A REMINDER ABOUT THE AJ BYLAWS

As we begin planning for the High Holy Days, we ask our members with outstanding account balances to please remit all funds immediately.

In keeping with the synagogue’s bylaws, High Holy Day seat reservation packets are only sent to those members with balances no older than 90 days. For your convenience, we take MasterCard and Visa as well as monthly bank drafts. Please call our Financial Administrator, Holly Southwick at 649-8135 if you have any questions about your synagogue account.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR 2017 HIGH HOLY DAY SERVICES

High Holy Day Seat packets will be mailed in July. In keeping with security recommendations, reservations are again required for all members and guests. This year, tickets will not be

mailed. Instead, everyone will check in at the greeting station as they enter the building. All volunteers at the greeting station will have a reservation list. Ushers will be directed to allow people inside the worship areas only if they have a reservation. Members who cannot afford to purchase seat reservations are asked to contact Rabbi Slosberg at [email protected], well in advance of the High Holy Days. No one will be turned away from worship services due to their inability to pay for a seat reservation, however all arrangements need to be made in advance of the High Holy Days.

AJ BOOK CLUB

Sunday, August 27th 2:00 p.m. Roth Family Board Room

The Adath Jeshurun Book Club will discuss “One More River” by Mary Glickman. The sweeping story of a father and son and of the loves that transform them amid the turbulence of the American South. Bernard Levy was always a mystery to the community of Guilford, Mississippi, even more of a mystery to his son, Mickey Moe, who was just four years old when his father died

in World War II and their family fortune vanished. Mickey Moe sets out to uncover his father’s murky past, from his travels up and down the Mississippi River to his heartrending adventures during the Great Flood of 1927. As the greatest challenge of Mickey Moe’s life unfolds, he will discover the details of his father’s life – one filled with loyalty, tragedy, and heroism in the face of great cruelty from man and nature alike.

NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES By AJ President, Dr. Armand Rothschild

Below are excerpts from the address given by Armand Rothschild at the AJ Annual meeting on May 25, 2017: Dear Members of the Congregation, Members of the Board, Rabbi Slosberg and Cantor Lipp,

When I assumed the presidency, I thought it was for a two-year term with no extensions. I was reminded by one of our former presidents, Steve Evans, that the terms are for one year, but unless you really screw up, most presidents are nominated for at least two years. That made me a little bit nervous. You really don’t want to be the only president to serve one year! Well, so far so good. I’ll be gladly doing this for another year. I appreciate the confidence the Board and the congregation has in me. As I stated last year, this certainly isn’t a one-person show. I have a lot of help. Bill Esakov has contributed significantly to the current operation of the synagogue, as well as to its future. He is involved on multiple committees, and has taken a leadership role in developing AJ’s Life and Legacy Gift Program. He fills in when I am unable to attend functions because of vacation or my call obligations. He will continue to be a vital part of the Board. Howie Evans will step down as a Vice-President, but will continue serving as Chairman of the House Committee. Unlike many positions, this is not just a title but comes with many obligations. Howie has contributed an extraordinary amount of time to the congregation over the last few years. He has been involved with all matters, large and small concerning the building. Whether it involves minor projects such as the gradual change from fluorescent and incandescent bulbs to LED bulbs, or replacing the battery that keeps the eternal light eternal, or major projects like the installation of the new HVAC system for the preschool, Howie plays a vital role. In a 60-year old building, there is always some issue to attend to. Helen Sweitzer has served successfully as our third Vice-President. She was instrumental in coordinating the Shabbat Greeters program, which has been a pleasant addition to our Saturday morning services. She has brought perspective as well as many good ideas to the Executive Committee. She will be stepping down as a Vice-President, but her participation will be welcome as part of the Board of Trustees. Jeff Calderon will continue as Treasurer, devoting his time, talent and accounting skills to the benefit of the congregation. Cybil Flora has agreed to serve as our new Assistant Treasurer. Joel Lerner will step down as Assistant Treasurer, but remain on the Board of Trustees. Special thanks go to our Financial Administrator, Holly Southwick. It is difficult to overstate how important she is to the financial stability of the congregation. In addition to her meticulous bookkeeping skills, she is involved in essentially all financial aspects of the congregation. She is part of the committee that creates the annual budget, has extensive knowledge of what funds can be used to pay what bills, pays the bills, prepares reports for the Finance Committee, and generally makes sure everything balances to the penny. Her devotion to the synagogue is unique, which is why we are lucky she decided to keep working for AJ, even after moving to Colorado. Craig Freidman will remain as Secretary, Murray Toborowsky will continue as Cemetery Warden and Steve Evans will remain as Assistant Cemetery Warden. To keep ideas fresh and make sure the concerns and needs of the next generations are addressed, I am happy to introduce two new vice-presidents.

