Long-term vision for environmental management "Sekisui Eco-Frontier 2030"

Sekisui Chemical Group will continue to develop the frontiers of "Creation of Housing / Social Infrastructure" and "Chemical Solutions", utilizing its prominent technology and quality, thereby contributing to people's lives around the world and the global environment.

In 2003, Sekisui Chemical Group established a certification system for Environment-Friendly Products, and since then, we have made progress in expanding our products and businesses that give consideration to the environment. The system for Environment- Contributing Products, which began in 2006, has advanced these standards further. Our goal is to contribute to our customers and the society by not only considering the environmental impact during manufacturing but also reduce the impact from the products and businesses themselves.

Sekisui Chemical Group believes that the environmental impact to society can be reduced by further spreading the Environmental-Contributing Products into the market. The specific numerical figure of this impact is the "External Economic Benefit". This is evaluated by converting the reduction of environmental impacts into monetary amounts when Sekisui Chemical GroupÕs Environment-Contributing Products are used by customers or society.

Sekisui Chemical Group consists of business divisions including the Housing Company, the Urban Infrastructure & Environmental Products Company, and the High Performance Plastics Company. Each of these units of business contribute to the environment through Environment- Contributing Products across a wide range of fields, including housing, social infrastructure, vehicles, and electronic materials.

As of the end of December 2010, the number of Sekisui Heim houses with solar energy generation systems installed totaled 95,000 units. With the capacity to generate 392 MW of electricity, the surface area of solar energy generation panels installed totaled 2.9 million square meters - equivalent to approximately 400 soccer fields.

Through efforts by the national government and the private sector, Japan's total CO2 emission continues to decrease. However, in 2008, emissions from residential homes have increased by approximately 34% (to 171,026kt) from 1990, Kyoto Protocol's base year (127,443kt)*1. Energy conservation in private homes will be an important issue in the future. In 1998, Sekisui Chemical began installing photovoltaic generation systems in Sekisui Heim houses. It is one of the first house builders in the residential construction industry to address environmental issues.

As the top builder of solar houses*3, Sekisui Chemical next developed the concept of a new

generation of solar houses combining comfort, with of course, value. Comfortable Ohisama Heim

houses keep interior temperature and humidity at optimal levels year round. With a combination of

advanced equipment and support systems in addition to outstanding high performance thermal

insulation and airtightness, these have contributed to greatly reducing CO2 emissions, as well as, of

course, improving comfort.

S-LECTM Film has 40% of world’s share of interlayer film applied to laminated glass for automotive

windshields. S-LECTM Sound and Solar Film is a revolutionary product that realizes sound and

thermal insulation simultaneously in a single sheet. This film minimizes low-frequency vibration

energy such as engine noise and unpleasant high frequency hissing noise, and in addition, mid-

infrared rays (wavelengths of 1,500-2,000nm) are effectively reduced. This film is used in many

vehicle models around the world, including the Honda INSIGHT.

Vehicle weight and frequency of car air conditioner usage are important factors that determine the motor vehicle's fuel consumption.Improvements in sound and thermal insulation of windshields are required.

Improving vehicle fuel efficiency is an important issue in terms of not just from the point

of energy consumption, but also the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. It is not just

the engine performance, but also vehicle weight that has a significant impact on

improving fuel economy. For this reason, every year there is a need to further reduce

the weight of auto parts. Air conditioners put a large burden on the engine, and causes

fuel consumption to worsen. Windshield glass, which has a large surface area within

the vehicle and easily can impact interior temperature, requires a balance between light

weight and good thermal insulation.

Today, the length of sewage pipes in Japan requiring replacement or renewal has reached 10,000 kilometers.* Sewage pipes equivalent in length to about 300 times the circumference of the JR Yamanote Line could end up as waste.

Changing environmentalperformances of infrastructure

Today, deterioration of sewage pipes is becoming a major social issue. In Japan alone, the

total length of sewage pipes at least 50 years old has reached 10,000 km*, a distance

equivalent to about 300 times the circumference of the JR Yamanote Line. While these

sewage pipes need to be rebuilt or renovated, renewing 100 meters of sewage pipes with

conventional construction methods generates 1,000 tons in waste, resulting in a significant

impact on the environment. Furthermore, large-scale sewer construction causes traffic

The issue of sewage pipe deterioration is not a situation that is unique to Japan. Cities around

the world are full of sewage pipes that need to be renewed. The SPR Method, having excellent

properties in strength, durability, costs, and low environmental impact, has been installed in many

areas of the world, including USA, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Pipes rehabilitated using this method have strengths equal to or higher than that of new pipes. SPR meets many of the requirements of sewage pipes, such as earthquake resistance, corrosion resistance, and water tightness.

