Cassandra Taber, better known as Cassie, has been a Longview resident for the past year. In celebration of Cassie’s first year anniversary at Longview, her moth-er, Pamela Nardi, who works at Longview, asked her to make a list of what she liked best about living here. Her reply was “everything!”

The rest of the list goes like this, “the friends I’ve made, my apartment, the caring staff, the delicious meals, the trolley rides, having freedom to maneuver, doing programs, being the vice president of the ACF resident council, weekly housekeeping, scheduling my own appointments and being able to spend time with my mom!”

Many of you know Pamela; she’s been with Longview for nearly 20-years in the Adult Day Program and most recently assisting with coverage for the front

desk.

Pamela states, “as a parent and caregiver, I applaud all the hard work and wonderful care all the departments give to our tenants and residents, especially with the chal-lenges of COVID-19.”

Cassie loves her life at Longview and Pamela loves her job!

IC Research Opportunity: Physical Therapy Research Study for People with Parkinson Disease

Physical therapists at Ithaca College are investigating the impact of exercise instruction us-ing telehealth for people with idiopathic Parkinson disease. Eligible participants will be provided exercise instruction over “Zoom” either individually or in a group with other people with Parkinson disease. The exercise sessions will last 1 hour and will be held 2 times per week for 8 weeks. Participants will receive small exercise equipment and a wrist worn heart rate monitor to use while participating in the program. Each participant will be able to keep this equipment at the end of the study. Before the beginning of the 8-week program and at the end of the 8-week program all participants will come to Ithaca College for a testing session to examine coordination, walking, balance, and endurance. To be eligible to participate, individuals must have a diagnosis of Parkinson dis-ease, be able to walk safely without help, be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, and have access to a device that can be used with the Zoom platform. Those with medical conditions limit-ing the ability to exercise or significant cognitive impairment will not be eligible to partici-pate in this study. If you would like more information about this program, please contact our research team at [email protected] or (607) 274-5824.

After reading an article in the Ithaca Times about Milo, AKA Mike Richmond, playing softball I decided to meet with him. I wanted to learn more about Milo, what softball means to him and to share his story with the Longview community. I ended up getting insight into Milo, who he is, his good sense of humor, how he sees the world and how he sees his fellow residents at Longview. Below are shared pieces of our conversation and I antici-pate you will enjoy getting to know Milo as I have. Perhaps you’ll even get a sense of appre-ciation and feel inspired.

We discussed his many years of playing ball, his career which is all mentioned below but the take away was more significant than what I had intended this piece to be, keep reading and you’ll see what I mean.

Milo: “It can be argued that each and every one of us living here at Longview has retired from a significant and important profession, job or role in life that has contributed to making either the world a better place, a community better organized, or a family better connected. As such, we are all professionals at many different skills and are blessed by a rather lengthy life. Along life’s path, many of us have discovered or developed hobbies.”

Such is the life of Milo Richmond who grew up in a small town in Southern IL with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team only 50 miles away. As a young boy, Milo, like many other boys thought he should become a professional baseball player. ‘What a DREAM-ER!!’ Nevertheless, we all have to start somewhere and his first choice was playing ball.

After High School and town team sports he soon discovered that his knowledge, skills & ability in Biology, Physics, Chemistry and related subjects far outstripped his talent for Major League Baseball. It was a sad day when Cardinal Tryout Manager, Bill Vir-don, who had just completed his own professional career with Pittsburgh, informed Milo that he no longer needed to attend tryouts because he was too slow, too small, and couldn’t hit a curve ball! Now it was back to the books at Southern Illinois University, on to the University of Missouri for graduate degrees, then to East Tennessee State and finally to 42 years of teaching and research at Cornell University followed by retirement in 2008. (Continued on page 13)

Pictured: Milo & his championship rings.

For Milo the dream never faded. In 2005 at the age of 65, he joined an amateur team of senior softball players from Syracuse, NY and helped them win the USA National Title for players age 65-70. He has continued with this hobby and has since won National Tourney Titles in 2007, 2012, (age 70) and 2014 (age 75). This year at age class 80, Milo and the Syracuse Cyclones are working to win another championship at the age of 80+ as I type this! He’s currently pitching in the East-ern National Championships in Loudoun County, VA. His wife Bonnie is with him and the two have been able to travel all over together for Championship games.

When you see Milo, the ‘amateur sports enthusiast’, congratulate him on once again making it to the championships and we hope – another win!

As I wrap this up, I would like to add that Milo wasn’t as interested in me writing about him as he was in making this piece about the Longview community. He reit-erated the importance that each individual has and continues to contribute to the world.

Milo’s final comment is “do what you can still do, don’t ever give up and keep on keeping on! The worst thing that can happen is that your grandchildren and per-haps a few others may worry about your sanity. At this point we should worry more about caring for each other than being concerned about our sanity.”

You may have noticed that there have been a few changes going on at Longview. From this end, Kim and Nicole have been transitioning out of Case Management and full-time into Longview’s Marketing & Sales Department. The offices previously held by case man-agement have now been relocated. Kim and Nicole’s offices can be found in the Market-ing & Sales Information Center in #228. No, we didn’t actually take up residency here but we are starting to utilize this new space to show off some of the new ideas that might be coming this way in terms of updates to Longview.

You may have also noticed that Taylor has moved her of-fice to the 4th floor where she will now be serving as the lead case manager. She and a newly hired case manager will be occupying offices on the 4th floor and in the garden level and putting their expertise to work primarily with Longview’s assisted living and enhanced assisted living residents. And with that said, we’d like to introduce our newest case manager, Danielle Iverson, who will be starting in her new position on July 26. Danielle has many years of experience as a social worker working in long-term care fa-cilities and programs serving adults and she is looking very forward to joining our family. It’s a bonus that she is also a dog person and enjoyed being entertained by Kim’s “Geor-gia” during her interview.

With all of the changes and movements happening in our

world at Longview it might feel like something will get missed

or forgotten along the way. We want to assure you that al-though that is quite possible, we are also very aware of it and are striving to make sure that nothing falls through the cracks. Please don’t hesitate to visit Kim and Nicole in #228 (C wing/2nd floor) with any concerns or just to say hello (if the door is unlocked, you are welcome to come on in).

Tours and inquiries into Longview’s community have picked up immensely since restrictions due to COVID-19 have been lifting. We are quite busy meeting the needs of the com-munity and looking forward to that continuing. You will be seeing many new faces over the next few months with new resident’s moving into the assisted living residences as well as the independent living residences. It is an exciting time and we are looking forward to sharing it with all of you!
