Lotto NRFL 2015 Welcome

The Lotto NRFL (Northern Regional Football League) has existed in some shape or form since 1965 and brings together clubs from the Northern Football, Auckland Football and WaiBOP Football federa-tions, and this season celebrates its 50th anniversary.

To tie in with this historic milestone, the Lotto NRFL will have a new look and feel with the introduction of a logo and further branding, including social media and this weekly programme, for one of the country’s leading club-based competitions.

The elements used within the logo refer to various features of the different regions. The wavy lines represent the wide expanses of water that surround Northland, Auckland and the Waikato, including the Waikato River, while the mountains evoke the Waitakere Ranges, Bombay Hills and Kamai Ranges, as well as the numerous volcanoes that are scattered throughout the area.

The Harbour Bridge connects Auckland’s southern suburbs with the North Shore and stands proud in the distance of the logo while the history of the competition is reflected in the slogan ’50 Years of Local Pride’.

We hope you enjoy and good luck for the 2015 season!

4 | Programme 2015

East Coast Bays vs Hamilton Wanderers

Bay City Park | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Hayden Tutbury,

Assistant Referees: Chris Casey, Charlie Tseng

East Coast Bays had a disappointing campaign last season by their recent standards – they were champions in 2010 and 2013 – and will be looking to get back to their previous table-topping ways. Wanderers will provide a stern test though as Mark Cossey’s men enjoyed an impressive campaign in 2014 to finish just a point off second spot.

Central United vs Three Kings United Croatian Cultural Club | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Bruce Horrox,

Assistant Referees: Tom Woo, Greg Woo

These sides will not have the chance to ease their way into the action as this local derby is sure to result in a highly-competitive contest. José Figueira’s young charges always produce football that is pleasing on the eye but the aim for Central will be to turn those performances into a more consistent set of results. Three

Kings will be looking to repeat the hot start they made to last season.

Waitakere City vs Onehunga Sports Fred Taylor Park | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Simon Lount,

Assistant Referees: Tony Wall, John Kimber

Had it not been for the plight of Ngaruawahia last season, Waitakere would likely have dropped out of the top flight so coach Colin Tuaa will be looking for a significant improvement this time. Sports will fancy their chances in heading out west after showing their promise with a mid-table placing and Chatham Cup semi-final berth in the previous campaign.

Melville United vs Bay Olympic

Gower Park | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Ben Norman,

Assistant Referees: Andrew McAllister, Andrew Lamberth

Bay Olympic are an unknown quantity as they have a new man at the helm in Carl Jorgensen and plenty of fresh faces in the line-up. The Melville players are likely to be highly motivated on their return to the big time and are in the winning habit after earning promotion. Claiming a scalp such as the Bay would make a noteworthy statement on their intentions for this season.

Eastern Suburbs vs Glenfield Rovers

Kristin School | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens Assistant Referees: Gordon Campbell, Brett Willis

Newly-promoted Suburbs might have hoped for an easier start to life back in the Premier League than a visit by the defending champions but will at least get an early indication of the standards they need to reach. This is a potential banana skin for Rovers but Danny Donegan has made some shrewd acquisitions and has enough quality at his disposal to avoid an upset.

Western Springs vs Birkenhead United

Seddon Fields | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 5pm | Referee: Mark Fisher Assistant Referees: Avnit Maharaj, Rajesh Kumar

Springs have achieved back-to-back promotions and there will be great interest in whether they can keep that golden run going under the guidance of Neil Emblen. With their first opponents being last season’s runners-up, we should find out quickly if they have the goods to make a real impact at this level. If Birkenhead do not turn up in the right frame of mind then a shock could be on the cards.

Norwest United vs Claudelands Rovers

Huapai Reserve | Sunday 29 March | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Chris Casey,

Assistant Referees: John Kimber, Rhys Kimber

This is a big occasion for Norwest as they are making their bow in the Women’s Premier and will want to make a good impression on their first outing. There is no doubt the campaign will pose a tough challenge for the newcomers though and they have certainly not been handed an easy start with the visit of last season’s third-place getters.

