Sunday, 16 Nov 2014: Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A
Gospel Reading: Mt 25:14-30 Because you have been faithful over a few things, enter into the joy of the Lord.
For the remainder of the year I’ll be including reflections on the Joy of the Gospel and encourage you to read through and try to take something from each reflection. You can access the full document for free at the Vatican Website through either a flipbook or a text version. Reflection & Prayer
“Weeds among the wheat”
The biblical image of the ‘weeds among the wheat’ (Mt 13:24-30 – see Scripture) is used repeatedly by Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium (‘Joy of the Gospel’). “Let us believe the Gospel when it tells us that the kingdom of God is already present in this world and is growing, here and there, and in different ways: like the small seed which grows into a great tree... and like the good seed that grows amid the weeds...and can always pleasantly surprise us.” (EG, 278)
“We all know that the devil plants evil where there is good, trying to divide people, families and nations.” We are tempted to act impatiently, to try to pull out the weeds, even though it might also damage the good wheat in doing so. “But God knows how to wait. He looks into the ‘field’ of each person with patience and mercy. God sees the dirt and the evil much better than we do. But God also sees the seeds of good and patiently awaits their germination.” (en.radiovaticana.va)
Additional thoughts
Ten ways...to ‘tend the field’ within each of us:
1. Be thankful for God’s blessings. Keep a gratitude journal.
2. Develop small, daily, life-giving habits.
3. Ponder a little bit of Scripture each day.
4. Stay close to the sacramental life of the Church.
5. Don’t feed your mind junk food. Be discerning about what you read, view.
6. Contribute to the mission of the Church. Put your shoulder to the plough.
7. Seek guidance from a wise, spiritually mature mentor.
8. Stay focused on persons not things; on Jesus, not religious ideology.
9. “Be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:28). Bringing children into the world,
and raising them according to God’s teachings of love is a profound
expression of gospel richness.
10. Over to you... from your experience, add a tenth point.
Scripture Jesus put before them another parable: The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, “Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?” He answered, “An enemy has done this.” The slaves said to him, “Then do you want us to go and gather them?” But he replied, “No; for in gathering the weeds
you would uproot the wheat along with them.
Let both of them grow together until the
harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the
reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them
in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat
into my barn.” (NRSV)

FROM THE MUSIC ROOM with Mrs Suzie Morris
One of our KM students brought in an instrument from home - his ukulele. Most of us were familiar with this instrument but we didn't know that it has a body, neck and head just like us!
We explored the different parts, listen to a little 'song' played on it and discussed what family of instruments it belonged too. In listening to the sound it produced, we figured out how the pitch could be changed by playing (and tuning) the different strings and also changing where our fingers were on the frets.
We also felt the sound by placing our hand on the back of the body the ukulele while it was being strummed - we could feel the sound vibrating!

NO footballs or basketballs are to be brought to school – the school has allocated equipment for recess and lunch.
A mum approached me after a recent seminar with an interesting question about her son’s behaviour amongst his peers.
She said her son is lovely but loud. He was a little too enthusiastic with his friends. So much so, that his buddies felt downright uncomfortable around him and sometimes gave him the cold shoulder. He also liked to be the boss, and didn’t like being a follower in social situations.
Here was a perfect opportunity for this mum to do some coaching to help her son negotiate social situations.
Sure, it’s great to get excited but kids from 2 to twenty-two need to learn that they have to tone their enthusiasm down around certain people and in certain situations. That’s what the socialization process requires. Besides, popular children generally know when to follow the lead of others, how to share their possessions and that they won't always have their own way. This ability to share comes with maturity, but sometimes children need some gentle parental help in this area.
Here are three techniques to use to help your child to behave well around others, and maintain friendships as well.
✔✔ Remind: Be pre-emptive with your teaching. Before they visit their friends give them a couple of pointers that are relevant to them about their behaviour. “Remember, to say hello quietly and ask them if they’d like to play with you.”
✔✔ Rehearse: It’s useful to practise with kids how they should act in social situations. “Okay, Jeremy tell me what you will say when you go to Grandma’s. Let’s practice saying hello.”
✔✔ Revisit: Give kids feedback after the event but keep it positive and upbeat. “That was great the way you let the other kids lead the way. Your friends love it when you let them be boss.” Kids benefit from being told what works well in terms of their social behaviours, even if their attempts at being good only approximate what you are after. It takes a little time for some kids to get things right!
Effective parents are teaching parents. A lot of the lessons kids pick up from their parents are through mimicry. That’s why modeling is one of your greatest allies. They need to spend some time with you so they can pick up good manners, the
importance of sharing and other social niceties. Boys, in particular, need a little help and prompting about how to act appropriately around other kids. There are times when parents need to make sure their lessons hit home and that includes when you coach kids how to be social and consider the needs of others.
