MAINLANDS UNIT 2 TOWN CRIER JANUARY 2017 1 PRESIDENT’S CORNER Fay Burgeson, President, Unit 2 Homeowners Association (On behalf of your Homeowners Board) Happy New Year! A brand, new year,….time to restart that project, assess our lives, count our blessings, re-dedicate ourselves to the important things in life…. WOW! That can be a huge list. Yes, I need to drop a few pounds, balance my checkbook, and get more exercise. Sometimes it can be exhausting just thinking about it. Not that I am an expert, but I’ve been told to take one thing at a time. So, that’s what I will try to do. Hope it works this time. We’ve had a great year here in Unit 2. We replaced one of the air-conditioners in the clubhouse and put in a new heat pump at the pool which not only heats the pool, but cools it in the summer! We hired new people to care for our grass and they are doing a great job. If you haven’t noticed, we have a large sink in the back of the clubhouse just outside the kitchen door. Now, it won’t be such a chore to wash some of those huge pots and pans that are used in our dinner events. For the future, we have some new club officers with new ideas and new energy, a list of items for consideration to improve our lives and expect to get our sidewalks and gutters repaired in the very near future. As always, we need your help. Think about volunteering this next year if you haven’t done so in the past. Thank you for your support this past year and in the next! GOLF CART PARADE A SUCCESS Charlie Hemeon – Chairman

On Sunday December 11th Unit 2 once again held its annual Golf Cart Parade. We had 25 decorated golf carts that paraded around Mainlands Blvd. and despite a light rain everyone seemed to enjoy the parade. There were people at each clubhouse that cheered for their favorite golf cart as the parade passed. A special thank you to Bob Whitlock for arranging a very large fire engine to lead the parade. It certainly added a great deal to the parade. After the parade we had over 75 people at the clubhouse for refreshments and an award presentation. Sally Kruse and Gerry McCloskey won first prize and they will be the first winners to be recognized on our beautiful John Brigham trophy. A formal trophy presentation will take place in January. Thank you to all the many people who stepped forward to make everything run smoothly. Start drawing up your designs for next year.

SOCIAL CLUB NEWS CONNIE VAWTER, PRESIDENT

My term as President of our Social Club is over. I want to thank everyone for the support they have given to the social club, and me this

past year. I thank the Board as well. A special thank you to Gail Arnsenault for making the inquiry of the President Position on our Social

Club Board. I will be here to assist in whatever is necessary. We had another great Christmas Charity Show to end 2016. Over $ 3,500 was donated to our charities (St. Vincent’s, St Giles Food Pantry and Hospice of Pinellas). Thank you to everyone for all of their hard work and for participating in the show. Special thanks to Phyllis Wisehoon, Jeanine Niemeier and Dolores Watrous for holding us together.

A special thank you to all who helped organize our 2016 Homeowners’ Christmas Party. There were 30+ individuals who made the night a great success. We had 141 residents attend and all seemed to have a great time. It was a night of talking and sharing information with their old neighbors and meeting new ones as well. Thank you to: Jim and Liz Schimpf for having another successful Scratch off Event - $ 674 was raised – and the winners of the Scratch Off Tickets were Marie Soucy and Shane Jaegar. John Brigham made a beautiful Christmas Sled and Jan Mekeel made two Hanging Quilts that were raffled. Sandi Stamper and Millie Cole provided the table decorations. Last, but certainly not least to Charlie Hemeon for taking on the Golf Cart Parade. Please continue to support your Board in all of their events – who knows you may really enjoy getting involved.

The Unit 2 Social, Men’s and Women's Clubs Bring You Our Unit 2 Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. It will be on Saturday, January 21st at 5 p.m. Chairpersons are Connie Vawter and Charlie Hemeon. This event will once again be a catered dinner and will be free, but there will be a $ 5 deposit for the ticket that will be refunded to you at the door. Tickets will be available from Rachel Filiau (727) 578-2341. Your last opportunity to get your tickets will be January 18th at Kaffee Klatch. Tickets are limited, so if you have volunteered to help make Unit 2 a fun, friendly place to live get your tickets now. No one will be admitted without a ticket. We have some very nice Door Prizes - so your ticket is necessary.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO UPDATE THE TELEPHONE DIRECTORY The publisher of our directories is once again asking for us to make our changes and submit them so the names and numbers can be updated in the new 2017-2018 directories. Please take a moment to look at your listing. If it is not as you want it, please let me know. We have until the beginning of next year, but please do it now while you are thinking about it. If you need more than one entry as there are two or more phones to be listed, please let me know. When the new directories are published, you will have to wait another year to make changes. Add this to your list of goals for 2017….UPDATE THE PHONE DIRECTORY.

