Reconnect with AETN this summer as we kick off our June membership campaign and rejuvenate your vacation schedule with AETN activities in Arkansas’s state and national parks.

AETN has been a source of unique program-ming and opportunities for viewers like

you for 43 years. Remember “Good Times Picture Show,” “The Joy of Painting,” “Arkansas Serenade” and “The Electric Company”? Remember why you love AETN?

If you do, then we need you to respond with a gift of support during our June Membership campaign June 20-25. AETN fell significantly short in our annual March drive despite much enthusiasm, due in part to problems associated with the digital delay and the struggling economy. We have plans in place to try to make up the difference this month, but we need you to react to the AETN Foundation’s great need.

Renew your membership today, or gift a membership to your dad for Father’s Day. Reduce your carbon footprint, and opt for a green member-ship. Reinvest in your AETN with a monthly sustainer contribution or a corporate match. Know people who aren’t members? Restore their faith in quality programming, and challenge them to give.

And what a summer to be an AETN member. Beginning June 1, we have a full schedule of activities related to Ken Burns’ latest documentary, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.” Refresh your take on the natural state with our AETN Parks Passport, screening, family events, contests, exhibits and more. (Learn more on page 6 of this issue.)

Staying out of the heat this summer? Then check out the new PBS video portal (pbs.org/video) that allows viewers to stream some of our best-known shows over the Internet. The new site debuted with marquee fare such as "Frontline," "Nova" and "Masterpiece." The really exciting news: in addition to acting as a clearinghouse for PBS content, the portal will be featured on the AETN Web site and will function as the hub for AETN's award-winning local and regional programming.

As always, the AETN Commissioners, the AETN Foundation Board, our many volunteers and the superb AETN staff are grateful for the chance to serve you each and every day.

AETN reserves the right to make programming adjustments and preemp-tions that enhance the relevance of its program service. Although accurate at the time of printing, this guide should be used in conjunction with current newspaper, TV magazine listings and Internet.

Answers from Viewer Services...

June 12, 2009, will be a monumental day in television history. For years, television stations and viewers have been preparing for the end of analog and the beginning of digital only broadcast. On the morning of June 12, AETN will discontinue analog broadcasting on its three remaining analog transmitters- KAFT/Fayetteville, KEMV/Mt. View and KETG/Arkadelphia. Viewers who do not have a digital-to-analog converter box hooked up to their analog television set will no longer be able to receive a signal over the air after June 12.

For viewers in Central and South Arkansas, this is the date for which you have been patiently waiting! KETS/Channel 2 and KETZ/Channel 10 will resume broadcasting in digital on June 13. Over-the-air viewers will need to rescan their converter boxes or digital television sets. DirecTV and cable subscribers who have been without AETN for the last several months will once again be able to view our programming once their provider resumes carrying the AETN digital feeds.

Over-the-air viewers who currently or in the past received a clear analog picture, should also receive a clear digital signal. However, those who have had a slightly- to very snowy picture may not be able to receive any digital signal. In either case, over-the-air viewers who rely on an indoor antenna (rabbit ears) may need to install a roof-top outdoor antenna, while those already using an outdoor antenna may need to raise it up higher. The digital signal is much more sensitive than analog and susceptible to more interference. Metal siding, roofing, and even mini-blinds as well as moun-tains, large hills, buildings, and electrical interference can disrupt or prevent digital reception. Viewers are encouraged to visit the FCC’s Web site, www.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/maps, to check reception coverage for your location. Anytime you experience a breakup in your signal, try adjusting your antenna or doing a rescan on your converter box. An interactive troubleshooting guide is also available on the FCC’s Web site at www.dtv.gov/iguide.htm.

Even if you’ve had a converter box hooked up to your analog television set for a while, you should still rescan for chan-nels on June 13. Many stations will be increasing their signal strength or switching channel frequencies, and you may be able to receive stations that were previously unavailable.

Remember; if you subscribe to cable or satellite you do not need to make any additional preparations for those television sets connected to that service.

