Two arrested for running hookah bar
Police arrested two per-sons for running a hookah bar in a house in Anna Nagar on Thursday, seized nine glass hookahs with stainless steel pumps, 12 smoking pipes, three clay pots and 13 flavoured to-bacco plastic containers
from the suspects. The fa-cility was located in Brew and Blow restaurant at AC Block in Anna Nagar where the police team con-ducted a raid there on Thursday. They identified the accused as P Ashok Kumar from Royapettah and K Manmadhan from Usilampatti. Some cash was also seized. Police said that a case was registered and both were remanded in judicial custody.
Over 20,000 runners are expected to take part in Forum Purple Run, a mar-athon organised by Forum Vijaya Mall, Chennai, on Sept 30. The run is the mall’s signature campaign that will throw light on Alzheimer’s in line with World Alzheimer’s Day. The runners will run across multiple venues in Chen-nai, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Udaipur, Hyderabad and Mangalore. The marathon will be flagged off from all the six forum malls across the six cities.
The marathon aims at beating the stigma attached to Alzheimer’s as most cases in the country go undiagnosed, the release said.
The competitive half
marathon includes mini and micro marathons for trained athletes, families and children The race cat-egories are 21km, 10km, and 3km. The run is free for children below the age 12 and veterans above 55 years.

Slush leaves this stretch of road unusable

The woes of motorists using the Church Road, an important connect way between Mogappair East and the Maduravoyal New Bridge, is far from over. Just as motorists were getting used to the bumpy ride on the road that was frequently dug up in the last many
months and not re-laid properly, now one stretch of this crucial road is filled with slush creating a fresh logjam for vehicle users.
As motorists turn into Church Road from the Maduravoyal New Bridge end, they encounter an unusable slush-filled road on the left side. The slush, ostensibly left behind by
movement by earthmov-ers which are operated for a canal desilting-cum-re-laying work nearby is seen for about 100 metres. Due to this, the right side of the Church Road at this stretch has been tempo-rarily converted into a two-way vehicular move-ment path, causing traffic snarls and delay for road users.

“There is no signage put up anywhere in the vicinity to indicate to road users who are coming from the Madu-ravoyal New Bridge that one side of this road is in an unus-able condition,” pointed out Ravikumar, who works in a small eatery located nearby. “Many car drivers notice the slush on the left side of the road only when they are about to take a turn onto Church Road to proceed to-wards Mogappair East bus depot, Eri Scheme and Gold-en Flats. They are forced to make last minute gear change and turn on the right side of the road,” he said.
Locals complained that such kind of civic works are being undertaken on this busy road on and off for
many months now causing hardship to drivers of vehi-cles. “There is no synchroni-sation between various civic agencies to ensure that the all works are completed in sync so that the people do not suffer from unusable roads frequently,” said Hari, a resident of Mogappair East, who takes the Church Road on a routine basis to proceed on the Poonamallee High Road.
“Now the other worry for all of us is as to whether the slush will be removed from the road and if so when. Also, once the slush is re-moved, the tar road needs to be re-laid so that motorists could have a smooth riding experience,” said Kavish, another resident of the area.

Good enough to head to the theatres
U-Turn is a Tamil remake of its Kannada namesake, which was also directed by Pawan Kumar. This helps the movie at various places, as the director certainly knows the essence of the original. This Samantha starrer is the story of a reporter who is writing a story on the ac-cidents that happen on a particular flyover. However, that leads her into big trouble. Whether she is able to come out of it or not forms the crux of the story.
Samantha has made a string of good sign-ings post-marriage and this one too follows
suit. She plays a terrific Rachana and is ably supported by Aadhi Pini-setty and other supporting char-acters.
The film is technically strong, thanks to Niketh Bom-mi’s visuals and music by Poorna Chandra Tejaswi. The music lifts the film several notches higher than what it is supposed to be. These technicalities set this thriller apart from the others. At various junctures, the film might make you feel like you understand everything, and yet, the director is always one
step ahead of you.U-Turn has a crispy run
time of just over 2 hours and manages to keep you fairly engaged. However, the direc-
tor seems to be in a rush to end the film, and it takes a lot of tropes that you may see in a usual thriller. By the time the major twist is unveiled, we have a slight idea of what it is. The bland
interval block too, doesn’ t ra i se much
curiosity, which is a very impor-tant element for a film of this genre.

Sivakarthikeyan, Soori, and director Ponram have already delivered two Su-per hit films in the form of Varuthapadatha Vaalibar Sangam and Rajini Muru-gan, and the combination has returned back for the third time with Seemaraja, which has hit the screens on Friday. The film has an interesting star cast that also includes Samantha,
Simran, Napoleon, Lal, and others.
The film primarily deals with the tussle between two royal families from two dif-ferent villages, Singampatti
and Puliyampatti. This tussle affects the life of Seemaraja (Sivakarthikey-an), his love interest Selvi (Samantha), and the inno-cent farmers of the village. How Seemaraja overcomes all these problems and de-fends the antagonists, forms the rest of the plot.
Sivakarthikeyan’s screen presence is a major trump card for Seemaraja and he holds the audience with his casual performance. His character makeover in the historical portions repre-sent the entire team’s hard
work and SK stands tall as the King Kadambavel. Soori makes a good impres-sion with his one-liners that make the audience laugh out. His six pack scene gets elevated well with a sur-prise theme score, but the audience gets to see that only for a very limited time frame. Comedy is one of the major highlights in a Ponram film and he has delivered it again, but how-ever, there are few cliched template comedies that do not work at places.
Samantha delivers a
neat job and her chemistry with SK looks fresh on the big screen. Not to miss, her excellent Silambam skills, that has a special surprise in the climax. Simran show-cases the evilness just with her eyes and her addition in the cast is indeed a valuable one. However, the director could have utilised the actor inside her to a larger extent. Keerthy gets to score with some intense dialogues through her interesting cameo. Napoleon and Lal bring out their expertise with the given roles.

