Around this time 2 yearsago I wrote a review for LiamGallagher’s first solo effort,“As You Were”, and lovedthe album so much that Ipicked it as the best albumof 2017-bar none; I still feelthat way, so when I heardabout thisyear’s follow-up release(“Why Me?Why Not”) Iwas onboardimmediately.Of course, everyone andtheir dogknows Liamwas thefrontman for the bandOasis, and did put out 2albums with his band BeadyEye-but this is all Liam, andit is a spectacular effort. The album kicks off in highgear with the jangly guitarintro to “Shockwave”-andit’s Oasis all over again. And speaking of Oasis, thesong “One Of Us” soundslike Liam’s open invitationto brother Noel to pick upthe olive branch, and getback to being part of theduo that defined the 1990’sBrit sound. The most Oasis-like song here is definitely“The River”, a number thattells youth to wake up, grabthe system by the throat
and make it change. Liam, and Oasis were alwaysknown for anthem-likenumbers-and here it’s “BeStill” and “Halo” that rockout with their (blank) out.“Alright Now” and “Once”really remind me of songs Ican imagine PaulMcCartney singing, ditto for“Now That I’ve Found You”(about Liam meeting his 20year old daughter for the
first time).Both aregreat tracks.“Gone” hasan almostJames Bondtheme- l i kevibe to it,a n d“Meadow” isas pastoralas you’llever hear
Liam get-and again there’sa slight tinge of the Beatlessound on this song. Thedeluxe version of thisalbum includes someamazing tracks; “InvisibleSun” is a bombastic, fantastic number,“Misunderstood” and thedemo version of “Once”are acoustic joys and thesong “Glimmer” soundslike an intro song to a1970’s sitcom (but in areally good way). I willadmit that I liked Liam’slast album a bit more thanthis one-but one’s first soloalbum is always going tobe special. This is a greatfollow-up though.
