“PULL UP A CHAIR”: The final home game of the 2016 campaign
will also be the final regular-season game Vin Scully ever calls at
Dodger Stadium, as well as an opportunity for the Dodgers to clinch the
National League West Division on Fan Appreciation Day. The 5-1
homestand has brought Los Angeles to a commanding 7.0-game lead
with seven games to play and a victory today or a Giants’ loss in San
Diego hands L.A. the crown. Tomorrow, the Dodgers will head to San
Diego and embark on a season-ending trip that begins Tuesday and
features three games apiece against the Padres and Giants.
The Dodgers’ remaining seven games are all against
divisional opponents (1 vs. COL, 3 vs. SD, 3 vs. SF) and the
club has gone 41-28 (.594) against the NL West.
Last night’s victory moved the Dodgers to a season-high 23
games over .500.
“IF YOU WANT TO MAKE GOD SMILE, TELL HIM YOUR
PLANS”: The Dodgers today need a win or a Giants’ loss for their
fourth consecutive and 15th overall National League West title. An NL
West title will mean the Dodgers have reached the postseason for the
seventh time in the last 11 years and are playing “October Baseball” for
the 30th time in franchise history (21st time in Los Angeles).
The Dodgers would become the first team in NL West history
to win the division in four consecutive seasons. The last MLB
team to win four straight division titles was the Detroit Tigers
(2011-14, AL Central) and the last NL club to do so was the
Philadelphia Phillies, who won the NL East in five
consecutive seasons from 2007-11.
On this date in 2008, the Dodgers clinched their 10th National
League West crown when an afternoon loss by Arizona
handed them the title.
“THEY ARE NOT ONLY ALIVE, THEY ARE WELL”: Dodger
center-fielder Joc Pederson went 1-for-1 with two walks and a season-
high three runs scored last night. Pederson’s 1.171 OPS this month ranks
third in the Major Leagues, trailing just Freddie Freeman (1.204) and
Jung Ho Kang (1.196).
Andrew Toles is hitting .364 (8-for-22) off the bench, despite
not being called up until July 8 and appearing in just 43 games.
Toles’ eight pinch hits lead the Dodgers and overall, the 24-
year-old Georgia native is batting .323 (31-for-96) with three
homers, nine doubles, 15 RBI and 17 runs scored.
HE HAS A LOT OF LITTLE BOY IN HIM: Dodger shortstop Corey
Seager already holds the Los Angeles rookie record for hits (187), runs
(102) and doubles (40), currently is tied with Mike Piazza for the
highest OBP of any LA rookie (.370) and also remains in the mix for the
top mark in batting average (.310, behind Piazza: .318, 1993).
Seager ranks among the NL leaders in hits (187, 3rd), runs (102,
T-5th), doubles (40, T-4th), total bases (310, 5th), batting average
(.310, 7th), multi-hit games (56, T-2nd), extra-base hits (69, 7th)
and slugging pct. (.514, 10th).
“LET’S GET BACK TO THIS ONE”: Dodger right-hander Brandon
McCarthy will be reinstated off the disabled list today and make his
ninth start of the season. McCarthy is 4-1 in nine career starts at Dodger
Stadium and fired 5.0 scoreless innings against the Rockies in his 2016
debut back on July 3 at Chavez Ravine.
“AND HOW!”: Limited single-game postseason tickets are on sale now
for potential home games for the National League Division Series and
the NL Championship Series and can be purchased online at
Dodgers.com/postseason.
“WE WILL TRY AND TURN THE PAGE, AT LEAST FOR A
COUPLE OF HOURS AND CONCENTRATE ON A CHILD’S
GAME CALLED BASEBALL”: The Dodgers share in baseball’s
devastation over the death of Marlins’ ace José Fernández and offer his
family and friends our condolences during their time of mourning.
Dodger Stadium will observe a moment of silence in honor of Fernández
prior to the game today.
THE ROAR OF THE CROWD, ONE LAST TIME: Vin Scully is
scheduled to call just four more games for the Dodgers, but today will
be his final game behind the microphone at Dodger Stadium. On their
way into the stadium this afternoon, each fan will receive a special
edition of the Dodger Insider Magazine dedicated to Scully.
This afternoon, fans are encouraged to stick around until the
end of the game and hear a special message from the legendary
broadcaster.
Scully’s final three games will be Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at AT&T
Park in San Francisco.
All media in attendance today are invited to write a short
congratulatory message for Vin on the poster board in the back
of the Vin Scully Press box.
“ALL YEAR LONG, WE LOOKED FOR THEM TO LIGHT THE
FIRE, AND ALL YEAR LONG, THEY ANSWERED THE
DEMANDS”: Los Angeles has posted the lowest ERA in the Majors
this month with a 2.43 mark (53 ER/196.2 IP) in 22 games (15-7--the
best record in the NL), and overall, the Dodgers rank among the Major
League leaders in ERA (3.63, 4th), opponents’ batting average (.230,
2nd), strikeouts (1449, 1st), WHIP (1.17, 2nd) and shutouts (15, T-1st). The
Dodgers’ 1,449 strikeouts this season are a franchise record, eclipsing
last year’s mark of 1,396.
The Dodger bullpen leads the Majors in ERA (3.22, 201
ER/561.0 IP).
With seven games still left to play, the Dodger relief corps set
a club record with 561.0 innings this season.
Kenley Jansen ranks second in the Majors with a career-high
47 saves and also places among the league’s best relievers in
ERA (1.76, 2nd), opponents’ batting average (.146, 2nd), WHIP
(0.63, 1st MLB) and strikeouts (101 in 66.2 innings, 3rd).
A BRIDGE TO THE PAST, UNITING GENERATIONS: Dave
Roberts has guided the Dodgers to the brink of the postseason in his first
year as manager, using a franchise record-tying 55 total players and 31
different pitchers (both records originally set last year) on a club that saw
28 different players spend time on the DL, the most for any team in the
last 30 years since at least 1987. Roberts is attempting to join Hall of
Famer Tommy Lasorda (1977) as the only rookie manager to lead Los
Angeles to a division title.
3.7 MILLION FANS AND A MILLION BUTTERFLIES: This
afternoon, the Dodgers are expected to surpass 3.7 million fans in
attendance for the eighth time in franchise history (2006-9, 2013-16).
This season, Los Angeles leads the Major Leagues in both total and
average attendance, which stands at 45,642 heading into today. The
Dodgers want to send a heart-felt thanks to the best fans in baseball.