Liam Felsen has graciously agreed to serve as a Vice-President. He has already served as an active board member for several years, and has contributed his time and talent to the synagogue. He is also helping to lower the average age of the officers, and give a voice to his peer group. Shane Shaps has also agreed to serve as one of our Vice-Presidents. She has been instrumental in voicing the concerns and desires of a younger generation, and will likely bring many innovative suggestions to the Board. She has devoted a lot of time and energy this past year on the Sustainability Committee, and I hope she continues to stay involved in the effort to keep younger members involved with the synagogue. The office staff under the direction of Robin Silverman, continues to do an excellent job in handling the administrative needs of the synagogue. Barb Embry, Molly Evancho and Laura Canfield are all dedicated staff members who bring so much talent and dedication to the congregation. Tina Benningfield, our Food Services Coordinator, is responsible for our 100% sanitation rating in the AJ kitchens, as well as the talent behind many of the delicious meals that we all enjoy. The AJ Preschool under the direction of Director, Kathy Ralston, continues to make us proud. Its reputation is so stellar that registration is often completely full after the first day that registration opens. The preschool not only provides a wonderful early-learning experience for our children and grandchildren, it also provides us with necessary funds to sustain our Congregation. I have tried to make as few mistakes as possible, and there is no better way to do that than to listen to those who have done this job before me, and are willing to share their combined experience, knowledge and love for the congregation. This group includes but is not limited to Arnold Zegart, Frankye Gordon, Steve Evans, Shelly Gilman and Steve Berger. Their ideas, guidance and advice are much appreciated. We are fortunate to have enjoyed almost 36 years with Rabbi Slosberg, and almost 23 years with Cantor Lipp, both of whom have lifetime contracts with AJ. We will be hosting the Cantor’s Assembly convention in 2019, in conjunction with Cantor Lipp being installed as president of that organization. It would be an understatement to say we have been fortunate to have the clergy we have! Now for the future. Our board is getting younger and more representative of our members. We have many items on the agenda. We continue to upgrade the building. We will soon be installing new digital cameras for security. We are undertaking a major project to replace the remainder of the windows in the preschool and administrative wing, and complete the HVAC upgrade in the preschool. We are initiating a Life and Legacy Gift Program which will encourage our members to leave legacy gifts to the synagogue, so it can carry on its mission long after current members are gone. The Sustainability Project hopes to keep the younger generations involved with the synagogue by listening to ideas from our members, and developing these ideas into the programing they want. Currently, the synagogue is financially sound, and we continue to invest heavily in the infrastructure of this building, primarily in the preschool which was not extensively renovated when the public areas of the synagogue were upgraded. The future of the synagogue looks bright, but is dependent on our members. Make use of your membership. Come with your friends to a Saturday morning service, and schmooze and have lunch afterwards. Enjoy the Louisville Orchestra when they have one of their concerts at our synagogue. Learn more about your religion with a Melton course. Take advantage of all the synagogue has to offer. I look forward to seeing more of you all in the coming year.

a. The act of dedicating something to a cause. b. The act of devoting a great deal of time and

energy. c. The state of being ardently dedicated and loyal.

So, what is the definition of “Devotion” at AJ?

a. Barbara Goldberg and Sue Levitch dedicating themselves to Adath Jeshurun. b. Barbara and Sue contributing a tremendous amount of time and energy to running the fabulous AJ Gift Shop, which serves as a fundraiser for the shul. c. Barbara and Sue giving 42 years of their lives to ensure that the AJ Gift Shop is one of the best destination shopping sites in Louisville!

In deep gratitude for the tremendous devotion shown by Barbara Goldberg and Sue Levitch, AJ is dedicating the Confirmation Wall display in their honor. The display of Confirmation photos dates to 1928, and features many of our current AJ members, including Barbara & Sue as shown in their 1956 Confirmation class photo below. In addition to Barbara & Sue, their children and some of their grandchildren were confirmed at AJ as well, which makes this dedication all the more meaningful.

Even though they are being honored now, don’t worry – they’re not going anywhere! As long as there is a Barbara and a Sue, there will be a fabulous AJ Gift Shop!

Congregation Adath Jeshurun extends our very deep gratitude

to Barbara and Sue, and to all the many volunteers who work with them in running our wonderful AJ Gift Shop!

LAURA CANFIELD TAKES NEW POSITION AT AJ!

We are pleased to announce that Laura Canfield will serve in a new role as AJ’s “Communications & Volunteer Coordinator.” Laura has been working in the AJ Office since September 2015, and is the talent behind our email blasts, website and Facebook posts. Laura has expressed interest in using her creativity to transition our online

communications to mobile-friendly platforms, and increase our social media footprint. Additionally, Laura will be working on the website for the AJ Preschool, and creating a quarterly digital newsletter for preschool parents.

Our recent Sustainability Study with Rabbi Elan Babchuck has taught us how to listen to our members in order to learn what kinds of programs and activities they would enjoy at AJ. Rabbi Babchuck performed a separate study with our young families, and determined that programming for this age group would be enhanced if AJ engaged a staff member responsible for volunteer coordination. Rabbi Babchuck has met with Laura, and is very impressed with her already!

As a part of her new responsibilities, Laura will be working with volunteers to coordinate programs primarily for young families. Laura, an involved participant in young family activities at her place of worship, is full of great ideas and enthusiasm. She is anxious to share her passion for community and connectivity with AJ.

Laura and her husband Taylor are the proud parents of Noah, Aria and Leo. Noah just graduated from the AJ Preschool, however his siblings Aria and Leo will be continuing this fall. Laura is very familiar with many of our preschool families as one of our parent volunteers. AJ is so fortunate to have Laura working on behalf of our synagogue!

IN MEMORIAM

The Congregation extends our condolences to the family and friends of Reena Kling and Theresa Owen.
