Administrators’ Message:
Students and staff have been keeping busy this past month and March has flown by.
As part of our Healthy Schools mandate, several students and teachers have been
busy promoting activities to support healthy living. On March 6th, they led the
school in ‘The Big Crunch’ to promote healthy eating, specifically fruits and vege-
tables. During our Character Assembly, teachers distributed apples to all students
and we all simultaneously bit into our apples. We definitely made a big crunch!
This month, our students showed respect for our earth and environment by practic-
ing Earth Hour here at school on Friday, March 28th. We made a significant impact
on our energy consumption at school in only one hour!
On the learning front, we continue to work hard to ensure we have a positive impact
on our students’ achievement. In February, we began work on our School Touch-
stone. Classes contributed their ideas to what the ideal L-H Fréchette P.S. would be
like. This month, a group of students worked together with teacher advisors to
bring those ideas into a draft form of our School Touchstone. We are looking for-
ward to sharing it with the school and the community in the coming month or two.
As a staff, we have been engaged in a review of our School Improvement plan and
have been working collaboratively to create inclusive and engaging learning oppor-
tunities that will support our student learning needs. As teachers and staff learn
together, we are able to refine our professional practice and build on each other’s
strengths in order to serve our students in their learning and equip them for the 21st
century!
As the weather warms up and the ground begins to thaw, we would like to remind
our families to please send their child/children to school with a change of clothing,
socks and shoes. Appropriate clothing will help students stay warm, dry and safe as
they enjoy playing in the outdoors with their friends and classmates.
We continue to experience a high volume of student lates and absences. Parents/
Guardians are reminded that for our Safe Arrival Program, they must report to the
office all lates and absences for their child/children on our ATTENDANCE LINE
AT 905-907-7884. We would also like to remind parents that students must be in
class promptly at 9:20am. Please try to have your child/children at school on time.
Research supports that frequent lates and absences have a greater negative impact
on student success in school than a short, yet consecutive day’s absence.
We would like to thank our School Council and our parents/guardians for their
contributions to our Donation Drive and for a successful Silent/Auction and Family
Games Night.
Please continue to refer to our school website for copies of the newsletter. The web-
site is an invaluable reference for school information including the school calendar
of upcoming events, newsletters, lunch forms, and much more.
Respectfully yours,
Mme Furlin et Mme Korinis

SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING
Next School Council Meeting will
take place on Wednesday, April 16th
at 7:00pm in the Staff Room.
Everyone is welcome!
LUNCHES AT SCHOOL
Nutrition and healthy eating is as important to health as it is to learning.
There are many children arriving to school without their snack and/or lunch or not enough.
Please ensure that your child/children come to school with sufficient food and snacks to
make it through the school day as we are not equipped to serve large groups of children in
the office that arrive with no lunch. We have a number of students coming into the office
requesting lunch and/or snacks on a daily basis. We also have students who come into the
office complaining that they do not like their lunch. Please talk to your child/children about
what they like to eat and the importance of eating what they have in their lunch.
Please feel free to contact the office if you need support in this matter.

The new milk order started on March 26 and is ongoing until June 9th. Please view our calendar at the end of this newsletter and keep it handy, as all the lunch days are

BOYS AND GIRLS JR. BASKETBALL TEAMS
The boys and girls junior basketball teams have been training several times a week. Before school, after school and at most recesses, the gym was full of athletes striving to do their best. Both groups of students are incredible teammates and are growing and improving in many ways. Good luck to our junior girls and boys teams. The teams will be participating in tournaments throughout April and we wish them all the best. Every member of our teams deserve much recognition for their dedication, hard work and support of one another over the past month. Here’s to a great season! Mme Crouchman, M. Durand, M. Wayling

Healthy Schools Committee:
Jump Rope for Heart
Spring is in the air! What better way to kick it off than with a demonstration from the Heart & Stroke skip-
ping team on April 1st. That will put us in the mood for the big event, Jump Rope for Heart, at our school
on April 25th when we will get to show off our skipping talents. Students in grades 1 to 4 (although all
grades are welcome) will practise skipping skills in gym class and during recess. All students will receive
a free skipping rope from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. LHF has been participating in Jump Rope for
Heart for the last 6 years and raised over $36,000.00. We are hoping to raise about $6,000.00 this year.
Please make a donation or ask friends and family to donate to help the school meet its goal. It's great to see
students skipping during recess!
Metro Green Apple Grant - Big Crunch
Fréchette has received a $1000.00 Metro Green Apple grant. Funds will be used to
purchase healthy snacks such as Ontario apples for the students in the school. Apples were purchased for
the Big Crunch earlier in March. Students will receive a delicious apple snack during Jump Rope for Heart
on April 25th. As well healthy snacks will be provided at several other events this Spring. Thank you
Metro Grocery store!
Healthier Options
Remember to try to eat some healthy foods such as:
Cheese with crackers, veggies with dip is always good, cut veggies with dip, fruit with cheese.
Try making/baking treats, like your own chocolates.
Meetings Our next meeting TBD.
Any questions or to volunteer please contact: Judy at [email protected]
Eco-Schools Les mercredis sans dechets (Wasteless Wednesdays) Eco Team members are making announcements and
visiting classes. Encourage your children to bring reusable containers and reduce waste. Reducing single use water bottles: Fréchette has two water bottle filling stations and the third should be
installed on the third floor this Spring. Please encourage your child to bring in a reusable water bottle
labelled with their name and fill it at one of our new water bottle filling stations. Let's reduce waste at the
school!

