Administrators’ Message:

The month of March took us by surprise! Winter stuck around for a few more harsh days and we can’t wait to put inclement weather and freezing temperatures behind us! We continue to strengthen and deepen our capacity and understanding of best practices for building inclusion in our school, in our classrooms. In the Fall, our grade 8 classes embarked on a series of lessons and art workshops facilitated by Metis artist Nathalie Bertin, and supported by their teachers, where they had the opportunity to express their social identities through painting. We are very excited to showcase their finished artwork. As you enter the building, you will see in the main foyer works of art completed by the students themselves expressing their social identities. Students learned about Metis and other Indigenous identities, ways of being and knowing and used this learning as inspiration to create their own pieces. It was wonderful to see the expressions on students’ faces as they walked into the building after the March Break to see their work, a piece of themselves, on display. We hope to continue projects like this one in the years to come. Our Grades 4 to 8 classes were entertained and inspired by the powerful messages of building a positive school culture presented by motivational speaker Anthony Maclean. In his presentation he shared stories, raps and videos that emphasized for our students the power of language and the positive negative impact their actions can have on school experiences for themselves and others. He shared clear, simple strategies students could use to foster positive experiences for everyone at school. Our students’ response and level of engagement was uplifting! Looking ahead to June, we are very excited to begin planning for our year end Carnival and Barbecue. We plan to expand this annual event and make it a fundraiser filled with activities, community partnerships and fun, fun, fun, for the whole family! Funds raised at this event would support class-room play programs, providing each classroom with outdoor play materi-als. participate in archery in May and June. It has been a great success! All safety guidelines are strictly adhered to. Please refer to http://safety.ophea.net/safety-plan/168/1769 to peruse at

your leisure. All participating students will need to pass a safety test prior to using the equipment. Any breach of the regulations

will result in an immediate dismissal from the activity. Thank you to M. Deschenes and M. Durand for bringing this opportunity to Fréchette!

SWITCHING BUSES

This is a reminder to parents/guardians that, FOR SAFETY REASONS, students can only ride their designated bus. They are not allowed to ride another student’s bus to or from school for any reason. Your child’s name is associated with a particular bus number and must only ride that bus. We thank you for your support.

Re: Student Busing Eligibility Did you know that students’ busing eligibility changes throughout their school career? Your son/daughter’s eligibility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Below are the provisions for eligibility identi-fied in the Board’s Transportation Policy #680: All YRDSB students in Grades JK-3 who live within 1.2 km of their school are not eligible for transportation

All YRDSB students in Grades 4-8 who live within 1.6 km of their school are not eligible for transportation • All YRDSB students in Grades 9-12 who live within a transit served area are not eligible for transportation. To view Board Policy #680 Student Transportation, please visit www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca. For more information about bus transpor-tation and to determine your son/daughter’s eligibility please visit www.schoolbuscity.com.

School Zone Safety

The rush of cars, buses and children arriving at school can create many dangers. Everyone plays a role in ensur-

ing the safety of children when they are going back and forth to school.

Drivers, to keep kids safe in the school zone:

Reduce your speed and be ready to stop at all times. Avoid distractions like a cell phone

Drive cautiously and follow the rules (even when you’re late!)

Be patient and wait for children to complete their crossing before proceeding

Parents, teach your children to:

Stop, look and listen before stepping out of the car or bus

Walk only on the sidewalk and crosswalk and follow the crossing guard’s instructions

Be sure that drivers see them before they cross by making eye contact

Sit on the side of the car where they will exit

Consider practicing a drop-off during an off-peak time and teach your child what to do. Or start a program at the

school where volunteers open car doors and escort children to the building. For health-related information call York Region Health Connection at 1-800-361-5653 or visit www.york.ca.

Wet & Muddy Spring Weather Yes, it’s that time again and we have lots and lots of mud. Please make sure that you send your child with indoor and outdoor shoes, as well as an extra change of clothes, including top, bottom, extra socks and under things. Please also send an extra pair of gloves. For the younger students, we strongly recommend that they have snow pants with them on a dai-ly basis. Thank you in advance for your support.

To ensure the safety of students, school bus service may be cancelled due to inclement weather, extreme temperatures and/or poor road conditions. In these cases, parents and students should develop alternate care/transportation arrangements. Cancellation decisions will only be made after thorough consultation with the Safety Officers of school bus companies servicing York Region and are based on several factors including precipi-tation, air temperature, road conditions and weather forecast. Please note the following;

A decision to cancel school bus service will be region-wide meaning all school buses, vans

and taxis will not operate.

School bus routes may be cancelled when severe weather may not be affecting all mu-nicipalities in York Region. Both the YRDSB and YCDSB operate many regional educa-tional programs. Students attending these programs are transported over large attendance areas encompassing several municipal boundaries. This limits the ability to cancel bus ser-vice using a municipality or zone methodology.

When bus service is cancelled all school tests and/or examinations will be cancelled and re-

scheduled.

Student trips involving the use of school buses will also be cancelled.

Unless otherwise stated, schools will remain open and parents can make arrangements to transport their children to and from school even if school bus service is cancelled. If buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not operate in the afternoon. Therefore students transported to school by parents will require the same transportation home.

Parents, students and school staff are asked to access the following radio and television stations after 6:00 a.m. to receive bus cancellation information:
