ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER OPENER: The Dodgers last night
completed a three-game sweep of the Padres, becoming the second
team in Major League Baseball history to shut out the opposition in
its’ first three contests of the season. This afternoon is the Giants’
2016 home opener as the Dodgers begin a four-game series against
their Bay Area rivals. Following an off day Monday, Los Angeles will
open its home slate on Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks in a
sold-out 1:10 p.m. game at Dodger Stadium.
The Dodgers last night joined the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals as
the only teams in history to record three consecutive shutouts
to start the season and in the process saddled the Padres with
the longest scoreless streak to begin a Major League
campaign, as the Cardinals beat the Mets and Phillies during
their streak. That St. Louis squad put up five more zeroes in
their fourth contest, before losing to the Phillies, 4-3. They set
the big league mark with 32.0 consecutive scoreless innings
to start the season.
According to Elias, the Dodgers’ 25 unanswered runs to start
the season are the most in baseball history, besting the 23-0
start the National League champion 1974 Dodgers enjoyed.
Last year, the Dodgers went 8-11 against the Giants,
including a 2-8 mark at AT&T Park, but did clinch the
National League West in San Francisco behind Clayton
Kershaw’s one-hit shutout on Sept. 29, 2015.
The Dodgers are attempting to become the first team since
the National League West began in 1969 to win four
consecutive division titles. The only teams with three-in-a-
row are the Dodgers (2013-15) and Atlanta Braves (1991-93).
A CALMING INFLUENCE?: Dodger right fielder Yasiel Puig had a
heck of a first series of the season, as he went 6-for-10 with a homer,
two triples, five runs scored, two walks, a hit-by-pitch and four RBI in
the three games against San Diego. Puig reached base safely in nine of
his 13 plate appearances, good for a 1.992 OBP.
CLARK KENTA: Dodger right-hander Kenta Maeda not only fired
6.0 scoreless innings and won his Major League debut, but also blasted
a solo homer in his second big league at-bat. Maeda becomes the first
Dodger to homer in his Major League debut since shortstop Jose
Offerman did so vs. the Montreal Expos on Aug. 19, 1990. Maeda is
the first Dodger pitcher to homer in his big league debut since Dan
Bankhead vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates on Aug. 26, 1947.
Maeda is the third pitcher to hit a home run in his big league
debut since 2000 and the first since the Nationals’ Tommy
Millone on Sept. 3, 2011.
BRING THE WOOD: Dodger left-hander Alex Wood will make his
first start of the season this afternoon in the Giants’ home opener.
Wood is about to enter his fourth Major League season and his second
with the Dodgers after being acquired by the club in an eight-player
deal with the Braves on July 30, 2015. Wood, 25, posted career
numbers last season, winning a career-high 12 games (12-12) in 32
combined starts, while posting a 3.84 ERA.
Wood was 0-3 with a 7.13 ERA (14 ER/17.2 IP) and 13
strikeouts in five Cactus League starts.
Dodger starters have now tossed 19.0 consecutive scoreless
innings to start the season, allowing just seven hits in the
process, good for a .109 opponents’ average. Clayton
Kershaw, Scott Kazmir and Kenta Maeda also combined to
strike out 18 and walk just one against the Padres.
Not to go unnoticed, the bullpen has tossed 8.0 scoreless
innings to begin the season while striking out 10 against just
one walk. The opposition is just 4-for-28 (.143) against the
‘pen, and with J.P. Howell and Joe Blanton entering the
game last night, every Dodger pitcher has taken part in the
three shutouts except for Alex Wood and Ross Stripling.
FAMILIARITY BREEDS SUCCESS: The Dodgers’ 2-8 mark at
AT&T Park last season tied their second-worst mark in San Francisco
since the clubs headed west (1958, 2-9; 2003, 2-8), but Los Angeles has
still enjoyed more intra-divisional success than any other club over the
past two seasons:
Best Record vs. Own Division - 2014-15 MLB
Los Angeles Dodgers 96-56 (.632)
St. Louis Cardinals 91-61 (.599)
Washington Nationals 89-63 (.586)
Los Angeles Angels 87-65 (.572)
Baltimore Orioles 86-66 (.566) SOURCE: STATS, LLC
STAND UP AND TAKE NOTICE: Dodger third baseman Justin
Turner has recovered from offseason knee surgery and just hit .308 (4-
for-13) with two doubles and two RBI in the season’s opening series.
Since becoming a Dodger in 2014, Turner has been one of the best
hitters in the National League:
Current NL Players, Highest BA – 2014-16

Justin Turner, LAD .314
Buster Posey, SF .314
Paul Goldschmidt, ARI .313
Dee Gordon, MIA .313
A.J. Pollock, ARI .311
Joe Panik, SF .308
*Turner’s .874 OPS over that time ranks seventh among current
National Leaguers. SOURCE: STATS, LLC
ON THE MEND: The Dodgers began the year with 10 men on the
disabled list, which is likely the most to start a season in baseball
history. Since records were readily available in 2002, the previous high
was nine by the 2012 Boston Red Sox.
THE YOUNG BUCK: Dodger shortstop Corey Seager singled in his
final at-bat Wednesday, keeping alive his six-game hitting streak,
which began on Oct. 1, 2015. Seager is hitting .417 (10-for-24) with
two doubles, a homer and four RBI during the run, with the Dodgers
going 6-0 in those contests.
A LOOK BACK: The Dodgers went 92-70 in 2015, as the club
claimed its third-consecutive Division title for the first time in franchise
history. The Dodgers qualified for postseason play for the 20th time
since moving to Los Angeles and the 29th time in franchise history.
UNDEFEATED NEW GUY: Dave Roberts won his Dodger debut,
becoming the third consecutive L.A. skipper to win his first game with
the club, joining Joe Torre in 2008 and Don Mattingly in 2011. Roberts,
43, was named the 10th manager in Los Angeles history (28
th in
franchise history) on Nov. 23, 2015 and previously served as the
Padres’ bench coach from 2014-15 and first base coach from 2011-13.
The native of Okinawa, Japan played for Giants’ skipper Bruce Bochy
with San Diego in 2006 and with San Francisco in 2007 and 2008.
Dodger pitching coach Rick Honeycutt returns for an 11th
season and is the lone returning member of the Los Angeles
coaching staff besides catching instructor Steve Yeager. The
new-look staff is comprised of bench coach Bob Geren
(2015: Mets’ bench coach), hitting coach Turner Ward
(2015: D-backs’ hitting coach), first base coach George
Lombard (2015: Red Sox’ minor league outfield/baserunning
coordinator), third base coach Chris Woodward (2015:
Mariners’ first base coach), bullpen coach Josh Bard (2015:
Dodgers’ pro scout), assistant hitting coach Tim Hyers (2015:
Red Sox’ minor league hitting coordinator) and quality
assurance coach Juan Castro (2015: Dodgers’ minor league
infield coordinator).