Please do not wait until June 12 to hook up your converter box, as you could potentially be without television service for an unknown amount of time. While AETN is willing to assist with technical questions, each viewer does bear the final responsibility to make any preparations to receive digital television.

PARKSSTATE & NATIONAL

I N I T I A T I V E

AETN invites you join us in a summer of adventure and learning with the AETN State & National Parks Initiative, which has been developed in conjunction with the upcoming Ken Burns’ documentary, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” airing in September.

To kick off many months of parks-related outdoor activities, AETN developed the Parks Passport, a free interactive guide to encourage children and families to explore Arkansas’s state and national parks. We are distributing the Passport free of charge to all Arkansans to motivate them to get outdoors, visit state and national parks and learn about the beauty of nature.

Here’s how it works:• Order your Passport by visiting www.aetn.org/parks or calling 800-662-2386.• Visit Arkansas’s national parks sites and state parks highlighted in the Passport.• Stop at the visitor center to receive a stamp in the Passport.• After visiting all the parks, mail the tear-out postcard from the Passport to AETN.• Win prizes for visiting parks!

Participants are also invited to submit their photos, videos and comments about the park trips at www.aetn.org/parks.

The Legacy Project and the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN)in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Education, offered a cross-curricular workshop for teachers, administrators, counselors, and media specialists Friday, April 24. Using her award-winning picture book DREAM: A Tale of Wonder, Wisdom & Wishes, educator and author Susan V. Bosak led an motivational, engaging and idea-filled session. Susan offered techniques which encourage students to plan their futures, set and achieve life goals, and improve literacy skills. DREAM has won 11 national awards, among them an International Reading Association Children's Choice Award and a Teachers' Choice Award. Fifteen highly acclaimed illustrators including two time Caldecott Medal winners Leo and Diane Dillon, Raúl Colón, and Shaun Tan – have each created a gorgeously illustrated page to comple-ment a multilayered, poetic story about life's hopes and dreams from childhood to adulthood. Says The Bloomsbury Review, "Richly crafted and thoughtfully written, Dream is a dazzling project."Teachers experienced a multimedia presentation of the book. Then, after a "big picture" review of the top ten findings from research, Susan shared classroom-tested lesson ideas using DREAM as a model. The program helps students build an understanding of meaning found in words and pictures, of themselves, and of the world. Lesson ideas support the Arkansas Frameworks for the English Language Arts. Teachers get ideas for using the book for skill building – meaning, interpreta-tion, inference, cross-curricular connections, and planful competence. Dream encourages students to imagine their futures, plan the steps to accomplish their hopes, and take action to make their dreams come true.Susan V. Bosak brought a golden opportunity for educators and students alike with her presentation! Susan is a word weaver, an explorer of ideas, and a dreamer of the finest sense.

Natural History ofthe Chicken

Wednesday, June 10, 7 p.m.

Most people best know the chicken from their dinner plates - whether as thigh, wing or drumstick. Consumers rarely pause a moment to consider the bird's many vir-tues. Filmmaker Mark Lewis (Cane Toads: An Unnatural History and Rat) expands the frontiers of popular awareness and delight-fully reveals that this small, common and seemingly simple animal is as complex and grand as any of Earth's creatures.

DESIGN SQUADSundays in June,

6:30 p.m.

Sammie Benjamin of Glenwood has been elected as the new chair of the AETN Commission. She has served on the commission since 1999 and brings more than 25 years experience as a public school teacher in Arkansas.

“As chairman of the commission, I will devote my time and support to upholding the mission of AETN,” Benjamin said. “I look forward to working with AETN’s leadership as we encourage the people of Arkansas to discover their world, broaden their horizons and become active participants in shaping the future of public broadcasting.

“AETN provides tremendous learning opportunities to the citizens of Arkansas through the continuous

enhancement of the educational environment. We motivate children to learn, empower students and teachers to succeed, and provide a lifelong path to learning. AETN is a center of discovery for people of all ages. We encourage Arkansans to connect, grow and lead healthy, productive and fulfilling lives.”

