opened for a long time on Tuesday morning, the neighbours investigated and found Sugumar lying dead on a chair.

Tips for Glowing Skin

Diwali is just around the corner and every

woman wants to look her best. Try these tips

to getting beautiful glowing skin well in

time.

CleansingLeave your regular

cleansing routine aside for a few days. As a Diwali special, swap your cleansing milk for rose water, honey, tur-meric, sandalwood paste, or even saffron face wash to boast glowing skin naturally.

Home sauna: A few days before Diwali, open up and clean

your pores with steam. Pour boiling water in a large vessel and add a few drops of an essential oil. Cover your head with a thick towel and let the steam wash over your face for clean and beautiful skin. This is one of the easiest home tips for glowing skin.

Scrub: Ransack your kitchen or look for an organic scrub in the market. Gently mas-sage your skin with the scrub and let the fresh skin lying hidden underneath come to the surface.

Face pack: Use a face pack to renew your facial skin. You can look for ingredients in your kitchen for an all-organ-ic, chemical-free face pack. Here are a few face packs that you can try.

Banana honey face pack for extra dry skin: Don’t throw away overripe bananas. Mash them up, add some honey and apply the mix on your face and neck for super soft skin. Wash off after 15 mins.

Tomato and honey pack for normal and combination skin: Mash up one tomato and mix with a spoonful of honey. Apply all over your face and wash away after 15 mins for soft, smooth skin.

Tomato and lemon juice for oily skin: Tomato and lemon together fight oiliness and act as a natural bleaching agent. Mash up one tomato and add a few drops of lemon juice. Apply on your face and wash off after 15 mins.

A few years ago, the popular Mangal Eri park was encroached by private bodies and it was a place where debris was dumped and the pond in the park was about to be closed, recalls Rajappan, advisor of the Mangal Eri Walkers Association. “Now we are happy to see that the pond is getting a new lease of life. It has got de-silted and deepened upto two meters. The retaining wall is also being constructed and the bund has been strength-ened,” says Rajappan.

He recalls how it was a struggle for a group of people who had deter-mined to get the park back for the use of the public. “We all wanted it back and as members of the Exnora we did our best to achieve our goal. We followed it up consistently and the then District Collector and the Ambattur Municipal-

ity Commissioner helped us a lot and because of their efforts now we all enjoy the breeze and the proximity of the water body,” he reminisces.

“I have been watching how the park has been beautified gradually. We

started getting all the fa-cilities one by one. The fi-nal work is the strengthen-ing of the bund and the retaining wall. The sur-rounding rain water should be directed towards the pond. It will be really good that the ground wa-

ter in and around the area will get recharged. People staying nearby will get the benefit of this. Flooding can also be avoided once the excess rain water starts coming into the pond,” says Rajappan.

GK Babu, Assitant En-

gineer, Chennai Corpora-tion, says “The work is in progress. The retaining wall will definitely result in multiple benefits to the people. It will take a few months to complete the work.”

Abdullah, a regular visitor to the park says, “Congested houses in the city always made us yearn for a space like this. Every day evening I visit this park. I always enjoy being here just to get the nice breeze from the pond. Earlier it used to be scary because there was no wall around the pond. I thought it would be highly risky for the kids who play very much near the bund. Now we can also go near the pond to enjoy its cool breeze.”

On Saturday as crores of people in the country cele-

brate Deepavali, the festi-val of lights, one group of uniformed personnel will be on alert to ensure that the festive spirit is not dampened – the Fire and Rescue Services Depart-ment staff. Every year during Deepavali, they are on guard and at the beck and call of the public in case of any fire-related emergencies.

When Mogappair Mail visited the Fire and Rescue station at Mogappair East, the station officer S Rajen-dran welcomed us with a smile saying, “For others Deepavali means enjoy-ment, for us it is responsi-bility. We will be highly cautious so that we can save many lives.”

Rajendran says he would urge elders in the family to supervise kids when they light crackers. “We also give tips like when they meet with a fire accident they should lie down immediately and blankets can be used to cover them. We are not supposed to apply tur-meric or any other oint-ment without consulting doctors. We can pour wa-ter on the affected area and should meet the doc-

tor immediately,” he ex-plains.

The Mogappair Fire Station is also conducting awareness programmes among the children to have a safe Deepavali. “One such programme was con-ducted in Velammal Ma-triculation School on Thursday. We did some demonstrations on to show how one can minimise the damage at the time of fire accidents and also taught children to handle crackers in a better way. We also addressed the students from different schools in the area during their as-sembly session,” says Ra-jendran.

When asked about the precautionary steps they have taken, he said, “One fire engine is kept ready all the time and one more has been brought in and kept ready at Thirumangalam. At the time of emergency we get help from all Fire stations in and around the neighbourhood. People can call the toll free num-ber 101 to seek our servic-es. From the control room we get messages through the speaker kept in the sta-tion. The moment we get an audio alert the driver will start the fire engine instantly.”

