II. Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP)

A. Definition

The Small Form-factor Pluggable is a small transceiver that is plugged into a switch’s SFP port

and is connected to Fiber Channel and Gigabit Ethernet optical fibers at the other end. The SFP

superseded the GBIC or the Gigabit Interface Converter, hence SFP is also called as mini-GBIC

due to its size. Selecting the appropriate SFP module, the same electrical port on the switch can

connect to fibers of different types (multimode or single mode) and different wavelengths.

The SFP translates the electrical signals to optical signals and vice-versa. SFP modules are hot

swappable and holds information for the switch.

B. Types of SFP

Combo SFP Ports

These ports are paired with Ethernet ports. If an SFP transceiver plugs into SFP port 24, the

Ethernet port 24 is disabled.

XFP and SFP+ for 10 Gigabits

XFP transceivers were the pioneers in handling 10 Gigabit Ethernet optical lines. SFP was only

able to support up to 4.25 Gbps. As a result, SFP+ was made. It was the same module size as

SFP but required more circuitry to handle 10 Gbps. Hence, SFP+ ports are mostly in plug-in

cards for servers and enterprise switches.

SFP+ and XFP Modules

SFP Gigabit Ethernet and SFP+ 10 Gigabit Ethernet transceivers are the same size.

Cisco offers a range of Fast Ethernet SFP Interface Converters. The product portfolio includes

100BASE-FX, 100BASE-LX, and 100BASE-BX SFPs.

Al Kevin Tan:Ako na bahala mag-edit kani Niel. Papara-phrase ko pa man ni atchan. Ang gibuhon mo nalang pagnatapos mo na si Switch List, hanapan mo na itong 2 switches.Thanks.
Page 27: ListofAvailableCiscoSwitchesintheMarket (1).docx

27

100BASE-FX: SFP operates on ordinary multi-mode fiber optic link spans of up to 2km in

length.

100BASE-LX: SFP operates on ordinary single-mode fiber optic link spans of up to 10km in

length.

100BASE-BX: SFP operates on ordinary single-mode SINGLE STRAND fiber optic link spans

of up to 10km in length. A pair of a 100BASE-BX-D and a 100BASE-BX-U SFP is needed for

the single strand deployment.

Cisco offers two different types of 100M SFP:

100M SFP for Fast Ethernet (FE) SFP Port. The SFP product name contains a "FE".

100M SFP for Gigabit Ethernet (GE) SFP Port. The SFP product name contains a "GE".

Cisco offers a range of GBIC transceivers and Small Form-factor Pluggables (SFP) transceivers

for Gigabit Ethernet and Fiber Channel applications. These small, modular optical interface

transceivers offer a convenient and cost effective solution for the adoption of Gigabit Ethernet

and Fiber Channel in data center, campus, metropolitan area access and ring networks, and

storage area networks.

The industry-standard Cisco® Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) Gigabit Interface Converter is

a hot-swappable input/output device that plugs into a Gigabit Ethernet port or slot, linking the

port with the network. SFPs can be used and interchanged on a wide variety of Cisco products

and can be intermixed in combinations of 1000BASE-T, 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX/LH,

1000BASE-EX, 1000BASE-ZX, or 1000BASE-BX10-D/U on a port-by-port basis.

1000BASE-T SFP for Copper Networks

The 1000BASE-T SFP operates on standard Category 5 unshielded twisted pair copper cabling

of up to 100m (328 ft) link length. Cisco 1000BASE-T SFP modules support 10/100/1000

autonegotiation and Auto MDI/MDIX.

1000BASE-SX SFP for Multimode Fiber Only

Page 28: ListofAvailableCiscoSwitchesintheMarket (1).docx

28

The 1000BASE-SX SFP, compatible with the IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-SX standard, operates on

legacy 50 μm multimode fiber links up to 550 m and on 62.5 μm Fiber Distributed Data Interface

(FDDI)-grade multimode fibers up to 220 m. It can support up to 1km over laser-optimized 50

μm multimode fiber cable.

