4. Why doesn’t A-B Tech use the money it receives from the NC Education Lottery?A-BTechdoesnotreceivefundingfromtheEducationLottery.

Why doesn’t the College raise tuition to cover its construction and renovation costs?A-BTechdoesnothavetheauthoritytoraisetuition.TheNorthCarolinaGeneralAssemblysetstherateforallcommunitycollegesinthestate.Collegesarenotallowedtokeepthetuitiontheycollect.ThatmoneyisforwardedtotheStateofNorthCarolina.FundsforinstructionandstaffarebaseduponaformulathattheStateappliestoallcommunitycolleges.However,manyclassesconductedinthesummermustbeself-supporting.Bydefinition,thismeanstheymustpayforthemselvesbycoveringallcostsassociatedwiththem.TheCollegeisallowedtosetaself-supportingrateforthoseclasses.

• TheeconomyofBuncombeandMadisoncountiesreceivesnearly$400millioninincomeeachyearduetothepastandpresenteffortsofA-BTech.

• A-BTechstudentsbenefitfromhigherearnings,therebyexpandingthetaxbaseandreducingtheburdenonstateandlocaltaxpayers.Intotal,studentsgeneratemorethan$25millionannuallyinhigherearningsduetotheirA-BTecheducation.

• Studentsenjoyanattractive23%rateofreturnontheireducationalinvestmentinA-BTechrecoveringallcosts(includingwagesforegone)insixyears.
