities for the chil-dren including a jumping castle, face-painting, pop-corn and snow cones along with busking and two fi re trucks.
There will also be sign-on in-formation for both volunteer fi re fi ghting and local lifesaving as Peregian looks to increase their nipper and adult participation rates into the future.
For more information, please go to Peregian Fami-ly & Friends Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/peregianfamilyandfriends)

North Shore Boardriders take out ‘Nudie’ ba le
OVER the past week-end reigning national champions North Shore Boardriders have taken out the 2020 nudie Australian Boardriders Battle QLD qualifi er, which was held at Duranbah Beach on the Gold Coast in punchy 2ft waves.
North Shore defeated Snap-per Rocks, Noosa and Burleigh Boardriders respectively in a nail-biting fi nal. All four teams will now head to the national fi nal to be held in 2021.
Burleigh’s Liam O’Brien started off the heat with a 5.4 (out of a possible 10.00) to take an early lead, but after all teams progressed through the heat with their various surfers it was North Shore who’s accumulative total heat score was able to secure victory.
North Shore’s power surf-er (the most vital role in the team), Alister Reginato, was stoked to take out the QLD qualifi er and move one step closer to winning a second na-tional fi nal.
“It’s pretty epic,” Regina-to said.
“It was our goal to win the national fi nal, which we were able to achieve last season. We’ve never won the QLD qualifi er event - which is just as important to us because we’re surfi ng against all our local clubs and we know ev-eryone here really well so it’s super competitive.”
“We have a great team, we all push each other at our club events and training, and I guess it shows when we’re in the water together.”
Burleigh Boardriders’ Liam Obrien has won the Oakley Prizm Award for best perform-er of the day.