When using interlayer film with sound insulation, thinner and lighter windshield can be used. Thermal insulated film can reduce air conditioning usage by preventing temperatures inside the vehicle to rise. This reduction has been shown to increase fuel efficiency by about 3%, and installation of S-LECTM Sound and Solar Film in 10 million vehicles makes it possible to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 600,000 tons / year.*

Conventional sewage pipes renewal involves digging up roads, create traffic congestion, and generate industrial wastes. However, neglecting deteriorated sewage pipes could lead to their failure, which involves the risk of road collapse. The SPR Method is a renewal method that lines the interior of these pipes with a spiral wound rigid PVC material. Since this makes it possible to use the original pipes, it conserves resources and generates almost no waste.

Building houses that take Hokkaido's winters into consideration also contribute to the earth's environment. The energy usage for heating during the long and cold winters is kept low, and in addition, the emission of CO2 that causes global warming is greatly reduced. The key to realizing ultra-high thermal insulation performance is the double-wall unit construction method. By using double insulation layers -internal and external insulation- in the steel-frame units, a Q value (next-generation energy-conservation standard in the Hokkaido region) of 0.99W/m2K was realized, which significantly surpasses the standard value of 1.6W/m2K.

These systems are designed for existing Heim and Two-U homes without pre-installed solar energy systems. Proprietary software is used to analyze individual customers' utility costs. Current energy usage is made clear and advice on energy conservation is made. Furthermore, cost savings resulted from the solar energy systems are calculated and the installation optimum plan is proposed.

The two-by-six construction method contributes to high thermal insulation and air tightness, which provides comfortable living space. Production in a factory environment, which is unaffected by weather, has increased such performances. The comfort levels of these houses are scientifically analyzed and provide the utmost comfort possible, including air quality. They also have realized a Q value of 1.6 W/m2K which satisfies the next-generation energy-conservation standard*, and minimized the generation of CO2 from air conditioners.

This is an insulated bathtub in compliance with JIS standards. Water heating energy is saved by applying various insulation materials to keep the cold air away from around the bathtub. Even after four hours, the water temperature only drops 2.5℃ or less. Therefore, energy for reheating can be minimized, regardless if family members bathe at different times.

In summers and winters, comfortable temperatures escape through windows. Air Sandwich thermal insulation attachments, which can be installed on windows, answers the call for easier access to comfort. Its multiple air layers formed by transparent films demonstrate high thermal insulation performance and reduced condensation while keeping the interior bright.

Single pane glasses in Heim and Two-U windows can easily be replaced with better heat insulating double pane glasses. These have been coated with metallic film for increased heat insulation. Tight-fitting rubber seals around the sash are installed for added air tightness, which increases heating efficiency in the wintertime.

In addition to energy-conserving features such as high thermal insulation, high airtight building performance, and high-efficiency heat-pump water heaters, Sekisui Heim also supplies houses combining energy-creating fixtures, such as solar energy generation systems. These are known as Ohisama Heim houses. Furthermore, they also provide utility cost navigation systems, making it possible to ascertain each household's CO2 emissions everyday. Utility-cost consulting, that advises on optimal ways of living based on this data, is available.

Sekisui Protectcoat Thermal Barrier and Heat Radiation Coating

With the industry's highest thermal insulation performance (thermal conductivity = 0.019 W/m・k*), this material can provide the same insulation performance with less than half the thickness of glass wool. Its high level of thermal insulation performance realized through the use of phenol resin and non-CFC gas has good durability and fire retardancy (limiting oxygen index = 33.4%). Phenovaboards can be used in many single family homes and general buildings as an insulation material that can meet a wide range of needs, such as those of insulation affixed to building exteriors and filling conventional wood-frames. *The smaller the value, the better the performance.

LED Materials

Advantra Hot-Melt Adhesives for Packaging

This is a hot-melt adhesive made of olefin resin for sealing packaging such as cardboard and carton cases. It melts at high temperature and then sets as it cools. Since it requires less material than EVA based adhesives, the energy required for application can be reduced by 30%.

