NOTAThe imminent General Election promises to the honest

citizen, who is a voter, the bonus choice of choosing noneof the uglies who harass the registered voter through thecandidates’ oily guys for his/her “valuable votes” by provid-ing an escape route in the form of a legend named NOTAwhich, expanded, reads “None Of The Above”.

Isn’t our democracy beautiful since no election in anypart of the world gives the elector such freedom not tochoose from the array of goofs who want to take him/herto paradise. It amounts to telling the guys that the para-dise they promise may not be the one that the voter wantsto enter through the ballot box.

I am the monarch of my life as ordained by some forcethat guides us all and no election promise can affect thecourse of my journey through this beautiful life of quiet andpeace and universal love that is my guiding star that hasshone on me for 80 beautiful years, 20 years of which I oweto Anna Nagar Times and its Editor for not balling up mystuff and throwing it in the trash bin.

NOTA, the new election philosophy, will, if not frownedupon by judicial diktat, set free the Indian mind andrevolutionise the elective process as an aid to humanismin all walks of life. Angry Rahul may not get a repeat chanceto shout “nonsense” and similar sweet words at attemptedlegislative imbecility. I think NOTA is our second freedommovement which is our birthright .

LETTERS TO THE EDITORTraffic nightmare nearPSBB School entrance

Sir, Chennai Corporation hadfixed the deadline as August 15for the pavement vendors toshift to the newly built shop-ping complex in Pondy Bazaar(T. Nagar). This was later ex-tended by a month as the ven-dors cited reasons of pendingwork relating to the fitting ofshutters and other structuresin the complex in their allottedspaces.

It must be pointed out thatthe complex was built 2 yearsago and only now after legalwrangles and negotiations withthe vendor union, the deadlinewas fixed and extended.

Now it looks like they havesought time till Deepavali toget into the new complex on theplea that the allocated roomsneed to be made safe and secureto protect their goods.

These excuses are nothingbut delaying tactics employedby the vendors. For, whatsafety and security do theyhave now for their wares whichthey keep on the pavement? All these days, they have car-ried out their business in rainand shine without any protec-tion from the weather. Nowthat they have pucca roomsat the complex, for which theymust remain thankful to thegovernment, they should havemoved into the new complexby this time. They could haveeasily carried out necessarystructural work in the roomsallotted to them at the com-plex even as they conductedtheir business from the newpremises. This is what is nor-

mally done by the shopkee-pers whenever they undertakealterations to their shops.

One does not understandwhy the Corporation remainspliant? Having given the ven-dors a long rope, the Corpora-tion should have taken toughmeasures to make them moveinto the new complex. It re-mains doubtful whether thevendors will ever move at allafter Deepavali.

In the likely event of the ven-dors vacating the pavement, credible measures must be putin place by the civic body toprevent once and for all anyillegal occupation at the va-cated places by a new crop ofvendors/hawkers.

This is most important and ifthe Corporation is unable to dothis, then the efforts to de-con-gest will become meaninglessand futile.

While one has the right to dobusiness, in so exercising suchrights, it should not come inthe way another exercising his/her right.

Had the civic body nippedthe illegal occupation of thepublic places like pavementswhich are meant for the exclu-sive use of the pedestrians, inthe bud itself, it does not haveto build complexes to housethem. Just because a vendorhas been doing business froman illegally occupied place for a long period, neither does itbecome legal nor can he claimas his/her right to do busi-ness.—V. S. Jayaraman, 31Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Corporation should be strict in relocatingpavement vendors

Sir, I am Vasudevan, parentof two school going childrenliving on Alagirisamy Salai (K.K. Nagar).

Even though my house isjust 300 meters from PSBBSchool where my kids study, Ihave a harrowing time daily inwalking them to and fro fromthe school.

Parents with vehicles, pri-vate and school owned vansand autos block off the roadnear the school gate by park-ing the vehicles haphazardlyand making it difficult and un-safe for pedestrians.

The plight is even worse for anumber of senior citizens whocome by walk to drop and pickup their grandchildren study-ing in the school.

The van drivers and eveneducated parents in vehiclesare callous in their attitude andhurl abuses when asked tomove their vehicles.

At least during morninghours, there is a traffic cons-table who tries his best to regu-late the vehicles and make apassage for the walkers.

I request the school and traf-fic authorities to take up thisissue and demarcate an areanear the school gate as a no-vehicle zone during schoolopening and closing hours toease and safeguard the life ofthe pedestrians and students.– S. Vasudevan, AlagirisamySalai, K.K. Nagar, Ph: 9840708344

Sir, With the repair work onthe Kodambakkam Bridgecommencing, the diversion oftraffic via Rangarajapuramflyover began on Sunday, Oc-tober 6.

Even on a Sunday, at arou-nd 8 a.m the traffic came to acrawl on the flyover. ManyMTC buses and other heavyvehicles which used to passthrough Kodambakkam bridgewill now use Rangarajapuramflyover.

One dreads the traffic thatcan clog the bridge on week-

days. With festival days com-ing soon, Bazullah Road resi-dents at one end of the flyoverwill surely have nightmares.

By a simple stroke of work, the authorities can ease thetraffic on Usman Road for T.Nagar users by clearingMambalam High Road of en-croachments and making itfully motorable.

This will make also ease thetraffic on Rangarajapuramflyover. – Sriram, 90,Bazullah Road, T. Nagar; Ph:98407 73410