Benjamin has served as the high school media specialist and Quiz Bowl coach at Centerpoint High School for 12 years and was recently selected Teach of the of Year in the Centerpoint School District. She is an Arkansas Governor’s Quiz Bowl Association board member and also spent 11 years as elementary media specialist in Texarkana and two years as a first grade teacher.

Benjamin holds a BSE in elementary education and library science from Ouachita Baptist University and an ME in educational leadership from Harding University. She and her husband John have four children and three grandchildren.

Working as an intern in the AETN Programming Division has given me the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of a television station. From the prep work that goes in to a production to responding to viewer feedback, I had the chance to experience it all. One day I helped interview a veteran taking part in AETN’s WWII Oral History Project, In Their Words. During the March pledge drive, I gained experience running studio camera and working in the control room. From a pro-gramming standpoint, I learned about the challenges of creating a balanced

program schedule for the entire population of Arkansas. One of my main responsibilities was helping with Viewer Services. Before interning at AETN, I had no idea of the devotion people have to public television. After seeing the care and detail put into every production and viewer response, I have more of an appreciation for public television. I am grateful to the AETN staff for helping me make the most of my intern experience. The skills and knowledge I gained are invaluable to a college student who will soon transition to the professional world.

AETN Features Selected Films from the 2009 Little Rock Film FestivalAiring June 14 at 10:30 p.m.

In May of 2009, AETN was proud to partner once again with the Little Rock Film Festival and give film lovers around the state the opportunity to see the best and brightest from Arkansas and around the world. This year’s festival was highlighted by feature length narratives with colorful characters and short films with an international flavor. Documentaries were also well represented at the festival and ranged in topics from the war in Iraq to world championship boxing. Participating in the LRFF gives AETN an opportunity to support, educate and celebrate Arkansas filmmakers. This is the third year AETN has presented “Student Selects” at the festival; a series of workshops and screenings for young Arkansas filmmakers. Over the course of the festival weekend, AETN’s Student Selects offered students the opportunity to interact with industry professionals and filmmakers from around the world.

This year, the partnership has extended beyond the festival as AETN will air highlights from the festival in a one night broadcast event. These films

represent the best of the fest and a chance to taste of the scope and flavor of the Little Rock Film Festival for those who couldn’t attend.

The Little Rock Film Festival is an annual event taking place each May in Down-town Little Rock Arkansas. Based in the

historic River Market District, the festival showcases the best in Narrative and Docu-mentary Films from around the World,

and promotes Arkansas filmmakers through a dedicated program.

Giving Through Your Will or Living Trust

We always think about our legacy being our family that continues on after us. But your legacy can also include charitable organizations whose work you want to ensure continues on for the benefit of your family, your community and even your state.

Creating or updating your will or living trust can be a wonderful way to provide gifts that support the future of public broadcasting in Arkansas, in addition to filling an important role in providing for your family and others. It can be gratifying indeed to know that a portion of your property will ensure AETN’s ability to provide quality programs and services for future generations after you no longer need it.

A gift made by will or living trust can be simple to arrange. A provision or amendment prepared by your attorney at the time you make or update your will or trust is all that is necessary. Gifts by wills and living trusts are popular because they are

easy to arrange and may be changed at any time you choose.

With a will or trust you can Give the remainder, or residue, of your estate after all •other gifts have been made; Designate a percentage of your estate; •Leave a specific dollar amount; •Make a gift of a specific property (real estate, stocks, •etc.); or Arrange a trust to provide income to a loved one with a •gift to charitable interests after that’s person’s lifetime or a set time period.

To plan a bequest to the AETN Foundation in support of AETN’s mission, inform your attorney of your wishes and they can advise you regarding the best form for your gift.

Please also contact Karen Cooper, AETN Foundation, at 1-800-662-2386 or [email protected], who will be happy to work with you and your advisor on the specifics of your gift.