The temperature of the surface with this coating applied is lowered by special heat-radiating materials which have high heat-exchange characteristics and radiates most of the heat from the sun back into the atmosphere. This prevents the temperature inside the building to rise, and therefore reducing the usage of air conditioners, thus reducing CO2 emission. In a comparison test using storehouses, the energy consumption of air conditioners during summer time was 15% less when the coating was applied, and no difference in heating energy in the winter time. Other examples of application include

refrigerated warehouses and roofs of houses and apartments. It also is used in places such as around outdoor swimming pools to keep walking surface temperatures low.

S-LECTM interlayer films for laminated glass are products that adds a variety of functions. Sound insulation performance helps reduce vehicle weight by enabling to use thinner glass and replace sound insulation parts, while thermal insulation performance decreases air conditioning usage in the summertime. Both lead to improvements in fuel efficiency and contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. Installation of these interlayer films in 10 million vehicles could cut CO2 emissions of 60,000 tons with sound insulation interlayer film, 530,000 tons with solar control interlayer film, and 600,000 tons with sound insulation/solar control interlayer films per year. These materials are already used in numerous vehicles, including hybrid vehicles.

LED technology is becoming the standard in energy-saving lighting. Sekisui Chemical Group develops and produces parts and materials to support this technology.

Protects the LED chips and helps to stabilize the emitted light.

This material protects the electrodes and reflects the light to the surface, increasing the efficiency of light emission.

This material dissipates heat from the LED chip to increase lighting efficiency. The brightness is increased by 20% when thermal conductive bonding sheets are used compared to modules without this sheet.

These are insulation materials for use with pipes and ducts, targeted at markets in the middle East and southeast Asia. Lighter and lower thermal conductivity than foamed rubber, its thermal insulating performance does not decrease with changes in thickness during installation or with condensation, unlike glass wool. Since it has aluminum foil on outside and adhesive on the inside, no covering or other materials to keep the insulation material in place are required.

Recycled Foam Core Pipes

These pipes are made of post-consumed PVC pipes generated from construction sites. Triple-layer pipes are formed by sandwiching these recycled materials with virgin materials. Since the interlayer is foamed, the weigh is about 40% less than solid PVC pipes. This makes transporting, joining, and cutting faster and easier, as well as energy saving.

A system is developed where material is recycled from container to container, in which post-consumed containers are recycled as new containers in any color. By utilizing recycled material in the core layer of this "sandwich molded*" product, the percentage of reused material could be as high as 40%.

These plastics studs are made from recycled scrap generated during manufacturing of packaging material. They have excellent resistance against water, termites, and corrosion.Compared to lumber, absorption of moisture is low, and they are free of knots and splinters. This product is suited for applications such as roofing and base frames for exterior walls.

ASHERA Wood uses recycled materials such as fly ash generated from fossil-fuel power plants and recycled plastics from shopping bags and other plastics from ordinary households. The surface is coated with highly weatherproof wood-filled resin to reproduce the feel of wood. It is used in applications such as wooden decks.

Today, there is a pressing need to convert to a society based on the concept of three R's : reducing, reusing, and recycling. These Reusable System Houses have been developed from the idea that housing needs to follow this trend.

The Reusable System Houses is a program that when a Sekisui Heim owner moves out of the house, the house itself is disassembled, refurbished, and then rebuilt for a new resident in a new location. The Reusable System Houses program takes advantage of the modular design that enables materials, such as the structural frame and foundation, to be reused, even though the interior finishing and fixtures need to be replaced. As a result, the majority of the house can be reused, contributing to reducing wastes.

GREEN LABEL is a line of products made from 100% recycled materials, using plastic recyclable waste from households and disposed plastic from businesses. The triple layer product is manufactured with a unique "sandwich molding technology". Plastic waste from households and businesses is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 500 tons (fiscal 2012). Development of a variety of products, including GL containers, is planned.

Disk-winded flat ropes contain at least 50% recycled polyethylene. Polar-winded braided ropes contain at least 50% recycled polypropylene. Both are Eco Mark certified.

Transparent Eco-Duster

Medical Waste Containers

This is a completely transparent dust bin that makes it easy to separate wastes. Made from 52% recycled plastic PET bottles, this product has earned the Eco Mark certification and been certified under the Recycling Promotion Logo system. Although it uses recycled materials, it is transparent that makes it possible to see the interior clearly. This also makes it possible to check for suspicious materials. The characteristics of PET, which are lightweight and strong, and also outstanding durability are utilized. The Dusters are available in a wide range of sizes, from 35 to 90 liters.