He also recalls how they doused fire in a commer-cial complex at Anna

Diwali is the time for fun and festivity. Regardless of age, anyone from six year old to sixty year old enjoy bursting crackers and having their favourite sweets on Diwali. Still one does hear of a lot of ac-cidents related to Diwali crackers in the newspaper and TV news channels. Most of these unfortu-nate accidents can be prevented by following these basic tips. Do’s u Make sure you buy Fireworks from a licensed shop.u Always keep the fireworks in a closed box.u Store crackers away from sourc-es of fire or ignition; also keep them away from the reach of toddlers.u Read the instructions and follow all safety precautions instructed with regard to the use of fireworks.u Burst crackers in open spaces like playgrounds and fields.u While lighting the crackers, stand at an arm’s length, away from the Cracker.u Discard used fireworks in a bucket of water this way you can avoid people from stepping on them and hurting their feet from used fireworks which are thrown on the ground.u Keep buckets of water and blan-kets ready, in case a fire breaks out.u Wear thick cotton clothes while

bursting crackers, so as to ensure maximum safety from fire.u While igniting Diwali aerial fireworks like rockets, ensure that they are not facing any opening like a window, door or an open building gate. If the rockets zoom into them, it may cause fire accidents.u Wear footwear while lighting Diwali fireworks.u Light only one firework at a time and one person should do it. Others should watch from a safe distance.u Put your vehicles in a garage.

Don’ts u Don’t burn crackers in crowded, congested places, narrow lanes, near sources of fire or inside the house.u Don’t let children burst crackers unaccompanied by an adult. Keep an eye on them constantly.u Don’t put fireworks in your pocket. Careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths in North America.u Don’t dare to examine un-burst crackers.. leave it!! Light a new cracker.u Don’t show the Dare-devilry of lighting crackers on own hands. One tends to light bombs, by bring-ing them close to the candle or in-cense, rather than bringing the in-cense close to the bomb. Avoid

doing such feats, as there are chances of the firework falling on someone passing by.u Avoid long loose clothes, as they are fast in catching fire.u Strictly avoid using matches and lighters for bursting crackers for Diwali as they have open flames that can be dangerous.u Never ignite aerial fireworks (like rockets) if there is any overhead obstruction present like trees and wires.u Never ever leave a lit match, agarbatti (incense stick) or sparkler near unused crackers.u Never experiment with crackers or make your own fireworks.u Avoid bursting crackers on the roads-it could cause a major road accident.u Never ever light a cracker while holding it in your hand. See to it that you put it down and then ignite it.u Don’t keep your face close to the cracker while trying to light it.u Do not throw fireworks at peo-ple.u Never give any firework item to small children.u When crackers take time or do not ignite immediately, do not keep in trying to burst them. Move away immediately. Throw some water to diffuse them.

For more than three years now the plat-form covering the

storm water drain on Pari Road in Mogappair East has remained broken. This has caused concern among residents who say that though they have com-plained about the open drains nothing has been done to rectify it.

“The storm water canal has been kept open for several years. It poses risks to us. Our houses get con-nected to the road through the platform. Near our en-

trance gate we have made some arrangements to cover the drain but either sides are left open. We are not able to send our chil-dren to walk near the gate fearing that they may slip and fall inside the drain,” says Maheshwari, a resi-dent of Pari Road.

Rajendran, who works in a binding shop on the road says, “The customers who come to us have to be extremely cautious. Espe-cially when we do not have proper eye sight, it will be difficult to notice the bro-ken drain. I remember an incident when an old man

slipped into it and got hurt. The canal is very much at-tached to the house and during rainy seasons water gets accumulated and it becomes the breeding ground for mosquitoes. We also find it difficult to park our vehicles. Had we got the covered platforms we will park our vehicles on it but now we have no option other than parking it on the Main Road.”

There are several com-mercial outlets on the stretch and they have cov-ered the canal on their own and even a few house own-ers did the same. “But my

question is why should we do it? Even when the Cor-poration laid the road, they left this portion open. All the plastic covers thrown on the road get ac-cumulated here and some-times it is filled with de-bris,” laments Rajendran. Even pedestrians find it very difficult to walk here. “This is supposed to be one of the busiest roads with lots of buses, mini buses and share autos ply-ing every now and then. The very purpose of allot-ting a space for pedestrians to walk has got defeated here,” he adds.

Residents of Mogappair East who come back home late after work or watching a film at a night show might have come across a woman selling flowers past midnight daily near the Fire and Rescue Services Station on the end of Va-layapathi Street. Sitting a stone throw away from the V3 Police Station, she waits for the elusive cus-tomer to buy a string of flowers at that unearthly hour.

But who ventures to buy flowers at that odd time? And if not many actually buy it why would the ven-dor sit there missing her

sleep? Mogappair Mail asked the vendor, Laksh-mi, and learnt that she was selling flowers at dusk to escape from the dark reali-ties of life.

“My husband is a paint-er and most of the time he will be in an inebriated condition. If I go home early we will end up pick-ing quarrels with each other. It’s difficult to face him. Just to avoid that I prefer staying back sitting on this platform vending my flowers. I may get an odd customer. Business is not great though,” she said.

One look at Lakshmi and it would not take a seer to conclude that she is im-poverished physically and

emotionally. “I have two kids who are studying in a government school. I have to take care of their needs. I need to pay Rs 5,000 as rent for my house. These days I am not getting any-thing out of this flower selling. Seven years ago the situation was entirely dif-ferent and I was able to make money out of this work but these days many people are selling flowers and they do door delivery and I am clue less on how I can improve my busi-ness,” she said.

“I tried my hands at sell-ing fruits also but for that too we need to invest at least Rs 1,500 per day. Hunger is the major dis-

ease I have now,” said Lakshmi poignantly. “I do not know the ways to come out of it. Whenever I feel hungry I will just divert my mind then I will not know how that appetite vanishes. I stay here even till one in the night just to wait for a customer to come and get flowers from me,” she added.

Lakshmi lamented that even some people who are well off have started selling flowers just to earn addi-tional money. “For them it is a part time business. Since many persons started venturing into this business I do not know how to cope with it,” concluded the midnight flower vendor.

In an age where a cross-section of youngsters is fascinated over English and

drifting away from their moth-er tongue, the Ambattur Kam-ban Kazhagam a registered literary organisation which has been functioning for the past eight years is extensively train-ing the youngsters to develop a flair for Tamil literature as well. The organisation focuses on the extraordinary contributions of the ancient writer Kambar, who penned the popular Kam-ba Ramayanam, the Tamil version of the epic Ramayana.

Pallathur P Pazhaniappan, president of the organisation says, “We conduct monthly meetings in which a youngster is given opportunity to give a talk on any aspect of Kamba Ramayanam. We were aston-ished to know how well they are prepared and articulate on stage. We also give the Tamil Sudar award to a Tamil Scholar. We do conduct quiz on Kamba Ramayanam before the event starts.”

The program is being held every fourth Saturday of a month at Thirumal Marriage Hall, Ambattur, and they are waiting to celebrate the parent Kamban Kazhagam’s cente-nary programme in another eight months time. “Whenever we see people only above 40 years participate in all our pro-grammes, of course it bothered us a lot. That’s why we started roping in youngsters wherever it is possible. We approached Soka Ikeda College of Arts and Science at Madhanangkuppam through one of our committee

members Kanmani Subrama-nian who works in the college. The college has undergraduate as well as post graduate depart-ments in Tamil. We introduced a certificate programme for them on Kamba Ramayanam. We got good response from the students. We do conduct class-es regularly for them,” says Pazhaniappan.

They also conduct classes for general public every Wednesday from 6.30 pm to 8 pm and also conduct “Patti-manram Payilarangam” for youngsters to equip their debat-ing skills on the last Sunday of each month between 4 pm and 6 pm. Kaliyan Sampath, Pro-fessor from University of Ma-dras has been handling the sessions.

Pazhaniappan, who worked in Bank of Baroda got volun-tary retirement and started writing explanation in simple Tamil for the verses of Kamba Ramayanam. It took eight years for him to complete the task and he published the same using his retirement money after consulting his three chil-dren. “When I started reading Kamba Ramayan verses I was not able to understand any-thing. Then I started reading the explanations given by vari-ous scholars then I thought of simplifying everything to make even common man under-stand,” he adds.

The organisation has invit-ed many eminent personalities in the Tamil world such as Sudha Seshaiyan, Thirupur Krishnan, Bharathi Bhaskar, Poet Vali, Silamboli Sellap-pan, Sughi Sivam and Parveen Sulthana.

Weeks after Mogappair Mail reported about the bad roads in Thiruvalleeswarar Nagar off Thirumangalam-Ambattur Es-tate Road, the Corporation of Chennai finally swung into ac-tion and laid the roads in the locality. But the local residents, who are happy with the new roads, have other added woes now.

The absence of street lights and pedestrian footpaths on the stretch is causing concern for those in the neighbourhood. “We got the road laid out after seven years of struggle. Now we don’t have our usual woes of punctured tyres or skidding. Even two speed breakers have come up to regulate the speed of vehicles which otherwise would zip through in this new road. But our new concern is that we are unable to walk on this stretch,” complains Jaffarul-lah, a security guard at an ATM of a private bank in the locality.

“This busy road witness heavy vehicle traffic on a daily basis, but it is worrying that there is no space for pedestrians

to walk on one side of the road. Now we face the risk of being knocked down by a speeding car or scooter,” complains Subha, a resident of the Thiruval-leeswarar Nagar.

“Another major problem here is the absence of adequate street lights. At the entrance of the road there is a temple which has powerful lights. That alone gives us some visibility at night. We find it very difficult in the eve-nings. Almost 50 per cent of the road is not covered by street lights and there is not adequate lighting,” says Logeshwari, a

make shift shop keeper who sells soups in the evenings.

Jaffarullah says, “It is dark in the evening. After 10 pm the temple lights will be switched off then the street becomes pitch dark. I am here in the ATM centre, these days lootings are happening in the ATM centres too. The darkness reduces my confidence. I am really scared on how do people cross this road safely after taking money from the ATM. When other roads are getting LED lights why is that this road alone should be left unattended?
