YKLETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Mobile operators lay cables haphazardlySir, Jio (Mobile network operator) has erected

posts on Thambiah Road Extn., WestMambalam.

One such post outside the gate of my houseis next to the street light post.

Bunches of cables and some heavy equip-ment are hanging from both the posts, which isnot only risky for passersby, but are also aneyesore. Apart from this, numerous cables ofother service providers are also tied to theseposts.

Is there no safe and proper procedure forerecting posts and the connecting cables?

I appeal to the authorities concerned to lookinto my complaint and do the needfulSwarnalatha, West Mambalam, Ph: 9840828848

MTC must not insist on Aadhaar for free couponsSir, The free travel coupon for senior citizens for the period Jan./Feb./March 2019 issued by

MTC, comes up for renewal around Dec. 15.For issue of coupons, MTC demands a copy of both Aadhaar and ration card every time. The Apex Court has passed orders stating that Aadhaar cannot be made mandatory by

banks, telecom units and private entities. So, MTC should also desist from insisting upon theproduction of the Aadhaar and accept ration card alone as proof.

Further, the MTC has issued ID cards to each beneficiary with the details of the couponsrecorded in it to prevent misuse. The ID is renewed every December.

At the time of renewal, the old ID is taken back by MTC, which is a security risk as the IDcarries personal information like address and photo of the beneficiary.

The MTC should therefore not insist on surrendering of the old IDs. If that practice is followedthis year too, it is advisable for the beneficiaries to destroy it or deface it before handing it overat MTC counters. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Property tax revision- a contrary viewSir, There is a general hue and cry on the revision in property tax rates. The half-yearly property tax in my case has been revised from Rs. 830 to Rs.1,850, a revision

of 123 %. The last revision was effected in 1998/99 from Rs. 465 to Rs. 830. The present revisionis after 20 years. While the revision of 123 % per se looks very steep, this actually works outto about 4 % per year compounded. If one looks at the increase in this perspective, it is not byany manner exorbitant and is in tune with inflation rates.

Just to cite an example, a mini coffee costing Rs. 5 twenty years back now costs Rs. 20.Had Chennai Corporation revised the property tax on a yearly basis or even on a 5-yearly

basis, the owners would not have felt the pinch, and the coffers of the Corporation also wouldhave been healthy. I am fully in tune with the views of many expressed in this column that theservice levels extended by the civic authorities are abysmally poor, and a concerted and unifiedeffort from the citizens could shore up matters.

Of course, the discrepancies in the manner in which some flats identical in nature have beenassessed to different levels of taxation need to be addressed on a case by case basis. P. K.Subramanian, Aishwarya Apartments, Gandhi Street , T. Nagar. Ph. 98402 93321

Supreme Court verdict impacts pilgrimage to SabarimalaSir, The Supreme Court verdict to allow entry of women of all ages to Sabarimala Temple

has had a negative impact on the auspicious Mandala/Makara Vilakku season with considerablereduction in the number of devotees visiting the holy shrine.

The authorities have come out with a number of restrictions to avoid untowardincidents. Though a few ‘activists’ tried to enter with full police protection, they could not makeit to the sanctum sanctorum due to the ‘blockade’ by those against the verdict.

Notwithstanding the religious practices, customs and the traditions which are followed fromtime immemorial, it is believed that it is ultimately the God’s wish, and it is HIS summons whichdrive a devotee to a shrine. The presiding deity is the sole authority to decide as to who shouldenter and who should not, and it is dictated by the tradition followed.

As we value and obey the law of the land, we should equally pay obeisance to age-old religiouspractices/traditions as these cannot be simply termed as superstitions or blind beliefs. V. S.Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Lab pays for loss of footwear, thanks to copsSir, Tondiarpet police should be appreciated for registering and acting upon the complaint by

a person about the loss of his month-old expensive footwear outside a medical diagnosticlaboratory where he had gone to undergo some test. Though it is uncommon to receivecomplaints about loss of footwear, the police not only registered the complaint, but also issuedan acknowledgement and CSR (Community Service Register). As the CCTV network outsidethe lab was not working, the police could not get any clue to catch the thief.

After finding out that a police complaint had been registered, the lab owner compensated thecomplainant. Though one may laugh at the complaint, it was the police action which made thelab owner to compensate the cost of the footwear. One must also appreciate the policeauthorities for accepting and acting upon the complaint. K. Harihar, T. Nagar

T. Nagar bus terminus unsafe for commutersSir, This letter refers to the tragic death of a woman while boarding a bus in T. Nagar bus

terminus. It was an accident waiting to happen as there is scarcity of space in the bus terminusforcing parking of buses very close to one another in a haphazard manner, thereby putting thelives of commuters at risk. Passengers can be seen searching frantically for the bus they wantto board. There is no system in place to monitor the smooth arrival/departure of buses andchaos reigns supreme. Though the driver claimed that the accident happened due to poormaintenance and the failure of brakes, he could have averted it by being alert and more awareof the situation in the terminus. T. Nagar being a commercial hub, the terminus if oftenovercrowded and the infrastructure is insufficient to handle the ever increasing demand.

To prevent such accidents/deaths, the MTC authorities should take immediate action toregulate the parking of buses in the terminus, and also expand its facilities. K. Harihar, T.Nagar