Three Kings United vs Forrest Hill Milford United

Keith Hay Park | Sunday 29 March | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Sarah Williamson,

Assistant Referees: Dimitry Sabitov, Torres Chang

Defending champions Forrest Hill have a target on their backs after going through the previous season with only one defeat and Three Kings will feel they are among the sides capable of bringing them down a peg. The hosts have not won this competition since 2007 and did not manage a title challenge last year so

will be keen to return to their former glories.

Lynn-Avon United vs Glenfield Rovers

Ken Maunder Park | Sunday 29 March | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Greg Woo,

Assistant Referees: Brandon Day, Caleb Moffatt

Lynn-Avon have endured an unsettling off-season with the majority of the squad leaving the club and expectations have had to be curbed accordingly. George Vale still has the reins and his main task will be to get the best out of a young group, many of whom will be playing at this level for the first time. They are

likely to receive a baptism of fire at the hands of Glenfield, last season’s runners-up.

Papatoetoe vs Eastern Suburbs

Murdoch Park | Sunday 29 March | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Aiden Moffatt,

Assistant Referees: Kieran Withers, Eric Yu

Suburbs have been the main beneficiaries of Lynn-Avon’s player losses and also have a new coach with Paul Marshall replacing Rico Wilson, who has headed across town to Western Springs. Given the changes, last year’s performance probably counts for little and they will be facing an opponent with far more stability,

the returning Andrew Kirk having largely the same squad to work with at Papatoetoe.

Western Springs vs Fencibles United

Seddon Fields | Sunday 29 March | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Tony Wall,

Assistant Referees: Neil Tobin, Jordan Morrow

Springs and Fencibles both had disappointing campaigns in 2014 and the former was only saved from relegation due to the struggles of Bay of Plenty. Their new man in charge, the aforementioned Wilson, is used to competing at the other end of the table after his reign at Eastern Suburbs and the Springs hierarchy will be hoping those standards rub off on the squad.

6 | Programme 2015

Mt Albert-Ponsonby vs Metro FC

Anderson Park | Friday 27 March | Kick-off: 7pm | Referee: Chris Wolken,

Assistant Referees: Vaughan Couillault, Torres Chang

The Great North Rd derby has the honour of opening the 2015 Lotto NRFL season and it is fitting that the fixtures computer has thrown up such a clash to begin with. These local rivals have had some fierce battles over the years so this will not be one for the faint-hearted. Both are coming off seasons to forget and therefore have plenty to prove in the new campaign.

North Shore United vs Manurewa

Allen Hill Stadium | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mazhar Batoor,

Assistant Referees: Charles Nothnagel, John Bennett

North meets south here as two of last season’s strugglers come together. With Paul Temple now running the North Shore show as Director of Football, the Devonport-based outfit are likely to enjoy a much better showing this time while Manurewa will be looking to arrest a slump that has seen them drop out of the Premier League before coming second-from-bottom in Division One.

Ngaruawahia United vs Mangere United

Centennial Park | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Carl Watkins,

Assistant Referees: Dominic Hopkirk, Hubert Bakx

Given how much of a challenge they found the step up, Ngaruawahia are probably relieved to be back at a level they will feel confident of competing well in. They earned just two victories in the Premier League but this season should be different under the tutelage of new coach Magi Manresa. Mangere also have a new boss in Miroslav Nikolic, who will be keen to make a quick impact.

Hibiscus Coast vs Tauranga City United

Stanmore Bay Park | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Allan Wilson, Assistant Referees: Kevin Turnock, Khalid El Gana

Tauranga’s initial reward for going up is this lengthy trip to the Whangaparaoa Peninsula and they will be hoping to make the mileage worth it by bagging at least a point. This is a difficult one to pick as Tauranga will be full of confidence after losing just twice last year while the Coasters were among the promotion contenders in Division One.

