Call for CAB profilers LIMERICK needs more than two CAB profilers, according to Deputy Kieran O’Donnell who attended a recent meet- ing of the Joint Policing Committee. The Fine Gael deputy called for a full unit of CAB to be properly resourced in the city to tackle gangland crimi- nals. Past and present in southside calendar By DONAL O’REGAN A GROUP of Southside women have captured every- thing good about their community in a new calendar and DVD. The Southside Women’s Group have 28 members and they all helped put the calendar and DVD together, which is launched this week Project worker Brid Lyons said that at the start of the project the ladies were talking about the film Calendar Girls and how they couldn’t do that. “And a couple of months later here they are with their very own calendar and DVD,” said Ms Lyons. The project, which was run from Southill Family Resource Centre, started in September. The ladies, who are mainly from Southill, were helped by professional photogra- pher Pat Mullins at the beginning, but they were soon out on their own. “He taught the women to capture not only the outer images of photog- raphy but also an under- standing of inner-self and self-identity,” explained Brid. “They took photo- graphs of their commu- nity and themselves, and combined those with pic- tures from the past,” she added. “The calendar and DVD is called Present and Past and because the photos were so good, the group decided to go one step further and make a DVD. It contains footage of new and old Southill, and of people in their community. However, the women, who were in their mid- twenties to forties, learned a lot more than just how to take a good photograph. “It was a very success- ful project not only for the quality of the photo- graphs but because of the bonding between the women. They gelled as a group. It really helped to build confidence,” said Ms Lyons. “It was a great achieve- ment by all the women and has really boosted community spirit,” she added. The calendar and DVD is being sold as a package and costs €10. The pro- ceeds go to the Southside Domestic Abuse Project and they’re are available from the Southill Family Resource Centre. “It is fitting that by their efforts the Southside Women's Group will be helping other women to emerge from isolation and over- come disadvantage,” said Ms Lyons. And she stresses that the Southside Women’s Group is open to every- one. “If you have nothing to do and would like to get involved just give us a ring at 061- 440250 at Southill Family Resource Centre,” she concludes. At the launch of the Southside Women's Group 2009 Calendar were: Anne Lawlor, Anne Kinsella, Breda McNamara, Mabel Mescall and Mary Frawley (LL) Liz Price and Mary Timmons, Limerick Womens Network and Pat Mullins at the launch
