Under the Smart CityProject, Chennai Corporationhas developed vertical gardensaround two pillars of G. N.Chetty Road flyover in T.Nagar at a cost of Rs. 32 lakhs.

The cost of developing theflora is about Rs. 750 per sq. ft.

Infrastructure like borewell,pump room, storage sump,water and electricity has beenprovided at additional cost.

According to a Corporationofficial, the vertical garden notonly beautifies the flyover, butalso prevents defacement ofthe pillars by writing of slogansor pasting posters. He saidthat similar gardens will bedeveloped around 6 morepillars. The flyover has 11spans with 20 pillars and twoabutments.

Sir, The ordinary MTC service busesintroduced on routes 11H and 49A do not stopin all stops in K. K. Nagar. Further, conductorsrefuse to issue tickets for the stops where theexpress / deluxe services of 11H and 49A do notstop (for example Padma Seshadri School andPondicherry Guest House), stating that theseare not scheduled stops.

Save as much water as you canSit, The number of households using water

filters has increased substantially.On an average, a 4-member household

consumes about 20 liters of filtered water aday. For every 20 liters filtered, an equal quantityof water goes down the drain as waste.

This waste water from the filter can be usedfor cleaning vessels or even in the cistern. Withlakhs of homes in Chennai using water filters,lakhs of liters of water are wasted daily.

MTC bus runs over schoolboyS. Sai Suriya (11), a resident of P. T. Rajan Salai, K. K. Nagar, who

was riding pillion on a bike, was run over by an MTC bus on KamarajarSalai in Ashok Nagar on April 4 evening.

Police said that the accident occurred when the bus, coming from theopposite direction, hit the handle of the two-wheeler. As Suriya fell, hisleg got stuck in the bike and he could not move. The bus ran over theboy, killing him on the spot. He sustained severe head injuries, policesaid.

The rider, an employee of the medical shop run by his fatherLakshmipathy, escaped unhurt.

Suriya was on his way to attend a tuition class at the time. Suriyawas a Std. 5 student in a private school in Ashok Nagar. Like on mostdays, an employee of the medical shop was riding the two-wheeler.

The 17 D bus (Broadway-K. K. Nagar) had 50 passengers. Thepassengers and passers-by took Surya to a nearby private hospitalwhere he was declared brought dead. Police sent the body for postmortemto Rajiv Gaandhi Government General Hospital.

Guindy traffic police registered a case under IPC Section 304 (A)(causing death due to negligence) against the bus driver and areinvestigating.

Resident provides buttermilk forpassersby

Usha Bothra(resident of VasanStreet, T. Nagar) hasbeen distributingbuttermilk amongthirsty passersbyoutside her residencefrom March 1 for thethird consecutive year.

She said that thebuttermilk is preparedwith 5 liters of curd andgiven to more than 150 persons. She plans to increase the volume inthe coming days.

Usha said that following her husband Goutham Bothra initiative, shebegan her free buttermilk project.

She appealed to residents of other streets to follow her example.She also provides water for birds and animals in at her house.

Arunkumar (24), whomarried recently, killed his wifeSandhya (20) in her parents’house in Nesapakkam on thenight of March 30.

According to the police,Arunkumar and Sandhya wereneighbours and had marriedafter falling in love.

Post marriage there werefrequent fights between themas Arunkumar (an electrician)did not earn enough to keep hiswife happy.

A day before the murder,Sandhya had gone to stay withher parents living close by,following a fight with herhusband.

On March 30, Arunkumarwent to bring Sandhya back.

When she refused, he stabbedher in the abdomen and neck.

Sandhya died on the spot.Arunkumar was arrested by

K. K. Nagar police.

Chennai Metrobegins soil testsin T. Nagar

Chennai Metro has begun soiltests in T. Nagar as part of itsphase 2 project. Its workers wereseen drilling boreholes to collectsoil samples inVenkatanarayana Road.

There will be 5 stations in theneighbourhood, namelyNandanam, Panagal Park,Kodambakkam, MeenakshiCollege and Power House.

Under the Land AcquisitionAct, Tamilnadu Government hasissued notices to a number ofproperty owners on the easternside of Kodambakkam RailwayStation in connection with thedevelopment of the 2nd phase ofthe Metro Rail project in the17.4-km long Corridor 4 (OrangeLine) from Light House to CMBTwith 20 stations.

Nearly 200 property owners,many of whom are seniorcitizens, living in the 9 streetsnear Kodambakkam Station onthe eastern side up toRamakrishna School(Mambalam High Road) havefiled petitions against theacquisition. In the recentmeeting, a committee of theaffected owners was set up totake up the issue with theauthorities concerned.

The committee has also sentan appeal to the Prime Minister.