In addition to disposed industrial materials, recycled materials included in "The Containers and Packaging Recycling Law" are used as well. Therefore, 100% recycle content is achieved.

Hanayaka and Sukoyaka Agricultural Films

The straws are made of highly durable polypropylene and other natural inorganic materials. The natural feel of tatami mats is made possible with the development of materials that have similar structure as natural "rush grass". In addition, they are more durable compared to natural grass and therefore their beauty last longer as well.

While agricultural greenhouse films are generally said to last only one year, Hanayaka and Sukoyaka agricultural films can reduce film waste significantly through realizing longer usage. Durability, thermal insulation, water permeability, and dust prevention is increased through use of proprietary technologies of metallocene resins.

Ultra-Weatherproof Grade of Modified Silicone Sealant

FFU Synthetic Wood

Modified silicone sealants are commonly used to waterproof joints between exterior finishing materials on houses and other buildings. Such sealants need to be weather resistant and have waterproofing functions to alleviate deformation in exterior materials. Ultra-weatherproof grade has roughly double the durability of conventional products, for example by showing very little change after 4,000 hours of UV resistance testing. It also is resistant against discoloration, staining, cracking, and deformation, contributing to minimizing waste generated by increasing the intervals between building maintenance.

This lightweight, corrosion-resistant synthetic lumber is made of foamed urethane, reinforced with fiberglass. It is roughly the weight of wood and just as easy to work with, and it has sufficient strength to use as a structural material. Because it is a plastic material, it also has outstanding durability and water resistance. Primarily used in railroad ties, this product contributes to reducing usage of natural lumber.

These inspection chamber and manhole covers are made from recycled PET bottles that are collected from households. It is certified under the Eco Mark and also the Recycling Promotion Logo. They can be used in residential parking spaces. In addition, these covers are easy to recycle, and therefore contribution to material conservation is made possible.

Rain Station and Cross Wave Rainwater Storage System

Vacuum Sewer System

Rain Stations are modules comprised of plastic parts and can be installed in various locations regardless of size, for example beneath roads, parks, as well as residential houses. Its unique soil settling technology makes maintenance easy. Cross Waves are water-retention units that are installed underground to store rain water. By creating large space underground for water, flow of rainwater is controlled and effective utilization is managed.

The vacuum sewer system uses differential pressure to transport wastewater. Since the pipes can be buried at shallower depths compared to conventional gravity sewer systems, the shallow trenches greatly reduce excavation and surface disruption. The shorter construction period helps to minimize traffic congestion as well.

These PE pipes can be used in a variety of locations, for example, underground and in pits, and also can be installed vertically for water supply. Since pipes and fittings are joined using electrofusion, water leaks can be prevented.

Conventionally, steel pipes have been required in fire walls and floor penetration. Fire-shield pipes and fittings make it possible to switch from steel to plastic, thanks to their increased fire resistance.

Super EsloMETAX pipes are used for connecting heat pumps of EcoCute, which uses energy about 20 % of conventional water heaters, to water tanks. It maintains water temperature without the need for additional insulation.

Water Recycling System

Wastewater Treatment Equipment (The Rotating Biological Contactor)

This system efficiently puts water resources to full use, employing Sekisui Chemical Group's water environment related technologies. It controls flows of rainwater through means including storage, seepage, and usage, and it utilizes water resources without wasting them. This system also is highly effective in preventing flood damage.

Since this energy efficient water treatment unit requires no aeration blowers, which use large amount of energy, required power is 60% that of conventional equipment. It cleans wastewater using a microbe membrane, which is fastened to the rotary disk. Oxygen is absorbed from the atmosphere and contaminants are adsorbing from the wastewater and biologically removed. Since the volume of excess sludge generated is less than half that of conventional methods, sludge treatment is also reduced.

The SPR Method is one of the trenchless pipe renewal technologies. A new pipe liner is formed along the inner wall of the host pipe by spirally winding a rigid PVC profile, which is inserted through a manhole. By filling the space between the liner and the host pipe with grout, it forms a renewed composite sewer pipe. Because the SPR Method can be installed in various shapes and sizes and also in live sewage, the disruption to traffic and daily life can be minimized. Construction time and costs can also be saved.
