G.RAMANATHAN - 4As the new decade -1940s - dawned, G. Ramanathan made

a mark with the hit of the year ‘Uthamaputhran’, directed andproduced by the Salem-based Indian movie mogul T.R.Sundaram of Modern Theatres Limited. It was a successfulrehash of the Hollywood hit film of 1939, ‘The Man in the IronMask’.

The French novelist Alexander Dumas was a prolific writerof historic adventure and this novel became very successfulandfound its way to Hollywood. It was made more than half a dozentimes under different titles with different casts and direction.Later it was also made as a TV series in Japanwhich was alsoa hit.

Sundaram made the first Tamil version of the story in whichhe introduced a new feature for the first time in the history ofTamil Cinema - the dual role. P. U. Chinnappa, the singing starof the 1940s, was Sundaram’s discovery and was cast by himin the role of the twins. Even though Chinnappa had acted ina few films earlier, it was this filmwhich placed him firmly onthe ladder of fame and success. This feature per se was one ofthe main causes of the success of this filmbecause moviegoerswondered how two similar looking men could talk to each otherand, what was more interesting, indulge in sword fights!

This film had, besides Chinnappa, T. S. Balaiahas thevillainand the singing star of Karnataka, M.V. Rajamma, asthe heroine.

The music composer G. Ramanathan created a fine impres-sion on the Salem movie mogul not only with his musical talentsand acquired skills but also with his disciplined methods of work, pleasing manners and such other factors. Not surprisingly,Sundaram employed Ramanathan to compose music for quitea few of his later films and also gave him roles to play.

Like most Tamil movie music composers of the day,Ramanathan too did not bother about copyright laws and madeuse of popular Hindi film tunes for the songs in this film.Interestingly the song-book mentions details of the Hindi filmsongs which were adapted by Ramanathan.

That was not all. That was the period when the songs of therebel poet Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar were bannedby the British government and he had moved to Pondicherrywhich was then part of French India. One of his famous songs,‘Senthamizh nadennum pothinely inba then vandhu payudhukaathiniley’, was used in this film unmindful of British Indiangovernment’s ban. Chinnappa sangit as a ragamalikawhichbecame popular. In small towns moviegoers cheered this songloudly and some saw the film repeatedly mainly for this song.

Ramanathan also made use of Classical Carnatic Music andcomposed songs in ragas like Kedharagowla, MohanamBehagand others in the ragamalika song

Besides Chinnappa, this film had Balaiah as the villain.Interestingly, the cover page of the song-book of this film hasonlythe photograph of Balaiah, Rajamma, N. S Krishnan andT. A. Mathuram but not of Chinnappa, the possible reasonbeingthat he was not yet a star which he became with thesuccess of this movie.

Others in the cast included K. K. Perumal, C.V.V.Panthulu,T. S. Krishnaveni, Sandow Natesan, U. R Jeevaratnam in asupporting role, S.S. Kokko , Kali N. Ratnam, C.T. Rajakantham,P.R. Mangalam, and P. A. Periyanayaki. later a top off-screensinger who also played a supporting role in movies.

S. Velsamy Kavi wrote the lyrics while the dialogues were byD.V. Chari, a close associate of the Modern Theatres boss.

There were comic songs rendered by Kali N. Ratnam and C.T.Rajakantham, N.S. Krishnan and T.A. Mathuram, ‘Buffoon’Shanmugam andC.R. Kamala. In such songs, names of thecommunities to which the characters belong were mentionedwhich today would be deleted from the film. Those were the dayswhen the British Indian government did not bother about suchreferences to caste and community

Ramanathan’s music came in for praise and paved the wayfor him to go places, which he did soon!

LETTERS TO THEEDITOR

Parking woes on Abdul Azeez Street

Sir, I reside at 26, Abdul Azeez Street, T.Nagar. Nowadays, the road margin on eitherside of the street is occupied by parked ve-hicles thereby narrowing the road width.

While most of them park the cars in front oftheir houses, some residents with more thanone car park their vehicles outside other resi-dents’ compound.

Likewise, a nearby resident has perma-nently parked his car along the road marginin front of my house and refuses to remove iteven when I need that space. I have alsoposted a complaint in the Facebook page ofChennai Traffic Police a week back. The car isstill there.

Will the concerned authorities look intothis matter and take suitable action?— K.Raman, 26, Abdul Azeez Street, T. Nagar

Pedestrian subway a must at accident-prone Burkit Road-Usman Road

junctionSir, In the Mambalam Times issue dated

April 19-25, there was a news item about thedeath of a senior citizen at the Burkit Road-Usman Road junction caused by a speedingMTC bus.

There are frequent accidents at the junc-tion because of the lack of safety measures forpedestrians.

At the centre of the junction, though thereis a signal, it caters only to the vehicles andthere is no zebra crossing. The pedestriansare forced to exercise extreme caution as theyhave to cross based on the direction the ve-hicles are plying.

Added to the woes, the road margins arefurther blocked by parked share autos andMTC buses.

To ease the life of pedestrians I recommendconstructing a subway at the junction. – V.S.Jayaraman, 31 Motilal Street, T. Nagar
