WINTER CARNIVAL

Our Fréchette Winter Carnival was a great success. We celebrated French culture and engaged in a

variety of learning experiences that enhanced the students‛ appreciation of the French language,

French Canadian traditions and celebrations.

Our Carnival began on Tuesday, February 19th and continued through to Friday, February 22nd. The week was

fun and informative for parents/guardians who came to visit. We enjoyed our morning carnival music, outdoor

activities, Bingo game and class activities. Thank you to all parents/guardians who joined us. Great fun was

had by all.

It’s that time of the year again where we spring the clocks forward on Sunday, March

10th at 2:00am. REMEMBER: SPRING FORWARD,

FALL BACK!!!

MARCH 10TH

Primary Play - Une promesse, c'est une promesse The grade 3s continue with rehearsals for the primary musical play "Une promesse,

c'est une promesse," based on the book by Robert Munsch and Michael Kusugak.

Grade 2 students are welcome to join the choir. All of the parts have been cast and

rehearsals have started. The actors have been divided into 4 casts, which will per-

form over two evenings (two performances per evening) in May. A letter with more

information will go home soon. Congratulations to all the participants!

Message From Our Trustee I hope everyone has had a great start to the second half of the school year. Over the past few months, I have

had an opportunity to connect with families, students, staff members and with our broader community. I

have seen a lot of exciting opportunities for students to explore their interests, celebrate their identities, and

develop skills and knowledge that will benefit them in the future. Many students are participating in skills competitions or other events where they problem-solve, innovate,

collaborate and further develop their technical skills. Students compete in robotics, construction, hairdress-

ing, transportation, 3D animation and much more. These events are among the many options available to

help students explore different careers and pathways, and gain valuable experience. We are grateful for the

support of community partners in helping to provide these great learning opportunities to our students. I also want to express my appreciation to our broader school community. One of the priorities in our Multi-

Year Strategic Plan is to build collaborative relationships. The relationships that our schools have with

families is so important. There are many different ways you can be involved - talking to your child’s teach-

er, asking your child about homework, or volunteering on a field trip or the school council. Your contribu-

tions make a difference to your child’s success and to the success of our schools.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable March Break.

MESSAGE FOR PARENTS WHO HAVE ORDERED HOT LUNCHES FOR THEIR CHILD

Nutrition and healthy eating is as important to health as it is to learning. Unfortunately, there

are many children arriving at school with no food or not enough food to eat, or the lunch that

they ordered is not served that day. Please ensure that you mark the date for all your child/

children’s lunches . Also ensure that your child/children have sufficient food and snacks to

make it through the school day. We are not equipped to serve groups of children, that for

whatever reason, arrive in the office with no lunch or not enough lunch. We have a number

of students coming into the office requesting lunch and/or snacks on a daily basis and stu-

dents who come into the office complaining that they do not like their lunch. Please talk to

your child/children about what they like to eat and the importance of eating what they have

in their lunch. There also seems to be a question about the dates that lunches will be served. Lunches that

are ordered from school will ALWAYS be served on the same calendar day (i.e. Monday—

Friday). If we have a day off, for example, Monday or Friday or a (PA Day or holiday)

lunches are not served on that day. REMINDER: Please be aware that there will be no hot lunches served on inclement weather days. Please send your child/ren with a lunch on these days. Current order for pizza ends on March 25. Inclement weather day on January 21

will be made up on April 1. Inclement weather day on February 25 will be made up

on April 4. New order starts on April 8 and ends June 24. Current order for Tuesday lunch ends March 26. Inclement weather day on Janu-

ary 29 will be made up on April 2. New order will start April 9 and ends June 25. Current order for Wednesday lunch ends March 27. Inclement weather day on

February 6 will be made up on April 3. Inclement weather on February 27 will be

made up on April 10. New order will start April 17 and ends June 26. Current order for Thursday lunch ends March 28. New order will start April 11

and ends June 20. Current order for Friday lunch ends on March 29. New order will start on April 5

and ends June 21. Please feel free to contact the office if you have any questions or need support in this matter.

SPOONS AND FORKS - Every day many of students come down to the office requesting a

spoon or fork so that they can eat their snacks/lunches. The school, unfortunately, cannot provide

plastic spoons and forks. We ask that parents/guardians please provide a reusable spoon or fork

from home in their child’s lunch. Students who get hot lunches are provided with spoons and/or

forks in their lunch. Please remember the three R’s, Recycle, Reduce, Reuse Thank you for your support in this matter.

BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAMS Since December, the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have been training several times a week. Before school, after school and at most recesses, the gym was full of athletes striving to do their best. In the end, both groups of students became incredible teammates and grew in many ways. Neither team ever gave up, and participated in several after-school tournaments, learning new lessons all the way. A special congratulations to both teams who played in tournaments in February. Many of the games were very close and the teams kept their cool. Congratulations to the girls’ team for placing 4th place in the Area tournament. Congratulations to the boys’ team for placing 2nd in the Area tournament. BRAVO! What an excellent season! Congratulations! Every member of our teams deserve much recognition for their dedication, hard work, and support of one another over the past few months. This will help the school make small, yet impactful changes to reduce our waste production. Let's keep up those boomerang lunches! If you didn't finish your lunch, bring your leftovers home! A boomerang lunch helps not only to reduce waste at school, but reduce food waste as well! Re: Student Bussing Eligibility Did you know that students’ bussing eligibility changes throughout their school career? Your son/daughter’s eligi-bility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Below are the provisions for eligibility identified in the Board’s Transportation Policy #680: • All YRDSB students in Grades JK-3 who live within 1.2 km of their school are not eligible for transportation • All YRDSB students in Grades 4-8 who live within 1.6 km of their school are not eligible for transportation • All YRDSB students in Grades 9-12 who live within a transit served area are not eligible for transportation. To view Board Policy #680 Student Transportation, please visit www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca. For more information about bus transportation and to determine your son/daughter’s eligibility please visit www.schoolbuscity.com. Please be advised that those students who fall under the above criteria have not been eligible for bussing as of March 19th, 2012.

EXTRA CHANGE OF CLOTHES AT SCHOOL

The snow is not over yet, but we hope that soon we are nearing the end of the winter

season and we may have warmer days ahead. This means that snow and ice will melt and

the field/pavement area may be a wet and sloppy mess. With this in mind, we are asking

parents/guardians to please provide your child/children with a change of clothes in a

plastic bag, clearly marked with their name (including, sweater, undershirt, pants, under-

pants, socks and an extra pair of gloves). This will avoid a call home. We appreciate your co-operation in this matter.

BUSING: This is a reminder to parents that, FOR SAFETY REASONS, students can only ride their designated bus. They are not allowed to take another student’s bus to or from school for any reason. Your child’s name is associated with a particular bus number and must only ride that bus, therefore we ask parents to honour this.

Change of Personal Information It is vital to have up to date personal information, if you have made any changes to your home, business or cell numbers or have a new address or emergency contacts please make sure that the office is informed. You may email the changes to either Mme Apa at [email protected] or Mme Pupo at [email protected]. Thank you.

French Immersion Accommodation Plan

French Immersion registration for grade one ended on February 8, 2019. Late applications can be made in person at your local French Immersion school. Late applications will be considered on a first-come-first-served basis. All registrations will be subject to review and verification. To ensure the safety of students, school bus service may be cancelled due to inclement weather, extreme temperatures and/or poor road conditions. In these cases, parents and students should develop alternate care/transportation arrangements. Cancellation decisions will only be made after thorough consultation with the Safety Officers of school bus companies servicing York Region and are based on several factors including precipi-tation, air temperature, road conditions and weather forecast. Please note the following;

A decision to cancel school bus service will be region-wide meaning all school buses, vans

and taxis will not operate.

School bus routes may be cancelled when severe weather may not be affecting all mu-nicipalities in York Region. Both the YRDSB and YCDSB operate many regional educa-tional programs. Students attending these programs are transported over large attendance areas encompassing several municipal boundaries. This limits the ability to cancel bus ser-vice using a municipality or zone methodology.

When bus service is cancelled all school tests and/or examinations will be cancelled and re-

scheduled.

Student trips involving the use of school buses will also be cancelled.

Unless otherwise stated, schools will remain open and parents can make arrangements to transport their children to and from school even if school bus service is cancelled. If buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not operate in the afternoon. Therefore students transported to school by parents will require the same transportation home.

Parents, students and school staff are asked to access the following radio and television stations after 6:00 a.m. to receive bus cancellation information:

RADIO 590 AM 640 AM 680 AM 860 AM 1010 AM 1050 AM 1540 AM 1580 AM 88.5 FM 89.9 FM 92.5 FM 93.1 FM 94.9 FM 95.9 FM 97.3 FM 98.1 FM 99.1 FM 99.9 FM 101.1 FM 102.1 FM 104.5 FM 100.7 FM 105.9 FM 107.1 FM TELEVISION CITY TV CTV Barrie CTV Toronto CP24 GLOBAL NEWS A bus cancellation message will also be available at schoolbuscity.com and by calling 1-877-330-3001, or by following @YRDSB and @YCDSB on twitter.
