Understanding/Evaluating

Students will complete two essays, one on each artist exploring two paintings. These essays will include sketches of the paintings with labels and arrows to important aspects. This will help students to remember important details and make revision of this topic easier.

Students will fill out a quick questionnaire towards the end of the project where they can state any queries they may have so that we can revisit them in class.

Students will analyze each painting they are introduced to on their own before class discussion. They will each answer a sheet of broad questions which we will correct together as a class.

ICT: I will use power point presentations to introduce students to

Impressionism. I will use Prezzi to zoom in on important elements within the paintings

and analyze them in more detail. I will use YouTube clips to further investigate the Impressionist period.

Key words/phrases:

Impressionism, light, every day, technique, style, Manet, Monet, Renoir, subject matter, composition, Paris, essence, natural, glimpse, outdoor, society.

Teaching/Learning Strategies:

I will use informative YouTube clips to give a brief background to the Impressionist era.

I will use Prezzi to move around and enlarge images to initiate class discussion and encourage students to investigate the paintings in more detail.

I will use PowerPoint presentations to illustrate images and give information on particular pieces.

Visual aids of the paintings discussed will be given to students so that as well as having it on PowerPoint they also have their own copy.

We will use word association in class to describe the works and students will be given handouts outlining important words and phrases and their meanings which they must become familiar with in order to achieve a good standard of literacy in their essays on Impressionism.

I will assign students two essays which I will correct and hand back with detailed feedback on where they could improve. I will discuss how students will structure their essays with headings such as introduction and background, style and technique, subject matter, background of artist and conclusion. Students will use illustrations throughout their essays also.

I will give students a copy of past exam questions on Impressionism and discuss with them how they might adapt their knowledge to various questions.

Materials:Folder, hardback, visual aids, handouts, projector, interactive white board.

Differentiation:This scheme is adaptable to students of different levels as there is a mixture of pass and honors in the class. Students who struggle with literacy will be aided with handouts which suggest a possible format for their essay with helpful headings. The word association sheet which will be handed out will also help students with poor literacy.
