Frank Glass

One: Lord, you have searched me,

Many: And you know me.

One: You know when I sit down;

Many: You know when I rise up.

One: You know what I am thinking;

Many: You know where I am going.

One: Where can I go from your spirit?

Many: Where can I flee from your presence?

One: If I take the wings of the morning,

Many: And settle at the limits of the sea,

One: Even there your hand shall lead me,

Many: And your right hand shall embrace me!

One: Search me, O God, and know my heart.

Many: Test me, and know my thoughts.

One: See if there is any wicked way in me,

Many: And lead me in your way everlasting.

All: Lord, teach us to walk along your path of life and love.

‘Zizania Mania, Or, When Bad Things Happen In Good Soil’

Nancy Meyers

Our God, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kin-dom come,

thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily

bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass

against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kin-dom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Genesis 28:10-22 - Jacob’s Dream at Bethel 10 Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. 11 Coming to a certain place, Jacob stayed there

for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, Jacob put it under

his head and lay down in that place. 12 And Jacob dreamed that there was a ladder[a] set up on

the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and

descending on it. 13 And the LORD stood beside Jacob and said, “I am the LORD, the God of

Abraham and Sarah your ancestors and the God of Isaac and Rebecca; the land on which you

lie I will give to you and to your offspring; 14 and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth,

and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and

all the families of the earth shall be blessed[c] in you and blessed by your offspring. 15 Know that I

am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not

leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

16 Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the LORD is in this place—and I did not

know it!” 17 And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than

the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head and

set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. 19 He called that place Bethel;[d] but the name

of the city was Luz at the first. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and will

keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, 21 so that I

come again to my ancestors’ house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God, 22 and this stone,

which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house; and of all that you give me I will surely

give one-tenth to you.”

Matthew 13:24-30 - The Parable of Weeds among the Wheat

24 Jesus put before them another parable: “The kin-dom of heaven may be compared to

someone who sowed good seed in a field; 25 but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came

and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. 26 So when the plants came up and

bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. 27 And the servants of the farmer came and said,

‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come

from?’ 28 The farmer answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants asked, ‘Then do you

want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But the farmer replied, ‘No; for in gathering the weeds you

would uproot the wheat along with them. 30 Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and

at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be

burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’”
