100% ON METACRITIC! 99% ON ROTTEN TOMATOES! Its plot is the picture of simplicity: a boy grows up. But it is a film of deceiving depth, working as it does to unearth universal truths in the minutia of everyday life. A master-piece of independent filmmaking, Boyhood is nothing short of an emotional epic, one that is moving and entirely unforgettable. Richard Linklater’s decidedly unconventional approach is its masterstroke. Linklater shot “Boyhood” over 12 years. When we first meet the film’s main character—Mason, played by Ellar Coltrane—he is 5 years old and by the time the film ends, Mason is heading off to college. In the meantime, we watch Mason —and Coltrane—grow up before our eyes, sprouting from kindergartener to clueless ado-lescent to brooding teen and, finally, to young man. –New Orleans Times-Picayune

Director: Felix Herngren Sweden, 2013, 114 min; Swedish with subtitlesThere’s more than a sprinkling of magic in this beauti-fully conceived and executed tale about a centenar-ian (Robert Gustafsson) who likes blowing up things. Adapted from Jonas Jonasson’s best selling novel, director Felix Herngren has crafted a clever Swedish black comedy that feels as though it is in perpetual motion. It is full of surprises and if you thought that a film whose central character is 100 years old might be dull and staid, think again. The character is simply a conduit with whom we fly on a madcap carpet ride that incorporates historic events and icons from the past. This uplifting, crowd pleasing entertainment is a road movie, a character study, a wild adventure and black comedy all rolled into one. It’s a helluva ride. —Urban Cinephile

DEAL WITH IT: Untold Stories of Hepatitis C in CanadaMark & Simon Ashdown Canada, 2014, 63 min One of the most pressing but least discussed health concerns facing Canadians today, Hepatitis C has never received the appropriate attention or resources that a serious public health threat demands. Through interviews with patients and healthcare providers, Deal With It documents the despair and the hope of everyday Canadians with this disease.

Director: Zach Braff USA, 2014, 107 min; PGZach Braff (Garden State) plays Aidan, a struggling actor; providing for the family largely falls to his wife, Sarah (Kate Hudson). Sarah and Aidan have two kids, and the family seems to be just barely keeping it all together. Their tenuous balance topples when Aidan’s father (Mandy Patinkin) learns his cancer has metastasized. Patinkin is wonderful, as always. Hudson gives a real and heartfelt performance, too. Wish I Was Here has been billed as a comedy, and there are funny moments, but don’t be fooled: This is a tearjerker. For all its fairy tale reveries and songs from the Shins, the movie manages to dig up some real emotions. –Washington Post

The unconventional, unclassifiable works of the late film essayist Chris Marker con-stantly reinvented the way we look at his-tory, memory, time, and cinema. Offering a nod to Vancouver novelist William Gibson’s Neuromancer, Marker’s newly-available Level Five uses cyberspace for an inquiry into a momentous but little-known tragedy involving mass suicide in wartime Japan. –The Cinematheque Marker’s shock-to-the-senses mind-melter concerns a woman (Catherine Belkhodja) haunted by the loss of her lover while working on programming a video game about World War II’s Battle of Okinawa. Melding retro-futuristic sci-fi imagery, references to American film noir, and reflections on traumas in Japanese history into a visually and philosophically provocative puzzle, Level Five is a hal-lucinatory visual essay on memory, trag-edy, and early digital culture. –Brooklyn Academy of Music

The formula of “The Trip” is repeated — two actors, one semi-famous, the other less famous — off on a dining tour, riffing, debating, insulting and driving. But this time, they’re sent to Italy. Sunshine, local wines, pasta and winding roads along the Amalfi Coast. They’re hitting famous little hotels, lovely restaurants from Alba to Capri, the narrow streets of Rome to the Catacombs of Naples. As in “The Trip,” we’re treated to dueling Michael Caines, Brandos, Pacinos, and Hugh Grants….An altogether delightful vacation. –Movie Nation

“DAFT AND DELIGHTFUL.” –Irish Independent

“Alive Inside” investigates the power music has to awaken deeply locked memories. The film follows Dan Cohen, a social worker, who decides to bring iPods to a nurs-ing home. Many residents suffering from memory loss and Alzheimer’s Disease seem to “awaken” when they are able to listen to music from their past. With great excitement, Dan turns to renowned neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks, and we follow them as we investigate the mysteri-ous way music functions inside our brains and our lives. A joyous celebration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our human-ity. Filmmaker Rosatto-Bennett chronicles the astonish-ing experiences of individuals who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music.   His camera reveals how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short. “Alive Inside”’s inspira-tional and emotional story left audiences  humming, clap-ping and cheering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award. –Rose Theatre