ENVIRONMENT CLUB- Continued
EcoSchools: April is Earth Month
LHF will join schools and community groups for the Vaughan 20
minute makeover on April 25th, to clean up the community. Our
students will clean up the school yard and adjacent park.
Ongoing during the month of April -Bring boomerang or litterless
lunches, turn off the lights during lunch and often during the day,
successfully separate recycling, garbage and green bin waste. Eco Schools news- Earth Hour took place at LHF on Friday, March 28th
from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Most classes turned off lights and electronics.
Some lights in the halls were turned off by the caretakers. Mlle
Lumiere and her sidekick (LHF's energy saving superheroes) visited
many classes to encourage participation. There was a drop of about 10 percent in the energy consumption in the
school at that time. This was observed on the York Region District
School Boards EcoWatch website. This website is a great tool for
teachers and students to observe how a few simple actions such as turn-
ing off lights or turning off electronics in the classroom can reduce our
consumption of energy therefore lowering the school's environmental
footprint. The EcoTeam is going to try to get students and staff to re-
duce energy consumption in the month of April and make it a habit.
Cell phone recycling at the school. Help the EcoTeam! Bring in your
good quality used cell phones. We are looking for up-to- date brand
names.(IPhone, Blackberrry, etc.) We send them to Think Recycle for re
-use or recycling and help the environment and the money received for
them goes to help environmental projects at the school. We will also accept
laser cartridges from printers. Please DO NOT send laser or toner cartridges.
Livres D’Anniversaire—Birthday Books
Let’s celebrate our children’s birthdays in the classrooms. In lieu of cakes and treats
Louis-Honoré Fréchette has a Birthday Book program. If you wish, you can donate a
French book to your child’s classroom to celebrate their birthday or any other special
day. Parents/Guardians can look online at the French Scholastic site for ideas of books
that they could purchase and donate. Your child will bring it with them to school on their birthday, take it to the office to get a special sticker
with his/her name and honouring his/her birthday. The sticker will be placed on the inside of the front
cover for everyone to see. The teacher can then read the story to the class and the book will remain in the
classroom library for all children to enjoy. Thank you to all those who have already donated their birthday
books. Merci!! This is a great way to honour our children’s special day and at the same time encourage reading! Merci et
bonne fêtes!

BUSSING:
This is a reminder to parents that FOR SAFETY REASONS students can only ride their designated bus. They are not to take another student’s bus to or from school for any reason. Your child’s name is associated with a particular bus number and must only ride that bus, therefore we ask parents to honour this.
UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION It is vital to have up to date information, if you have made any changes to your home, business or cell numbers or have a new address or emergency contacts please make sure that the office is informed. You may email the changes to either Mme Apa at [email protected] or Mme. Pupo at [email protected]. Thank you.
Wet & Muddy Spring Weather Yes, it’s that time again and we have lots and lots of mud. Please make sure that you send your child with indoor and outdoor shoes, as well as a change of clothes, including top, bottom, socks and underthings.

SIGNIFICANT EVENTS CALENDAR 2012/13
Many children have special events throughout the year such as birthday parties, Confirmations
and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. If you would like to know about certain dates to support the planning of
your own event, a parent volunteer has offered to assist families by keeping an electronic
calendar. Please feel free to email Guy Peer at [email protected] if you need to know about
certain dates, or would like to share the date of your event for others’ planning purposes.
Please note that this calendar is entirely organized by parent volunteers. L.H. Fréchette assumes no responsi-
bility in the coordination or maintenance of this calendar.
ARE YOU MOVING?? If you know that you will be moving and your children will be changing schools, please let us know as soon as possible. This will help us be more accurate when determining staffing and preparing class lists.
As always, any information regarding change of home or work address or emergency contacts should be reported to the office to ensure smooth communications between home and school.
Dear Parents/Guardians, Re: Student Busing Eligibility Did you know that students’ busing eligibility changes throughout their school career? Your son/daughter’s eligibility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Below are the provisions for eligibility identified in the Board’s Transportation Policy #680:
All YRDSB students in Grades JK-3 who live within 1.2 km of their school are not eligible for transportation
All YRDSB students in Grades 4-8 who live within 1.6 km of their school are not eligible for transportation
• All YRDSB students in Grades 9-12 who live within a transit served area are not eligible for transportation. To view Board Policy #680 Student Transportation, please visit www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca. For more information about bus transportation and to determine your son/daughter’s eligibility please visit www.schoolbuscity.com.
Volunteers All volunteers who have direct contact with students MUST have a valid Volunteer Vulnerable Sector
Screening Check. If you are planning to help on a field trip, drive students to athletic events, volunteer in the
school, etc., the Board now requires us to have this check prior to any contact with students (even if you
have volunteered previously). Parents must request a letter for volunteer purposes from the office, signed by Mme Furlin before going to
the Police Services office to request the form. Letters are available from the office. Please get your Police Screening Check as soon as possible as it sometimes takes several weeks to process.