Founded in 1818, Wesley Higher Secondary School is celebrating its 200th An-
niversary and a Curtain Raiser programme was held at the school campus on Saturday, Sep 8. Over 700 persons including past and present students and parents at-tended the programme which also included a Students’ Reunion.
The programme commenced with a prayer song, followed by the
lighting of the kuthuvillaku by retired teacher Kalyanasundaram and a representative of the Wesley Alumni Association (WAA). Sam-son Manuel, President of the WAA welcomed.
The School’s new logo was unveiled by Aaron David, 93, the oldest living alumnus of the school who belonged to 1932-41 batch. Actor ChinniJayanth, another former student of Wesley enter-
tained the crowd by singing a peppy film song.
Many old students who had brought laurels to the school were honoured. The first was V. Bas-karan, Captain of the Gold win-ning Hockey Team of the 1980 Moscow Olympics and also for-mer UNICEF Ambassador for Children. As he made his entry into the auditorium, ten students on either side of the aisle held up locked hockey sticks in a ceremo-nial salute and as he walked down the aisle to the accompaniment of the Olympic anthem, he was showered with rose petals. On reaching the stage, he unveiled the display of his Olympic Gold medal as well as the Olympic Bronze medals won by another former student, P. Krishnamurthy. After this, Director P. Vasu came on to the stage.
Other past students like Dr. K. Selvakumar, Neurologist at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre, Col. (Retd) Warrier and Dr.
Hisammudin Papa of HUMA Hospital were also honoured.
Officials of the school who participated in the event included Rev Fr. Lourdusami Susai, Secre-tary Meston Education & Devel-opment Association (MEDA) and Correspondent of the School, and Maj. ES Daniel Gunanithi I.A.S, President of MEDA.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dipson Roy, Headmaster of the school.

After many months of risking of lives and limbs, motorists and cy-clists now can safely take a sharp right turn at the beginning of Mogappair Eri Scheme Fourth Main Road as a broken retention
wall along a canal has finally been repaired.
In December last year, Mogap-pair Mail had highlighted the con-cerns of the local residents over a portion of the retention wall col-lapsing along the water body just opposite to Westminster Apart-ments. Residents had back then complained that the portion of the retention wall had given way months ago and there was no sign of any government agency even bothering to take steps to rebuild
the same.“The broken portion of the re-
tention wall has finally been re-paired and constructed. This hap-pened recently as part of a larger exercise to clean up and maintain the water bodies in the neighbour-hood. We are extremely happy over this development. Previously mo-torist faced the risk of accidentally breaching and falling into the canal especially at night when visibility was poor. During power cuts, we used to be worried if anyone would
accidentally fall into it,” recalled Swaminathan, who was among those instrumental in highlighting their concerns about the civic issue to this correspondent about nine months ago.
Inquiries with workers engaged by a contractor, who has bagged the tender to execute civic projects, re-vealed that canals and water chan-nels located in various parts of Mogappair East, Mogappair West and Nolambur are being cleaned up as part of a major drive.

It appears that pedestri-ans would never be able to win the battle
with encroachers to get back their rightful space for walking in the neigh-bourhoods of Anna Nagar and Mogappair. Newer encroachments kee p springing up on the foot-paths in many parts of the neighbourhood every now and then and authorities concerned are doing pre-cious little to clear them and encourage people to walk.
While it is common to find small vendors on the sidewalks of Mogappair, Collector Nagar, Thiru-mangalam and Anna Nagar – as is the case in the rest of the Chennai
metropolitan city – what comes as a challenge to pedestrians are the larger commercial encroach-ments. "We can under-s tand s t reet vendors spreading their wares on a part of the platforms to eke out a living. They don't eat up the entire space but leave some room for the people to walk. However, in recent times I am finding other major encroachments which is causing concern," said Boopathy, a resident of Collector Nagar.
Residents of Shanthi Colony in Anna Nagar were recently taken aback to see a pile of bricks being stacked on the platform close to the 11th Main Road. "Construction ac-tivity on a multi-storied

building is going on near the 11th Main Road. Ini-tially we thought these bricks could have been offloaded on the platform for use by the builder. However, what came as a surprise was a small board placed atop the pile of bricks which reads ‘Bricks QC-Tested'. This has made us wonder if these bricks have been placed for a commercial purpose," said Sarveshwar, a resident of an apartment in Shanthi Colony.
"How could someone occupy the footpath to display bricks? Where would pedestrians walk? This is simply unaccept-able and I think such en-croachments spring up only because we choose not to protest or complain. But people are too occu-pied with their own chores and work that they don't take time to lodge a com-plaint or protest against the encroacher on the platforms," said Krupa, another resident of the Anna Nagar neighbour-hood.
"Irrespective of whether these bricks have been placed for sale or for con-struction activity, they have to be removed. Any builder
has to keep construction materials within the prem-ises and not use platforms to spread them out. This is what the rule says as well," added Krupa.
Every household generates waste or garbage, but should be taught the right way to dispose it. It is a known fact that throwing garbage all over the place will not only dirty the surroundings but pollute the environment, making it very unhygienic and also causes bad odour. To stop this habit, a few residents of Valayapathy Salai stuck upon a novel idea. Flexi boards with pictures of great leaders and religious interests were put up on the walls and this strategy worked. However only to a certain extent for this part of the road became clean only for garbage to get
dumped at a different place, few metres away on the same road. With so much talk about cleaner India, it's high time the residents act with some responsibility.