1000BASE-LX/LH SFP for Both Multimode and Single-Mode Fibers

The 1000BASE-LX/LH SFP, compatible with the IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-LX standard,

operates on standard single-mode fiber-optic link spans of up to 10 km and up to 550 m on any

multimode fibers. When used over legacy multimode fiber type, the transmitter should be

coupled through a mode conditioning patch cable.

1000BASE-EX SFP for Long-Reach Single-Mode Fibers

The 1000BASE-EX SFP operates on standard single-mode fiber-optic link spans of up to 40 km

in length. A 5-dB inline optical attenuator should be inserted between the fiber-optic cable and

the receiving port on the SFP at each end of the link for back-to-back connectivity.

1000BASE-ZX SFP for Long-Reach Single-Mode Fibers

The 1000BASE-ZX SFP operates on standard single-mode fiber-optic link spans of up to

approximately 70 km in length. The SFP provides an optical link budget of 21 dB, but the

precise link span length depends on multiple factors such as fiber quality, number of splices, and

connectors.

When shorter distances of single-mode fiber (SMF) are used, it might be necessary to insert an

inline optical attenuator in the link to avoid overloading the receiver. A 10-dB inline optical

attenuator should be inserted between the fiber-optic cable plant and the receiving port on the

SFP at each end of the link whenever the fiber-optic cable span loss is less than 8 dB.

1000BASE-BX10-D and 1000BASE-BX10-U SFP for Single-Fiber Bidirectional

Applications

Page 29: ListofAvailableCiscoSwitchesintheMarket (1).docx

The 1000BASE-BX-D and 1000BASE-BX-U SFPs, compatible with the IEEE 802.3ah

1000BASE-BX10-D and 1000BASE-BX10-U standards, operate on a single strand of standard

SMF.

A 1000BASE-BX10-D device is always connected to a 1000BASE-BX10-U device with a single

strand of standard SMF with an operating transmission range up to 10 km.

The communication over a single strand of fiber is achieved by separating the transmission

wavelength of the two devices as depicted in Figure 3: 1000BASE-BX10-D transmits a 1490-nm

channel and receives a 1310-nm signal, whereas 1000BASE-BX10-U transmits at a 1310-nm

wavelength and receives a 1490-nm signal.

The GLC-BX-D and GLC-BX-U SFPs also support digital optical monitoring (DOM) functions

according to the industry-standard SFF-8472 multisource agreement (MSA). This feature gives

the end user the ability to monitor real-time parameters of the SFP, such as optical output power,

optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage.

2-channel 1000BASE-BX10-D for Single-Fiber Bidirectional Applications

The 2-channel 1000BASE-BX-D SFP module, also known as Compact SFP, integrates two IEEE

802.3ah 1000BASE-BX10-D interfaces in one SFP module. The GLC-2BX-D is always

connected to two 1000BASE-BX10-U interfaces over two single strands of standard SMF with

an operating transmission range up to 10km.

GLC-2BX-D is designed to connect to any standard-based

C. Connectors and Cabling

Connectors include the following:

• Dual LC/PC connector (1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX/LH, 1000BASE-EX and 1000BASE-

ZX)

• Single LC/PC connector (1000BASE-BX-D and 1000BASE-BX-U)

• RJ-45 connector (1000BASE-T)

D. History

Designers were faced with a problem on how to design a uniform platform supporting multiple

mediums. As a result, pluggable form factors were created.

The key factors of Fiber channel transport have been reliability, availability and service-ability.

(RAS)

The pluggables started with the GBIC from 1995. Gigabit Interface Converter was accepted in

1999. It became a valuable option for Fiber connections. Soon, some manufacturers produced

Page 31: ListofAvailableCiscoSwitchesintheMarket (1).docx

31

small form factors. But they were not pluggable. They had to be soldered into the board which

limited ease of use, interchangeability and in-field repair. This did not meet the needs of RAS.

The GBIC had some limitation as its speed peaked at 2.125Gb/s data rate. It was also large in

size. Industry standards pushed the creation of faster and high density modules. SFP was then

born.

SFP was able to reach 4.25Gb/s and reduced in size which is approximately half of GBIC.

A sliglhtly improved version of SFP came along and was known SFP+. It improved in terms of

its 10Gb/s optical transport speed and a slightly improved SFP housing to dissipate more heat.
