The partnership, formed alongside 13 others in 2009 by Durham County Council, aims to engage with residents on a variety of local issues and priorities and look at ways to tackle these to ultimately make the area a nicer place to live. The AAP has a range of partners, elected members and public representatives on its board and they meet at least every two months. Being a Forum member is your chance to have a say on local issues and you will also be kept up to date with the AAP and the various projects it supports. Angelina Maddison, AAP coordinator, said, “We are always looking to expand our forum membership and would urge anyone who lives or works in the area to get in touch. Join in the AAP revolution “The AAP gives local people the opportunity to get involved in local activities and consultation. It also gives them a voice. “We are committed to listening to people and acting on their views. Jack Watson, president of Shildon Railway Cricket Club, died last Saturday morning in Darlington Memorial Hospital after taking ill at his home in Shildon. Jack, who was aged 90, was a well-known figure around the country due to his remarkable involvement in sport. He was recruitment officer for Middlesbrough F.C. and was working right up until the day he died. The football club held a minute’s applause before Sunday’s Champion-ship game against Leeds United, with players and staff wearing black armbands as a mark of respect. Flags at the Riverside were flown at half-mast. Mr. Watson had been chief scout at Middlesbrough for many years and became a close friend of Tony Mowbray, the current manager, with whom he also worked at Hibernian, West Bromich Albion and Celtic football clubs. Jack was five times caretaker manager of

Club president, Jack Watson

Darlington F.C. and also worked for Carlisle United, Hartlepool and Sunderland. He had been an outstand-ing cricketer, represent-ing the Minor Counties, Durham and Northumber-land. He was professional at eight different clubs, and in 1955 became the first professional at Shildon British Rail Cricket Club, with whom he maintained a close connection, being club president for the past several years. He was also president of the Readers

Durham County Cricket League.“Jack’s death has deeply saddened everyone at the club and our condolences go to his son Ian and all his family and friends,” said club chairman John Brennan. “Jack regularly attended our monthly committee meetings, matches and coaching sessions. He readily offered good advice and his knowledge and expertise has been invaluable in assisting many people. He will be greatly missed.”

Area loses three distinguished stalwarts

Jack with Middlesbrough Manager Tony Mowbray.

The funeral of Eldon Parish Councillor, George Pennington took place on Thursday 15th March in Eldon. George died from septicaemia on Wednesday 7th March after a battle with cancer. He was 69.The funeral cortege paused in the grounds of Eldon Community Centre, which George was almost single-handedly responsi-ble for providing for the village. On realising that there was nothing to occupy his young family, George set about planning for a community centre. He designed the building, successfully applied for funding and was there daily to monitor progress as the community centre rose up. The centre will celebrate its third birthday this summer. His wife, Diane, said that the community centre was his passion, “He was very driven and would make sure everything was how he wanted it. He had a

Parish Councillor, George Pennington

room in the house that was full of plans and informa-tion.”Cllr Pennington was chairman of Eldon Parish Council. He worked most of his life as an engineer for an air-conditioning company and was a keen musician, playing both saxophone and clarinet in many venues across the region. Cllr Penninton’s death, said his wife, “was a shock. George was my rock and he will be missed.”He is survived by his widow, four sons Paul, Wayne, Craig and Steven, and twelve grandchildren.

The death has been announced of George Romaines, aged 82. George, once described as ‘the most popular man in the North East’ made his fame on the live, five-days-a-week ‘The One O’Clock Show’ on Tyne Tees Television. The programme ran for five years and 1,098 shows between 1959 and 1964. Before television fame, George was a Shildon Wagon Works electri-cian. He was educated at Timothy Hackworth Junior School and played cricket for Shildon British Railways alongside Jack Watson, who has also passed away, (see below). Throughout his fame he remained a Shildon man, living in the town all his life. After the One O’Clock Show, George remained at Tyne Tess Television as an executive for the next twenty years, before becoming a fund raising director for the Teesside Hospice. He retired with his wife Freda, who died last year. George was also president of Bishop Auckland Cricket Club, which he described as “a great honour, like a year at the Palladium.” He is survived by his three sons, Paul, Mark and Simon.

