1. Title of the school’s programme

MAL-THAI INTERNATIONAL CAMP AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM

2. Summary of the programme (a half to one page A4)

The Mal- Thai International Camp and Cultural Exchange Program really captures the essence of

fostering global citizenship for sustainable future as it highlights 3 global areas of education, culture

and citizenship among the participants. Embracing the objective of cultural exchange, participants

from both schools, Kepala Batas Science Secondary School, Malaysia and Wichienmatu School,

Thailand were involved in many riveting , culturally rich activities. There were about 180 students

who involved in this program along with 50 teachers. The students’ committee involved were

mostly from UNESCO Club members, English Language Society members as well as School Youth

Cadets. This one week program was held in the month of May at Kepala Batas Science Secondary

School. What makes this program extraordinary and fruitful was that it was divided into 2 slots: 4

days were spent at the school for the Choral Speaking Workshop and Traditional Dance Workshop

Page 3: Mal-Thai International Camp and Cultural Exchange Program

3

whereas the remaining 3 days were spent outdoor at Lembah Bujang, Kedah camp site.

In the first slot, students from Malaysia shared their knowledge on the art of Choral Speaking as

well as Malays traditional dance of Endang and Caklempong, a popular traditional musical

instrument. In return, the Thailand students taught our students the Traditional Thailand dances as

well as donning the unique and colourful Thai’s traditional costumes. In addition, in conjunction of

the Visit Malaysia for the Year 2014, the participants from Wichienmantu School were given the

opportunity to visit interesting and historical places in Penang Island and some parts of Kedah. As

Penang is also known as the UNESCO Heritage Site, the students had fun under the sunshine while

visiting tourist attractions such as Kek Lok Si Pagoda, Penang Hill, Feringghi Beach as well as

savouring the unique local delicacies such as roti canai, pasembor and nasi lemak.

As for the second slot, students had their camping and outdoor activities at Lembah Bujang, Kedah.

This camp was held to expose the students about the importance of bonding and gadgets camping

knowledge as contained in the syllabus and learning in the Cadet Handbook of Youth School. It

taught the students about survival skills as well as cultivating teamwork and unity among

participants of various cultures and backgrounds.

3. Background information or reasons why the school created this programme

Since 2009 until the present day, there are more than 10 programs between Kepala Batas Science

Secondary School and Wichienmathu School, Trang, Thailand. The bond between these two

schools is strengthen by the Memorandum of Understanding(M.U.O) signed in 2010 by the

previous Excellent Principal, Madam Hajjah Jamaah Binti Hj. Taman, P.J.K and was supported by

the City Council of Trang Chairman, Mr Charlie. Through this agreement, the collaboration is not

limited to exchange in terms of extracurricular activities such as cultural exchange and Young Pilot

Program, but also has extended to improving the English standard in both schools especially in

Science and Mathematics subjects. Therefore, this program is designed to further enhancing the

collaboration between both schools under the Internationalization and Networking Initiative of the

High Performance School Program.

4. Objectives/goals of the programme

-Provide a feasible medium for students from both countries to share their unique talents in

traditional dancing and playing the traditional musical instruments.

-Exposing the Wichienmatu students and teachers to Coral Speaking techniques and presentations.

-Exchange ideas between the Language teachers in further developing the students potential in

language usage as well as confidence to display it in vast audience.

-Celebrating the ASEAN Spirit between the two countries as a form of unity although with different

background.

- Produce students to become proficient in bonding and gadgets Camp.

Page 4: Mal-Thai International Camp and Cultural Exchange Program

-Promote leadership skills, a sense of responsibility, teamwork and unity through the carried out

activities

5. Core competencies of students (e.g. knowledge and understanding, cognitive skills, non-cognitive

skills and behavioural capacities) that the school aims for within the programme.

There are several core competencies that the school aims for in these programmes namely:

-communication skills

-creative and critical thinking

-community /global awareness and responsibility

-personal, academic and career development

All of these core competencies could be achieved from the above activities:

1) Choral Speaking Workshop

Students learnt the step-by-step process of performing a choral speaking. As in Thailand,

they do not have any exposure on choral speaking thus this workshop was able to steal their

attention and interests. Students started the whole process from scratch where they needed to

compose their own choral speaking text. Then, they must learn the correct pronunciation,

stress, tone, voice projection as well as the physical movements. Everything must be

synchronized in order for them to deliver the best presentation. At the same time, students

eventually were able to improve their English Language mastery and interests as they

practiced together.

2) Cultural Exchange Program

Students from both schools could improve their kinesthetic and psychomotor skills as they

were taught the traditional dances of both countries. In addition, the Malaysian students

shared their knowledge by teaching the Thai’s students on how to play the traditional

instrument, Caklempong. In contrast, we were able to learn about Thai’s musical instrument.

