On behalf of the committee and all club members, we would
like to congratulate our club swimmer Chelsea Gubecka and
head coach Barry Kime for their selection as national
representatives at the FINA World Championships in
Barcelona in July. For more details see page 8.
Although we are already looking
forward to the new swimming season
April was such an intense month and
full of excitement for the Mighty
Makos.
Some of our swimmers competed at
various ocean swim events, while
some of our age group and open
category swimmers swam at nationalevents, both teams enjoying great
successes, and, as you might know,
one of the Makos will be competing at
the World Championships in July!
We also had our AGM, club break-up
and presentations day; see what our
newly elected president and committee
have on their minds for the new
season.

Hello and a warm welcome to all swimmers,
members, readers and visitors!
This is our first newsletter for the 2013-14 season and
on behalf of the clubs new committee I would like to
welcome you all and look forward to meeting you
throughout the year.
My name is Lionel Wootton-McDonald and with my
wife, Angela & our daughter Ivy, we are relative
newcomers to the club. Our daughter, Ivy has been
involved with swimming and water activities and
sports since she was born. We recommenced our
relationship with Mountain Creek Mooloolaba in 2011
and joined the local club in 2012. We certainly have
enjoyed every moment, especially the warm, friendly
and welcoming family atmosphere of this club. It is all
about the kids, fun, health and having the opportunity
to be as good as you can amongst a group of
supportive and happy swimmers and their families.
Little did we know what super coaches and an
extraordinarily talented group of swimmers we were
to meet! After a most enjoyable year and the changes
they sometimes bring I find myself willingly involved
in leading our club into a new chapter.
We have a talented and enthusiastic new committee that only want the most for our swimmers and their
families. We are all looking forward to an exciting year and sharing it with you all. If we have half the
success our kids do when training, competing & having fun together then we will have learned and achieved
a lot and had a wonderful year together.
What a start to the year! So many of our swimmers have achieved personal milestones, culminating with
numerous District, State, National and even International representatives. As I write we have 2 competitors in
the Australian Open Championships and a member of the Australian team headed to Barcelona in Chelsea
Gubecka. Of course it is always about striving to be your best rather than necessarily being the best however
we are all fortunate have Chelseas coach and family at our club and for the kids to have her as a role model.
Well done & congratulations to everyone involved!
This year will be new and exciting commencing with our A-grade meet in July to commence the short course
season. There is a lot to do and we look forward to everyones involvement to make this a stunning success
for our kids and their club.
We will update everyone regularly, encourage your feedback and welcome your participation and assistance
throughout the year. Its all about the kids and our club - Go the Makos!

The new season of swim meets is about to start and so that we are all ready, we
will be contacting all current member with reminders of renewing theirmembership with Swimming Queensland as well as encouraging up and coming
new swimmers to become members before the season starts. Annual registrationruns from 1 July to 30 June the following year, so new members will becomemembers from the 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2014. Current swimmers membership
will expire 30 June 2013 and will need to be renewed online on 1 July 2013. If youhave any question regarding registration or need help, please see Stephen Kime, our Registrar.
At the beginning of each season, the coaches and committee members put togetherthe target swim meets for the season. As this is still being finalised, we will besending out the final program once completed. This schedule will also be on ourwebsite once approved and all members will be notified by email. It is good for
swimmers, especially new swimmers, to swim at as many target meets as they canas the coach in attendance will help and guide on the day. Other swim meets noton the schedule can still be attended and are great for gaining race experience,
however, there will not be a coach in attendance. If you need any furtherinformation regarding swim meets and where to go, please speak to your coachfirst and Zonya Bird, the clubs race secretary.
Further details will be given once plans are finalised and everyone will be notified
by email. Watch this space for new info as well as the website and Facebook page.
Thank you everyone and look forward to an amazing swim season

Riding on the back of a successfulinaugural swim meet on 24 February2013, MCM Makos has been given an Agrade meet 27 and 28 July 2013. This is
a fantastic opportunity for the club toshowcase our pool and what we can do.
As you can imagine, there is a lot of preparation to do and planning is well
underway for this great event. We will be calling on all our swimmers and parents, both current and new to pull together as a team and make this event one to standout from the rest.

Australian Open Championships26 April - 6 May 2013
On Day 2 of the Championships Chelsea and
Phoebe competed in the womens 1500m freestyle
preliminaries. Both girls had a great swim,
Chelsea qualified with the fastest time from the
preliminaries and Phoebe qualified fourth for the
finals. That, by itself, is an awesome achievement.
Congratulations to Makos swimmers Chelsea Gubecka and Phoebe Hines who competed at the EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships in Adelaide. The event was held from 26 April to 3 May; it also doubled as
a selection trial for the FINA World Championships.
In the final Chelsea took an early lead and increased
the gap with each lap to finish in a championship
record time of 16:22.35, lowering her personal best
time by more than 22 seconds. What a fabulous swim,
Chelsea! Phoebe also put on an excellent
performance, finishing in 6th place with a huge PB of
over 10 seconds, which is a fantastic result!
Later in the week Chelsea produced some morefantastic results in the 800m freestyle final where
she finished 8th and in the 400m IM where she
finished as a reserve for the final.
Congratulations should go to our coach Barry Kime
who prepared the Makos girls for the
championships. Barry has also been selected as a
coach on the national team; he and Chelsea will be
off to the AIS for the orientation camp with the
Australian team, while Phoebe Hines and our other
great distance swimmer Kareena Lee will
participate in a one-week open water camp inParramatta.
Well done Chelsea, Phoebe and Barry, the club is very
proud of your achievements!
Congratulations to Chelsea
who has been selected as a
member of the Energy
Australia Swim Team to
represent Australia at the
FINA World Championships
in Barcelona. She will
contest the 1500m pool
event and the 10km openwater event at the World
Championships in July.

Nutrition for TeenagersThe teenage years mark one of the greatest
periods of change during our lifetime -
physical, emotional and intellectual changes
in particular. Physical changes include the
final 15-20% of growth in height and 50% of
adult body weight. This rapid growth
increases the body's demand for energy and
nutrients including iron, zinc and calcium.
It is important that teenagers make
nutritious food choices so they can satisfy
both their hunger and increased nutritional
needs. Eating the right foods in the right
amounts at the right times will assist with
their energy levels, keep their brain alert and
help the body cope with stress. Preparation
is key to help teenagers make good
decisions on what they eat. Here are some
great ideas to help.