Driver disqualifiedWilliam Bake, of Office Row, Eldon was disqualified from driving for sixteen months and fined a total of £250, including costs, when he pleaded guilty to driving whilst over the legally permitted level of alcohol. The court heard that at around 11pm on the night of 29th February police routinely stopped a Skoda Felicia in Pasture Row, Eldon. Bake was fully cooperative

throughout proceedings and was found to have 86 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. In mitigation it was stated that the 26 year-old had been to work but had called in at his local pub for a drink on the way home and had not intended to stay for long. However, there had been a football match on television and he had become engaged in conversation with friends. Bake then foolishly

decided to drive the short distance home, as he feared that his van may be stolen or vandalised if left in the car park behind the pub. The District Judge at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court departed slightly from the sentencing guidelines, treating the defendant as a man of good character, realising the impact a driving disquali-fication would have on the defendant’s job and family.

Warrants for arrests issued

The District Judge at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court took a dim view when two defendants failed to answer bail and arrive at court to face charges as required and he issued warrants, without bail, for the pair to be arrested.Paul Ronald Peter Egglestone, aged 36 of Front Row, Eldon, faces a charge that on 25th February in Bishop Auckland, he stole battery cells, of unknown value, belonging to Rushlift. Before issuing a warrant

for his arrest, the court heard that Egglestone has previous convictions for failure to surrender to bail. Jonjo Yorke, aged 18 years of Maple Avenue, Shildon, faces a charge that on the 28th February in Darlington, he used threat-ening words and behaviour to cause harassment, alarm and distress. He too failed to attend the court and in the absence of an explanation, a warrant for his arrest was issued, without bail, in order to secure his attendance.

Mark Anthony Nixon, of Jubilee Road, Shildon, had his driving licence endorsed, was handed a one year disqualifica-tion from driving and was sentenced to 8 weeks imprisonment when he was found guilty of driving whilst disqualified recently. The 25 year-old was stopped routinely on the

Custody for Shildon manShildon by-pass whilst driving a Vauxhall Corsa at around 11am on 27th February. Nixon pleaded guilty to driving whilst disquali-fied and to being without third party insurance. The court heard that the defendant had seven previous convictions for driving whilst disqualified

The following cases were due before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe recently. Kevin Ian Graydon Chapman, of Waskerley Grove, Bishop Auckland, faces charges of assault and criminal damage arising out of an incident in Shildon on 4th February. The 25 year-old faces a further charge of committing an offence whilst subject to a 12

Due in courtmonths conditional discharge which was imposed by the court on 25th January. Jamie Gray, aged 28 years of West View, Meadowfield, faces a charge of assaulting a young woman in Shildon, on 1st March. Pre-hearing conditions state that the defendant must not contact his victim and that he may only have contact with his child via a third person.

and that Nixon was also subject to a suspended sentence for breaching a Sexual Offenders’ Order. Nixon had admitted that his actions were stupid. The District Judge, however, felt that the defendant had taken little notice of his previous convictions or suspended sentence and therefore imposed custody.

Dear Editor,

In regard to last letter by Cllr M Burdess (Crier week ending 09/03/2012). With the letters now being sent to the Town crier from Cllr Burdess, other parties and myself we are in danger of ending up with a game of “Political ping pong”. Therefore, unless Cllr Burdess has something positive and factual to say in reply I will rest my case in this letter.

I’m still waiting for a reply to the questions/points that I raised in my last letter. If Cllr Burdess is going to “tell the truth” to endear him to the electorate, then please let us have the truth! It’s the oldest trick in the political book, trying to answer a question that has been raised by another question in reply! This only avoids answering the real issue that has been raised. As I have stated in my previous letter, as far as I’m concerned, to the best of our ability we have spent the Town Council’s money wisely! If Cllr Burdess thinks we have “wasted and squandered” the town’s money then he must be honest and let the electorate know where! We can then try and improve things and save money for the electorate. After all, as Cllr Burdess states “Shildon comes first”

In view of this I now repeat the questions/points that I put to you in my last letter, this being;a. On what have the Independents (aided by Liberal Democrats in his opinion) wasted and squandered the Town Council’s money? - Please name them. b. In what respect have we let the people of Shildon down? c. I asked if the 73 pence in the pound Shildon was paying was value for money considering the services that we now receive from Labour Controlled Durham County Council. If, Cllr Burdess, you have received good education, then that is a far point, but does that still justify 73 pence in the pound we pay for the services that Shildon now receives?

