This is big news! Last week, Consumer Reports released a new guide called “How Safe is Your Hospital?” The guide is intended to help patients choose a hospital based on its patient safety and quality scores. Consumer Reports’ researchers studied data from more than 2,000 hospitals in America with a focus on hospital-acquired infections, overuse of CT scans, patient communication, and hospital readmissions rates. On a 100-point scale, the best hospital in the nation earned a score of 72 with the average of all hospitals being 49. Once again, Lee’s Summit Medical Center earned the highest quality score in the Kansas City area among all hospitals! I’m very proud of us but we can do better than a score of 61. I know we can be the best hospital in the nation. Quality improvement is about pushing forward, not looking back or sideways, but focusing on improving our performance with every patient, every day. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to patient satisfaction and highest quality. Your input and feedback are important to this process. During May, please plan to take the employee engagement survey. Your opinions help the hospital improve. Just think about all the changes your ideas have brought to Lee’s Summit Medical Center. We started quarterly town hall meetings on each shift and launched “Highlight the Night Shift” meals monthly. The uniform policy is enhanced and nursing is leading implementation of shared governance. We started “Lunch with Jackie” so a group of long-term and newly hired employees and I can visit over lunch about thoughts and ideas. Pat, Amber, Patrick and I also get out and “round” in the hospital to talk first hand with employees and physicians in their work areas. We do this during the night shift, on weekends and on holidays so everyone has a chance to give input. Please take the survey during May and give your open and honest input. Lee’s Summit Medical Center would like to lead the nation in employee engagement but most importantly we need your confidential, individual opinions. The results will be reported back to you and we’ll take future action knowing where we are strong and where we need to focus more effort. Onward and upward, team! Dear LSMC Family,

Lee’s Summit Medical Center continues to shine!

On a 100-point scale, the best hospital in the nation earned a score of 72 with

the average of all hospitals being 49.

LSMC Welcomes New Risk Manager

Announcing the 2012 Frist Humanitarian Award RecipientsThe Frist Humanitarian Award was created in 1971 and named in honor of Dr. Thomas Frist, Sr. a founding member of HCA. The award honors individuals for their humanitarian and volunteer activities, and recognizes individuals whose daily dedication and care-giving epitomize the highest standards of quality and personal commitment. An employee, a volunteer and a physician are honored each year at each HCA hospital and we are pleased to announce LSMC’s 2012 award recipients.

These winners are a tremendous asset to our patients and the community, and we are proud to have them on the LSMC team. The honorees at the hospital level are entered for national consideration. Those winners will be announced May 10.

HCA Named One of World’s Most Ethical Companies

Lee’s Summit Medical Center’s parent company, Hospital Corporation of America which operates 162 hospitals and 112 ambulatory surgery centers, was recently named one of the Ethisphere Institute’s 2013 World’s Most Ethical Companies.

It is the fourth straight year HCA was achieved the distinction.

According an Ethisphere representative, “Companies recognized are those that truly embrace ethical business practice and demonstrate industry leadership, encouraging peers to follow suit or risk falling behind. HCA is one of only four healthcare providers on this year’s list.”
