In just over a week we begin the penultimate month of the year! October has been a busy month for our Club. We had a lovely fall brunch at the Scarritt-Bennett Center yesterday. Established in Nashville in 1924 as the Scarritt College for Christian Workers, the school trained women missionaries. My aunt Sarah was one of them! When the college closed in 1988, the Scarritt-Bennett Center was created, and it is a gem of collegiate gothic architecture, nestled in the heart of Nashville on 10 tree-filled acres—a perfect setting for our fall event. Many thanks to our indefatigable Hospitality Chair, Kendra Holroyd, for scouting this venue and planning our delicious brunch. Throughout this past summer, our Community Explorer Chair, Anne Manner, was hard at work planning interesting trips for us to take this year. This picture was taken on September 28 th during our outing to The Hermitage, Andrew Jackson’s Tennessee home. We were greeted by our own Pam King (VP of Development at The Hermitage), who is a wealth of information about Jackson and the American history of his time. Pam treated us to a wonderful introduction to the Hermitage and surprised us with lovely playing card gift sets for everyone. In October Explorers visited the Vanderbilt Fine Arts Gallery and the City Cemetery for the Living History tour, and we have more fun trips in store. Go, Anne! VANDERBILT

WOMAN’S CLUB

President’s message Greetings, all! November already?

This picture was taken on September 28th during our outing to The Hermitage, Andrew Jackson’s Tennessee home. We were greeted by our own Pam King (VP of Development at The Hermitage), who is a wealth of information about Jackson and the American history of his time. Book Group Two members had just finished Jon Meacham’s American Lion, and were eager to see the home of our “born for a storm” seventh president. Pam treated us to a wonderful introduction to the Hermitage and surprised us with lovely playing card gift sets for everyone. In October Explorers visited the Vanderbilt Fine Arts Gallery and the City Cemetery for the Living History tour, and we have more fun trips in store. Go, Anne!

Our first VWC Lecture is coming up on November 12th with the dynamic Chris Slobogin (Vanderbilt Law), so you’ll want to be sure to sign up with Kelly Chambers

([email protected]) as well as order lunch (form is on page nine). Chris is a wonderful speaker and long-time supporter of the Club; you won’t want to miss his lecture. Enjoy the glorious autumn weather, and I’ll see you soon!

The Vanderbilt Woman’s Club acknowledges the late Margaret Branscomb, wife of Chancellor Harvie Branscomb,

,for the major plantings of the magnolia trees on campus and honors her in the naming of the newsletter.

The Vanderbilt Woman’s Club brings together the women of Vanderbilt University; provides an opportunity for intellectual, cultural and social activities within the community and the University; supports and assists the mission of the University; and

sponsors the Vanderbilt Woman’s Club Stapleton/Weaver Endowed Scholarship through fundraising.

Member for all seasons . . . Hara Hackett has two careers. She attended James Madison University, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and then her Master's Degree in Clarinet Performance. After teaching public school for a year in Brooklyn, New York, and freelancing in New York City, Hara won the United States Air Force Band clarinet position in Dayton, Ohio, and served in that capacity from 1997-2000. For the past five years, she has been a regular substitute clarinetist for the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. She has been a member of the clarinet section in the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival Orchestra, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, for 10 years. In addition to the orchestral playing, Hara also enjoys subbing in the Gersthaus German Restaurant's Polka Band. Hara’s private students regularly win positions in the Nashville Youth Symphony, Tennessee Governor's School, Tennessee All-State Band, as well as the Middle Tennessee State Band and Orchestra Directors' Association (MTSBOA) and have regularly won scholarships to local and out-of-state universities and conservatories as performance or music education majors. She is also the Nashville Dog Runner™ and will provide you with the best service in dog running/ walking and pet-sitting. When your busy schedule does not allow you to leave your office in the middle of the day to walk Fido, she will be there to help. She loves dogs (and cats). She also pet-sits in the comfort of your home and will be part of the Whole Foods, Green Hills SpOokY PuP celebration on October 24th from 10am-2pm in the Y parking lot.