In the latest letter Cllr Burdess states that we are withdrawing support to local groups from the Town Council. Name them - I’m very interested to know who they are.

In regard to his statement that we pay one of the highest council taxes in the Country, Cllr Burdess has to remember that when Independents took over the running of the Town Council in May 2003, we inherited from the Labour Controlled Town Council a Council tax that was already one of the highest council taxes or indeed if not the highest in the country. We have been fighting to have it reduced ever since! So when Cllr Burdess states that Independents are responsible for this, please remember who we inherited the problem from in the first place.

With regard to seeing “no improvements” in the Town. Perhaps Cllr Burdess has missed the improvements to Shildon Civic Hall? May I also suggest that he looks at the new play area in Hackworth Park, the refurbished tennis courts, the provision of additional lighting to make the Park a safer place for all to enjoy, the refurbishment of the Council Offices to provide office accommodation for rent etc. These are examples of the many improvements that the Independents have made in Shildon.

Yours faithfully,

Cllr S.C Bird, Deputy Leader, Shildon Town Council.

The North East region certainly did itself proud with its performances over the ten events on offer at the UK Inter Counties Cross Country Champion-ships, held at Cofton Park, Birmingham on Saturday 10th March. The athletes trained by Dave Matthews at Shildon R & AC proved to be well up there with some of the big names. The McCain Cross Country challenge is televised by Sky Sport and runners were delighted to be selected to represent the North East following their recent cross country performances. The weather was unsea-sonably warm for the time of year, which gave the runners an added element of difficulty many were not

expecting. The region’s Under 17 Men’s squad just missed out on team medals, finishing fourth in their 6k event, with Michael Bleasby coming home in 29th place with 19.49.The under 13 girls’ team ran an equally exciting race as the four scoring runners placed within the top 100 of 294, coming 10th out of 39 teams. Lizzie Cramb ran well to achieve 12.54, making her debut at this level of competition. The under 15 girls with a 7th team place finish saw Rosie Findlay placed 182nd with 18.28 over the 4k course. The under 17 girls weren’t about to let the boys take all the credit as they impressed with an 8th place out of 37 teams. Amy

Etherington led the North East girls in 30th, Zoe Hewitson followed nine seconds later in 36th. The under 20 women placed 9th out of 22 teams with Lizzie Wood completing the 8K in 26.23. Shildon Running & Athletic Club is open to anyone from the age of 8 upwards. If anyone is interested in joining the club please come along for a free try-out session. Opportunities for local triathletes to train will receive a big boost as a dedicated new club is launched in Aycliffe at the end of this month. Triathlon, which combines swimming, cycling and running, is attracting increasing interest as media coverage of this relatively young sport grows. A group of local triath-letes are now launching a new club dedicated to the needs of local enthusiasts of the sport.Club founder, Andrew Sedgwick, commented, “Over the last few months a number of local people have expressed interest in forming a local club, so we know there is real demand among local people.“Support from a number of triathlon retailers and promoters means that we should be able to provide

a strong programme of advice, support and structured training.”The club plans to hold weekly swimming, cycling and running training sessions and work in partnership with Aycliffe Running Club, Sedgefield 75 Swimming Club and Durham County Council Sports Development staff to deliver the highest quality sessions possible. The club will host its official launch night at Aycliffe Leisure Centre on Saturday 31st March from 6pm to 8pm, when there will be a club presentation, displays of training equipment and information about the club training sessions. Those interested in attending the launch night or wanting more informa-tion about membership can email Vicky Howse at [email protected].
