Halloween Party for Residents at Longleaf Neuro-Medical Center
What happens when you put a festive table full of food and
punch, coupled with a wonderful DJ pumping out some of
the great dancing oldies and party strobe lights in the Light-
house Room at Longleaf?
We can tell you first-hand; lots of happy noise, dancing, eat-
ing, and laughing. Even several of those confined to walk-
ers and wheelchairs were up on their feet keeping time to
the beat of the music. It was a wonderful sight to see! Of
course our members joined right in after all the work was
completed.
A special thanks to Chairpersons Patsy Nobles and Ruth
Godwin for a great job of purchasing the food and making
all the goody bags (one for each resident).
Don’t forget to purchase your full-service Autobell
coupons and ask your friends and family also. This
is the fourth year we have had the Autobell fund-
raiser, and our club does very well in raising
money to fund our service projects during the
year. Those coupons also make great speaker
gifts and stocking stuffers for our family and
friends!!

GOLDEN CIRCLE QUARTERLY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Page 6
Living The Creed
Charter Member - Eloise Sidelinger
The Golden Circle Optimist Club has four charter members
who are active participants. We want to celebrate each and
every one of these special ladies and will begin to highlight
one member per quarter. I visited with Eloise Sidelinger
early in November to find out about this charter member. I
came away with a great sense of what an optimist and a hum-
ble person she is. I will tell you more about this later.
First, let’s look at a little background. Eloise was brought up in a farming community in
Johnston County. There was no expectation that she should gain any further education. Her
aunt would not hear of this and sent for Eloise to come to see her in Washington, DC. Once
there her aunt gave Eloise room and board and paid for her to attend a business school.
While attending school, she worked in the House of Representatives. Later, upon gradua-
tion, she worked for the Governor of Virginia. It was in business school that she met
Wayne Sidelinger.
Eloise says “If you want to see a true Optimist, look at Wayne.” In 1987, Optimist Interna-
tional decided that women could become members of the Optimist Club. Wayne and Eloise
set about starting the Golden Circle Optimist Club. I asked Eloise what she had hoped to
accomplish starting the club, and her smart response was “to have enough people to have a
club.” Through their efforts, they started the club with 30 members.
When asked “What part of the Optimist Creed lifted you up during a difficult time?,” she
said "All of it" and began reciting the creed. When you say someone is humble, you may
be referring to having a modest estimate of one’s own importance, may be referring to
one’s background and may be self-effacing. All of these statements sound unflattering, but
there is another side to the coin where you will find Eloise. Eloise is respectful, modest,
not proud or arrogant. She claims that Wayne is the real Optimist and takes no credit in the
formation of our club, but what I see is a beautiful, hopeful, optimistic woman who not
only knows the creed but lives it. (Interviewed by Ruth Godwin)

PGI - PERSONAL GROWTH & INVOLVEMENT
Page 8
Living The Creed
Get those PGI passports ready! It’s time to improve our-
selves and our club by accomplishing things we never
thought we could - but WE CAN!
There are 10 levels in the PGI Program and most of our
members are at level 1 today, but by the end of the Opti-
mist year, many of our members will be moving up in the
growth levels by accomplishing things which will improve
themselves personally by gaining knowledge and the con-
fidence to invite and bring in new members, to speak in
front of a group, to read about the history of Optimism and
our Creed and several other fun and challenging things.
Our new members will also be getting their passports and
will move to level one in this quarter and learn how they
too can begin learning and moving up to higher levels by
the end of the Optimist year. Let’s all work hard on improv-
ing our leadership and our personal skills!
This year’s chairperson, Carol Collier, is planning to spend
time each quarter to help all members with their personal
growth and involvement goals.
Essay & Oratorical Contests—2015-2016
This year’s essay and oratorical con-
tests will be here before we know it!
The Essay Contest will take place in Febru-
ary and the topic is “Lead by Example: Re-
ality or Fiction”? We will need to submit
our winning essay to the District Chair,
Sandy Cyphers by 2/28/16.
The Oratorical topic is “How My Best
Brings Out the Best in Others.” Our club’s
contest will be held in March or early April.
Our top two contestants will go to the Zone 3
Oratorical Contest which will be held in
April. The top two winners from the Zone
contest will move on to the District Contest
which will be held in late April or early
May.
The winner from the District Oratorical will
receive a $2500 scholarship and be eligible
to move on to a regional contest and then a
worldwide contest and a chance to win schol-
arships for $22,500. This year’s District
Chair is Darrell Fulcher from Wilmington
Cape Fear (resides in Morrisville, NC).

A FRIEND OF YOUTH

We’re on Facebook!
The Wilson Golden Circle Optimist
Editor -
Angela Iwaniuk
10861 McKenzie Rd.
Bailey, NC 27807
Our club was formed in 1987 and is an “all ladies” club. We strive to
live by the tenets of the Optimist Creed and promote optimism as a
way of life, inspire a respect for law, inspire an interest in good
government, and aid and encourage the development of youth, in
the belief that the giving of one’s self in service to others will ad-
vance the well -being of man, our community and even the world.
While performing community service projects and raising funds, we
also manage to have a good time and enjoy the fellowship of other
like-minded women. We invite other women to come join us!
As most of you know, Optimist International voted this
year at the convention in New Orleans to change our
slogan from “Bringing Out the Best in Kids” to “Bringing
Out the Best in Youth, Our Communities, and Ourselves.”
In the five years I have been an Optimist member, I
have been so thrilled to be a part of making a differ-
ence in our community and in the lives of our youth. I
know that we have unintentionally worked on bringing
out the best in ourselves at the same time. Let’s pledge
to continue the good work we have already been do-
ing, and let’s be intentional about bringing out the best
in ourselves!
The Golden Circle has a reputation in our zone and in
our district for being women on the move who know how
to get things done. I propose that we let all the clubs in
the whole of Optimist International know who we are by
submitting our application next spring for consideration
as Optimist Club of the Year! I have no doubt that we
can achieve that distinction!
Brenda’s goal was to double our membership during her
term as President. We made great strides toward that
objective. It is my goal that we will continue Brenda’s
dream, with emphasis on bringing in younger members.
While we are an enthusiastic, hard-working bunch,
many of us are at the stage in life when health issues
and our “can do” get in the way of our “want to.” So
let’s continue to invite our friends, but also think about
whom you know who is under the age of 60! Do you
have a daughter or daughter-in-law who lives in our
area? Most of those younger women are busy, working
wives and mothers! If we can show them how much fun
we have together and how much good we accomplish
in our community and with our youth, perhaps they will
think of the Golden Circle as the outlet they need in
their lives.
It is said that an average of 35 children are impacted
by the work of each Optimist member. I believe we
are well on our way to our 35 apiece. But let’s not rest
on our laurels. Each of us needs to invite at least one
person to join our organization so that we can be twice
as effective.
Let us work to keep our promises that we state in our
creed and let us work together for the good of our
club, the good of our community, and especially to be a
friend of youth.