3) Basic Course For Bonding And Gadgets Camp

In this program, it trained the students’ knowledge associated with bonding and camping

crafts. It also measuring the level of relevant skills knowledge given through the

competition that will be participated by them. Students were required to demonstrate their

cognitive skills and applied them in real world situation. At the same time, students needed

to employ their leadership skills and other relevant interpersonal skills to succeed in the

challenges and competitions.

8. Teaching and learning methodologies that the school applies for promoting the core competencies as

identified in number 5

In order to promote the core competencies, several teaching and learning methodologies

are employed underpinning the activities held. The first methodology is learning English Language

in fun and entertaining way namely through Choral Speaking. A choral speaking is defined as a

group of people narrating a poem or a dramatic piece. What makes it more exciting is the group

often using various voice combinations and contrasts to bring out the meaning or tonal beauty of a

passage of poetry or prose. As this activity is rather new to the Thailand’s students, a special

workshop was held conducted by the English teachers. Students were shown relevant videos of

choral speaking performances to trigger their interests. This activity is conducted in small groups

and each group will get their own facilitators among the students. The activity highlights task

oriented, discussion and Socratic methods.

Apart from that, two methodologies are from

difficulty in the course

The second one is playing music from other countries. The Malaysian students learnt how

to play a musical instrument called Khim , hammered dulcimer which was classified as idiophone.

On the other hand, the Thai’s students learnt the mastery of musical instrument named Caklempong,

a small kettle gong which gives its name to an ensemble of four or five caklempong as well as other

gongs and drums. Due to time constraints, constant repetition is essential in learning to play an

instrument. Children do not learn a word or piece of music and then discard it. They add it to their

vocabulary or repertoire, gradually using it in new and more sophisticated ways. As some of the

students have the existing schemata or background knowledge of reading the musical notes, the

learning process became smooth and came in handy. The students participated in regular group

practice and performance at which they learnt from and are motivated by each other.

Lastly, the methodologies for bonding and camping gadgets activities involve task based

learning and cooperative learning. From these activities, students learnt about esprit de corps, the

feeling of loyalty, enthusiasm and devotion to a group among people who are members of the

group. Students involve in hands on activities as they did the bonding and camping gadget

activities. Thus, their survival skills are tested in the activities they are engaged with. Camping is

indeed a fun, affordable and memorable activity for many. It also presents excellent education

opportunities. For examples they learn about nature study and outdoor appreciations, environmental

ethics and dealing with discomforts.

9. Partnership, community participation and international connection (Details of partners, their roles

and activities that they have involved)

The partnership between Kepala Batas Science Secondary School and Wichienmathu School,

Trang, Thailand is rather extraordinary because as the saying goes, “good friends are like stars. You

don’t always see them but you know they’re always there.” Since 2009 until the present day, there

are more than 10 programs between Kepala Batas Science Secondary School and Wichienmathu

School, Trang, Thailand. The bond between these two schools is strengthen by the Memorandum of

Understanding(M.U.O) signed in 2010. Several visits were held between both schools and it

normally involved the whole community participations from parents, students and local community.

Last year, Mal-Thai International Camp was held in Trang therefore marking a significant long

lasting relationship. Thus, this year the camp was again held in Merbok, Kedah. Other engaging

activities apart from camping are Cultural Exchange Program, Educational Visit to Krabi, Festive

celebrations, Traditional Food Festival, Foster Family and many more yet to come.

10. Monitoring and evaluation mechanisms and summary of results

Monitoring and evaluation mechanisms:

As usual two monitoring and evaluation mechanism are utilized to ensure the effectiveness of the

program.

1. Questionnaire

The questionnaires are distributed to all the students and teachers involved and they need to

answer them individually. Some questionnaires are also given via emails. The data and

information are then analyzed and we were able to gather an overall picture of what the

participants think about the program. The inputs collected are used for future improvements.

2. Post Mortem

A post mortem meeting was also held among the committees. A brief report was given by

all those who involved in the program. A written report also was submitted along with the

pictures.

Summary of results:

Some of the significant results are:

80 % of the respondents think the program is very useful and hope that it will be conducted again in

the future

75% of the respondents said they are more confident to communicate with their friends in English

Language

90% of the respondents said they gain new experiences and develop friendship in the program

Rooms for improvements

1. More time need to be given for the students to prepare for their choral speaking competition

(more practice).

2. There will be a special workshop in order to teach the students the composing skills of

Page 8: Mal-Thai International Camp and Cultural Exchange Program