GORE VIDAL: The United States of AmnesiaDirector: Nicholas Wrathall USA, 2013, 83 minEternally opinionated, brilliantly funny and terminally politi-cal, Gore Vidal—novelist, essayist, polemicist, politician, pundit, screenwriter—was the true protean man. Born in 1925, Vidal—openly homosexual from 1948, when his novel The City and the Pillar was published—fashioned a unique professional life that lasted more than 50 years. Using fascinating archival footage from Vidal’s legendary on-air career and illuminating and entertaining interviews—includ-ing an exclusive as he neared the end of his life, as well as one with the late Christopher Hitchens—Nicholas Wrathall’s intimate and rollicking portrait of an American icon also examines Vidal’s global impact on the worlds of arts, poli-tics and everything in between. –Vancouver International Film Festival

“A COMPLEX TALE SUPERBLY TOLD.”

–Village Voice

A lighthearted romance set in 1920s Germany and France. Our hero, Stanley (Colin Firth, amusingly pompous), is a popular stage magician and lifetime skeptic con-scripted by a colleague to travel to a lush Côte d’Azur estate. His task is to debunk a self-proclaimed psychic named Sophie (Emma Stone, strong-willed and alluring), who appears to be bilking a rich old widow out of every cent. Yet try as Stanley might, he’s unable to uncover her trickery, and with each new “miracle” she performs, he falls deeper and deeper in love. It’s a simple premise that Woody Allen complicates with an illusionist’s expertise. “Magic” casts a lovely, lingering spell. –Time Out New York

MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHTDirector: Woody Allen USA, 2014, 99 min; rated GCast: Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Eileen Atkins, Marcia Gay Harden, Hamish Linklater

A movie romance that hits you like a shot in the heart. George (Alfred Molina), a music teacher, and Ben (John Lithgow), an artist, have lived together in Manhattan for nearly 40 years. When state law finally allows them to marry, they do so happily among family and friends. But being legal gets George fired from his Catholic school, forcing them to sell their apartment. While foraging through the jungle of New York real estate, George moves downstairs with two gay cops (Cheyenne Jackson and Manny Perez). Ben squeezes into the Brooklyn apartment of a nephew, his wife (Marisa Tomei, excellent), and their teen son (the extraordinary Charlie Tahan). It’s a setup that director Ira Sachs imbues with the kind of humor and humanity that resonates with the issues of love, sex, separation, aging and loss. Love Is Strange is, above all, a triumph for Lithgow and Molina. Acting doesn’t get better than this. –Rolling Stone

MRS. DOUBTFIREChris Columbus, 1993, 124 min; PGOne of Robin Williams’ most popular films. Playing an unemployed actor who loses custody of his children, he dresses up as a 60-year-old British woman to interview with his ex-wife for a nanny position. He lands the job, but he’ll have to give the performance of his life to keep it.

“A LAUGH RIOT!” –Empire

The director is John Carney, who made the scruffy-gorgeous musical ‘Once’ on the streets of Dublin. Here he repeats the formula with proper money and stars. Keira Knightley is Greta, an English songwriter in New York who’s just been dumped by her rock-star boyfriend (Adam Levine). Greta is singing at an open-mic night when she’s spotted by Dan, a washed-up record producer (Mark Ruffalo). Together they make an album using the sounds of New York as a backdrop. ‘Begin Again’ is about finding your people, about being a bit lost and not knowing who you are or what you want to be. And it’s got bucketfuls of charm. –Time Out London

A MOST WANTED MANAnton Corbijn UK/USA, 2014, 122 min; PGCast: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Grigorly Dobrygin, Willem Dafoe, Robin Wright. The last full-scale Philip Seymour Hoffman perfor-mance—and it’s a master class in acting—comes in this tense, twisty and terrific spy thriller, based on John le Carré’s novel. Hoffman plays a German intelligence operative. Since 9/11, Günther has been heading a spy unit that tracks the Muslim commu-nity in Hamburg, where the attack on America was formulated. A newly arrived Chechen-Russian hires a human-rights lawyer (Rachel McAdams) to collect his father’s fortune. Is his motive to fund terrorism? Günther wants to know. So does everyone else, including the CIA, in the person of Robin Wright. The cat-and-mouse game is splendidly done. Hoffman is simply magnificent. –Rolling Stone

Director: John Michael McDonagh Ireland, 2014, 101 min; 14AA darkly funny look at the nature of faith in a world gone wrong, starring Brendan Gleeson as a good priest in a small parish in the west of Ireland. Taking confession, Father James hears something he’s never heard before: “I’m going to kill you,” the man on the other side of the screen vows. The parishioner explains that as an altar boy he was sexu-ally abused. To punish Father James for the sins of his fel-low priests seems like the perfect, ironic act of retribution. Gleeson’s priest has a week to get his life in order.