Forrest Hill-Milford United vs Waiuku

Becroft Park | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 3pm | Referee: Jan-Hendrik Hintz, Assistant Referees: Kristian Klette, Neil Tobin

Although both sides are newly-promoted, the players will feel like they are back in the second division after battling each other to go up in the previous campaign. In avoiding the established first division clubs, they have an excellent chance of starting with three points so will be hoping to take advantage. Forrest Hill will go in as favourites after finishing the higher of the teams last season.

Ellerslie vs Takapuna

Michaels Ave | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 3pm | Referee: James Ashford, Assistant Referees: Nick Kang, Pat Barrett

Ellerslie missed out on promotion last season after looking odds on to get the job done for most of the campaign. The danger is suffering a hangover from that disappointment so coach Chris Wallace, who is new to the role, needs to make sure his charges banish those memories quickly. Takapuna finished just one place below Ellerslie so an even encounter is likely here.

50 Years of Local Pride

Onehunga Mangere United vs Albany United

Mangere Domain | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andy Holdsworth,

Assistant Referees: Mike Williamson, Eric Yu

Both these sides finished in the lower half of the division last season and will be eyeing a place in the upper reaches this time. Each has stability at the helm with Mark O’Donnell and Ian Cliffe remaining in charge at Onehunga Mangere and Albany respectively. Whether they have enough talent in the ranks to push for promotion remains to be seen but an opening day win would be a step in the right direction.

Papatoetoe vs Manukau City

Murdoch Park | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Sarah Walker, Assistant Referees: Morgan Breuer, Anthony Barnes

Manukau are back in the Lotto NRFL after a one-year absence and will be looking to prove they belong in one of the country’s leading club-based competitions. They have been handed a favourable draw on their return with this southern derby as Papatoetoe won just three times last season. That was in Division One though so Manukau are facing a side that was two levels above them just a few months ago.

Fencibles United vs Oratia United

Riverhills Park | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Dimitry Sabitov, Assistant Referees: Caleb Moffatt, Perry Tompsett

Fencibles finished third in this division in 2013 so will have been far from satisfied with last season’s lower mid-table placing. They have appointed a young coach in Daniel Rattray and will hope his enthusiasm and fresh ideas can result in a change of fortunes. Oratia likewise have a new man in charge but Steve Cain’s face is already familiar as he is also the club’s Director of Football.

Papakura City vs Te Atatu

McLennan Park | Saturday 28 March | Kick-off: 5pm | Referee: Jeremy Ferguson, Assistant Referees: Mark Fleming, Rene Vaughan

Te Atatu have joined Manukau as one of two Auckland-based sides coming into the Lotto NRFL fold this season but, like their fellow newcomers, have enough experience at this level to compete well. They will be put to the test by Papakura however as Jason Heather’s men spent all of last season fighting for promotion and only missed out by the finest of margins.

North Force vs Claudelands Rovers

Kamo Sports Park | Sunday 29 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Steven Black Assistant Referees: Jeremy Ferguson, Michael Badham

North Force will feel they should claim all three points here as they finished well above second-from-bottom Claudelands last season and the visitors legs may be sluggish after their lengthy road trip. The hosts showed glimpses of their potential in the previous campaign without ever quite managing a bid for promotion and will be keen to give it a decent crack this time.

AFC Fury vs Lynn-Avon United

Maramatanga Park | Sunday 29 March | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Paul Shakes,

Assistant Referees: Brett Willis, Jacqui Stephenson

Tauranga-based Fury are the other side to have earned a place in the Lotto NRFL by climbing out of the local leagues and will be keen to prove a point after being denied entry for 2014 after the fielding of ineligible players. They will have the element of surprise over Lynn-Avon and will feel they can take something from a side which finished third-from-bottom last season.
