CIT Nagar Corporation playground renovation CIT Nagar Corporation playground renovation begins Metro to link route planned under monorail network It is not clear if monorail, one of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s pet projects, will ever see the light of day, but localities like Porur, Iyyapanthangal and Poonamallee, planned under the system, will be linked under the 118.9-km. phase-2 of Chennai Metro Rail Limited. A comprehensive study on passenger flow revealed high traffic density between Porur and Poonamallee that metro rail, not monorail, is capable of handling, said CMRL managing director Pankaj Kumar Bansal. Corridor 4, now planned between Light House and CMBT, will be extended upto Poonamallee and will finally stretch over 26.1 km. with 30 stations. The 118.9- km. phase-2, estimated to cost Rs. 69,000 crores, will comprise corridors 3, 4 and 5. “We presented the traffic data to the state government and suggested that metro rail would be more suitable in these localities than monorail. After the government approval, we revised corridor 4,” Bansal said. Discussions are on with four international banks and construction may begin soon, he added. As of 2012, monorail was to connect Kathipara with Poonamallee linking Porur, SRMC Hospital, Iyyappan- thangal, Kattupakkkam, Kumananchavadi and Karayanchavadi in a ‘Y’ shaped alignment including an arm from Porur to Vadapalani and Velachery to Vandalur. While Kathipara is linked with Alandur in metro phase-1, the rest are part of phase-2. After the government’s approval, an additional detailed project report for corridor 4 retained the stretch between Light House and Vadapalani as per the old plan, but tweaked the route from Vadapalani to link localities from Porur to Poonamallee. Corridor 5 was also changed to include CMBT and Kaliamman Koil Street that were removed from corridor 4. Now, stations have been planned at Alwarthirunagar, Valasar- vakkam, Karabakkam, Alapakkam Junction and Porur junction as interchange facilities linking corridors 4 and 5. A part of corridor 4, initially planned to be underground, has now been changed to elevated. Officials said the line between Light House and Meenakshi College in Kodambakkam will be underground, as it links the city core. From Meenakshi College to Poonamallee it will be elevated. “We decided to change it to elevated as there is availability of space,” an official said. The state government proposed a 42-km two-corridor monorail at an estimated cost of Rs. 6,402 crores and tasked Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to execute it. But the project is yet to take off. Experts had been highlighting that the city would require a mix of metro rail and monorail system to make public transport popular. Tenders floated for flyover at Teynampet junction Chennai Corporation has floated tenders for the 1.2 km. flyover at Teynampet junction connecting Theyagaraya Road and Eldams Road. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 98.55 crores. This is one of the two flyovers proposed under the Smart City mission. The other one will be at Nandanam junction. Though the projects were sanctioned in July 2018, they were not started due to metro rail work. The tenders will be opened on Feb. 27.

Residents appeal against shifting of rationshops from Rameswaram Road

Residents have opposed themove by the Civil SuppliesDept. to shift the ration shopsfunctioning for more than 3decades in Rameswaram Road,T. Nagar to Mambalam HighRoad in T. Nagar. The shopscater to more than 2000 resi-dents living in the vicinity.

The residents toldMambalam Times that theshift was unnecessary as theyhave no complaints against thelocation or the facilities in theshops.

An official of the Civil Sup-plies Dept. said that the shopsare being shifted as the exist-ing building is in bad conditionwith no proper amenities andare unsafe for the staff and forstoring goods.

Refuting the official’s claim,Sooryan Basheer (Advocateand resident of RameswaramRoad) and Badrinarayanan(resident of Doraisamy Road,T. Nagar) said that the newlocation is very far and incon-venient for existing consum-ers, especially women and theelderly.

A senior member of T. Nagar

Residents’ Welfare Associationsaid that the shops are func-tioning out of the premisesowned by TUCS (CooperativeSociety land) and is close to thecard holders mainly residing inthe streets abutting UsmanRoad and other nearby streetsincluding Ramanujam Street,Soundarajan Street andGandhi Street. He said thatthe main reason for the pro-posal to shift is only due tovested interest to accommo-date commercial complex own-ers who run a canteen and hos-tel for their employees inMambalam High Road.

He added that when the resi-dents do not encounter anyproblems and the shops arerunning smoothly, what is theneed to shift them? Shiftingof ration shops cannot be doneat the whims and fancies ofelected repre-sentatives. Re-locating the shops can be doneonly if it has the consent of allthe cardholders.

He concluded by saying thatdespite disapproval from theresidents, if at all the shops arere-located, it will only amountto denial of our rights and wewill have no other option but tosurrender the ration cards.

Appeal to buy productsmade by differently-abledpersonsBy Our Staff Reporter

Arvind Foundation, (NGO located in 387, 27thStreet, Sector 6, K. K. Nagar) sells food items, paper bags, plates and other products made bydifferently-abled persons.

They include 13 varieties of spice mixes likesambar powder, paruppu podi and garam masala, paper bags of different sizes, bowls and platesmade with the leaves of areca nut tree.

The paper plates can be used for all functionsand are priced at Rs. 3.50 each.

With the recent ban on plastics, these serve asan excellent alternative at nominal cost.

A separate outlet for selling these productswill soon open near the Foundation.

According to a special educator in ArvindFoundation, the special children are providedtraining from their formative years. To help themleverage the development, the Foundation has aseparate unit where they are given vocationaltraining after they grow up. Stipend is paid to

Smart City makeover not easyir, Under the Smart City Mission, a few places in T. Nagar are getting a makeover. They include South Usman Road and North Usman Road. But for this to happen, the numerable encroachments have to be removed from these roads

including roadside hawkers. The footpaths on both sides of the service roads of Usman Road, Ranganathan Street and

Railway Border Road are encroached upon. Likewise, most of the large commercial complexeson the roads have been built violating rules including. fire safety norms.

The mushrooming growth of mobile eateries, the dysfunctional storm water drains and theover-burdened Metrowater sewer lines are other worrying factors.

Without addressing these issues, how can the roads be made ‘Smart’?The authorities who are in charge of the Smart City project should take the residents on board

to get a better idea of the problems each street faces. It not, it will be a failed or half-baked mission. K. Harihar, T. Nagar

Assaulted in flat complex staircaseSir, I am a resident of a flat in Postal Colony, West Mambalam. At around 8.30 p.m on Feb. 19, when I was climbing the stairs to reach my flat on the 2nd floor,

I was assaulted by a youth who rushed from behind. I managed to fight back and raised an alarm. He let go of me and raced down the stairs. I gave chase and saw him climb a bike and ride away.

I even hit him on the head with my lunch bag. He was in the late 20s and was wearing a red T-shirt. I think he was a delivery person engaged by a food delivery company.

I am writing this letter to caution the women in our neighbourhood to be cautious and alert.I had nails which actually helped me in the situation, but women should carry stuff like pepperspray to fight back. N. C. Ramya, Postal Colony, West Mambalam

As many of them hailfrom underprivilegedfamilies, the stipend isnot only a value additionto the family income, butalso makes them feelcapable andindependent.