Faith Burgeson, President, HOA Board

We have more new neighbors! Let’s welcome:

Eugene and Carol London moved in back in November. They now reside at 10142 – 45th Way. Hope they have settled in and that their neighbors are making them feel welcome.

Susan Walzer joined us this month moving into the home at 4408 – 101st Ave. We are anxious to get to know her.

Robert and Petrona Waters will be renting the home at 4114-100th Ave N. They will be closer to their son who lives in St Petersburg. What a nice way to start the New Year.

Donald Freedman, an avid bridge player. is excited to be living so close to the Bridge Club at the strip mall. He will reside at 10152 43rd Street and Bill Mills is already keeping an eye on his place until he moves in. You can’t get much better security than that!

Susan Cook will now be joining us at her new residence, 4204 100th Ave N. She has been looking for the right opportunity and is so happy that she has found it. We look forward to getting to know her and enjoy her company.

With new people moving in, we will be missing the folks that lived in those homes. We are grateful for the contribution they made to our lives and will enjoy meeting these new neighbors.

Please reach out to these new residents and make them feel welcome in our “neighborhood”.

HELP WANTED – NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY We need someone to print the posters and tickets for all of the events that are scheduled throughout the year. It’s helpful if you are familiar with the computer – nothing fancy we have the software that will do the work for you and we are willing to train. Any expenses you incur will be reimbursed. It’s always fun to learn something new and this is a very rewarding experience. Where else can you have your art work hanging in the clubhouse. If interested call Fay Burgeson at (727) 577-9534. Really, it isn’t that hard. Also looking for a Block Captain to deliver the TOWN CRIER and other correspondence from the Home Owners Board. This is a great way to meet your neighbors and get some exercise.

Geri Piver is that rare person that everyone considers their friend. Her positive attitude, her sparkling smile and willingness to help anyone that needs help is what makes her so special. Geri moved to Pinellas Park in 1970 had six children and was widowed with four children still at home. She was a travel agent for 20 years and after the children were grown did extensive traveling. In 2005 Gerri moved to Mainlands Unit 2 and hasn’t stopped volunteering since then. She shares her time and talents with multiple agencies in Pinellas County. She was the coordinator for St. Vincent’s DePaul for several years and now the coordinator for His Heart Society (collecting and distributing food for those that are in need), volunteers at Hospice,

member of Sacred Heart Church where she has done everything from driving a bus, teaching, serving as an usher, lector and Eucharistic Minister. Gerri recently received the St. Jude Award for 2016. (The St. Jude the Apostle Medal is awarded to a lay member of a parish for distinguished and outstanding service to their parish and community.) Since moving to Unit 2, she has volunteered for the Women’s Club, Bingo, and recently performed in the Annual Charity Party in the memorable roles of the monkey and the pious nun. Those two roles describe Geri to a “T” - a fun “loving monkey” and an “ever pious nun”. Geri loves to ride her bike and swim – so if you’re out walking or swimming and see her, smile and she will smile back and if you get a chance – pat her on the back. She deserves it. ***********************************************************************

RULES - DO YOU REMEMBER THIS ONE?

PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG! We know that many of you have small dogs, but their leavings still create a mess on your shoes! Absolutely no pets should be in the pool area. Your dog needs to be on a leash at all times. You may know your

dog well enough to let him/her walk beside you, but another dog can be a great distraction causing a situation that could create a panic for someone.

Do not forget those that just like to walk and do not necessarily want your dog walking with them or jumping on them.

Please be a good neighbor and be respectful where your dog is concerned. Our pets will be better appreciated when they are well-behaved and following the rules.

KAFFEE KLATCH We need volunteers for serving behind the counter and cleaning up after. Please sign up on the bulletin board. This is an important part of Kaffee Klatch and I hope that we will see more names on the signup sheet for the coming months. If you plan to sponsor a Kaffee Klatch for a special event, please notify Millie Cole at (727) 577-6040 as far in advance as possible so that she can be prepared.

CRIME PATROL FOR UNIT 2

The crime patrol needs more volunteers. Wouldn’t you like to volunteer? You only have to look and listen – if you see something suspicious – call Pinellas Park Police (727) 541-0758. If you are interested, call Peter Whyte at (603) 662-6044. Please help to keep our Unit 2 safe.

STAY OFF OF THE ROOF

All of our roofs are tile and might break if someone walks on them. Also, if you have your trees trimmed, be sure the tree trimmers are aware of where the limbs will fall and make sure

the debris does not fall on the roof.
