GATHERING
OPENING HYMN Blessed Jesus at Your Word | 221:1-2, 4
This hymn is in the public domain.
Soloist:
1 Blessed Jesus, at your Word We are gathered all to hear you.
Let our hearts and souls be stirred Now to seek and love and fear you,
By your teachings, sweet and holy, Drawn from earth to love you solely.
2 All our knowledge, sense, and sight Lie in deepest darkness shrouded
Till your Spirit breaks our night With the beams of truth unclouded.
You alone to God can win us; You must work all good within us.
4 Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Praise to you and adoration!
Grant that we your Word may trust, Confident of our salvation,
While we here below must wander, Till we sing your praises yonder.
M: O Lord, open my lips.
C: And my mouth shall declare your praise.
M: Hasten to save me, O God.
C: O Lord, come quickly to help me.
M: Give glory to God, our light and our life.
C: Come, oh, come, let us worship.

COME, OH, COME, LET US SING TO THE LORD Venite
Text by Marty Haugen ©1995, 1996 GIA Publications, Inc.

Refrain
Come, oh, come, let us sing to the Lord,
let us shout with joy to our saving Rock;
Come, enter in with our songs of praise,
come, enter in with thanksgiving.
You are a great and a wondrous God,
cupping in your hands all the depths of earth.
You made the hills and the mountains high,
you made the seas and the dry land.
Refrain
Come, let us worship, and bowing low,
kneel before the One who has made us all.
You are the God whom we call our own,
we are the flock that you shepherd.
Refrain
THE WORD FIRST LESSON Joel 3:12-16
Joel depicts the Lord's judgment over the nations in terms of a harvest. Though often seems that
God does nothing about the evil in our world, he promises that a day is coming when all evil will be
destroyed and all his people will be saved.
12
“Let the nations be roused;
let them advance into the Valley of Jehoshaphat,
for there I will sit
to judge all the nations on every side. 13
Swing the sickle,
for the harvest is ripe.
Come, trample the grapes,
for the winepress is full
and the vats overflow—
so great is their wickedness!”
5
14 Multitudes, multitudes
in the valley of decision!
For the day of the LORD is near
in the valley of decision. 15
The sun and moon will be darkened,
and the stars no longer shine. 16
The LORD will roar from Zion
and thunder from Jerusalem;
the earth and the heavens will tremble.
But the LORD will be a refuge for his people,
a stronghold for the people of Israel.
PSALM OF THE DAY I Love You, Lord | Psalm 18

Refrain:
I love you, Lord, my strength.
I love you, LORD, my strength;
O LORD, my rock my fortress, my Savior.
Refrain
My God, my rock where I take refuge;
my shield, my saving strength, my stronghold.
I cry out, “Praise be the LORD!”
and see, I am saved from my foes.
Refrain
The LORD lives, and blest be my Rock!
May the God of my salvation be exalted.
The LORD gives great victories to his king,
and shows merciful love for his anointed.
Refrain
6
PSALM PRAYER
M: Lord God, our mighty Rock of salvation, give us such strength of faith that we may cling to
you in every trouble and, armed with your strong Word, be preserved from every assault of
Satan and his forces of evil; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.
SECOND LESSON 1 Peter 4:1-8
Despite living among the weeds of evil, Christians are called to live as God's wheat. Recognizing that
the day of the final harvest draws near, we love deeply from the heart by reflecting the forgiving
love that is found only in Jesus.
4 Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because
whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. 2 As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly
lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 3 For you have spent enough time in the
past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing
and detestable idolatry. 4 They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living,
and they heap abuse on you. 5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the
living and the dead. 6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now
dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live
according to God in regard to the spirit.
7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray.
8 Above
all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
Please stand for the reading of the Gospel.
GOSPEL Matthew 13:24-30,36-43
Jesus' parable reminds us that evil will be present in this world until the day of final judgment. In the
meantime, Christians offer lives of faith-filled obedience to the Savior who has rescued them from
sin and its eternal consequences.
24
Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed
in his field. 25
But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the
wheat, and went away. 26
When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also
appeared.
7
27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where
then did the weeds come from?’
28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.
“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’
29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with
them. 30
Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect
the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my
barn.’”
36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to
us the parable of the weeds in the field.”
37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.
38 The field is the world,
and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil
one, 39
and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the
harvesters are angels.
40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.
41 The Son
of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin
and all who do evil. 42
They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping
and gnashing of teeth. 43
Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.
Whoever has ears, let them hear.
M: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise be to you, O Christ.

MUSICAL OFFERING
Text by David W. Rogner, b. 1960 © 2002 David W. Rogner.

1 Your kingdom, O God, is my glorious treasure,
My pearl of incomp’rable worth.
Its value exceeds ev’ry standard of measure,
Surpassing the wealth of the earth.
Lord, give me your grace and the pow’r of the Spirit
To value this treasure aright
That, never allured by the world, I inherit
Your kingdom of glory and light.
3 Your kingdom, O God, is a field for the growing
Of seeds that your mercy has sown,
But still in our midst is the enemy sowing
The weeds that imperil your own.
Sustain me, O Lord, till your day of returning
And harvest me homeward at last,
To shine in the homeland that quiets all yearning,
Where sorrow and danger are past.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
M: Lord of heaven and earth, you made all things beautiful. You have provided green forests
and refreshing streams. You have arranged the orderly procession of day and night for our
work and rest.
C: Thank you for the mountains and the prairies, the roaring sea, and the gentle breeze.
M: Thank you for roofs that shelter us, for clothing that protects us, and for food and drink.
Thank you for our work, for projects that are done well, and for the approval of supervisors
and teachers. Thank you for all who serve at night to make our days more pleasant.
C: Thank you for associates at work, for their encouragement and praise, and for the
joys of human friendships.
M: Thank you for our cities and our countrysides, for farms and factories, for streets and
highways, and for all of life that flows so swiftly before us.
9
C: Thank you for children at play, their boundless energy, and their shouts of joy and
laughter.
M: Thank you for the morning greetings we receive, and for all the smiles that come from faces
loved by you.
C: Thank you for Christian parents, for their affection and their care.
Special prayers and intercessions may follow.
M: Hear us, Lord, as we give thanks for personal blessings.
Silent prayer.
M: Thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ, for his coming to us in Word and sacraments, for his
giving and forgiving, and for listening to our prayers. Receive our gifts and offerings as our
sacrifice of praise.
C: Lead us in thankful living today and always. Amen.
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on
earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those
who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom,
the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN Rise, My Soul, to Watch and Pray | 472
This hymn is in the public domain.
All join to sing:
1 Rise, my soul, to watch and pray; From your sleep awaken!
Be not by the evil day Unawares o’ertaken.
For the foe, Well we know,
Is a harvest reaping While the saints are sleeping.
2 Watch! Let not the wicked world With its lies defeat you
Lest with bold deceptions hurled It betray and cheat you.
Watch and see Lest there be
Faithless friends to charm you Who but seek to harm you.
3 Watch against yourself, my soul, Lest with grace you trifle;
Let not self your thoughts control Nor God’s mercy stifle.
Pride and sin Lurk within,
All your hopes to shatter; Heed not when they flatter.
4 But while watching also pray To the Lord unceasing.
God protects you day by day, Strength and faith increasing,
So that still Mind and will
Shall unite to serve him And forever love him.
