It is really important to hear how your child is settling in at school, particularly at the beginning of each school year. Some of the positive comments have been just lovely to hear: “My child just loves coming to school each day” “My child loves telling me what his teacher is wearing each day, they just love their teacher” “Thank you for the beautiful teachers you have given my children” We all know the most important part of a child’s education is the teacher who stands in front of them each day. We have quality teachers who work really hard to know every child, how they learn, what their strengths are and what makes them engage in their learning. At Lilli Pilli PS, our children come first, they are our priority each day. We are always working on providing them with an environment that engages each and every student. Parent volunteers are very welcome at Lilli Pilli PS. We all know the great benefits of your presence at school. However, we must adhere to the DEC policy guidelines that require ALL volunteers (including Canteen helpers, sport volunteers, excursions, parent helpers in classrooms) to complete a form and supply the school with 100 points of ID. This is quite simply a step to ensure that your children are safe at school. If you intend on volunteering (even for a day), this is a requirement. You are not required to have a Working with Children Check (from the RMS) unless you are involved in a mentoring program or you are working in a one on one environment with children. If you are not sure, please contact the school and we can let you know what is required. Our learning and support teacher will be establishing a parent volunteer timetable over the next few weeks for those parents who have previously worked with our students. Please keep your eyes on our newsletter for more information. Again, what a great week we have had…We had the Sharks and the Swans visit, just to make sure Mr Paget and Mrs Fogarty are both happy!! It’s also a wonderful opportunity to teach kids to actively ask questions and openly challenge stereotypes. On Friday 8 March, Year 6 will be welcoming women from our community to come and speak and tell us a little bit about themselves. Participants are invited to our school (3-6 site) from 10.00am - 11.15am to speak informally to small groups of Year 6 students. I am happy to meet you prior to the date to outline the types of questions that may be asked and to give you some additional guidelines to help you prepare. Anne Martyn

ROAD SAFETY INFORMATION

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR CHILDREN’S SAFETY WHEN THEY ARE TRAVELLING TO AND FROM SCHOOL.

Walk safelyAlways hold your children’s hands – when walking on the footpath, in the car park and when crossing the road – until they are at least 8 years old.

When your children are between 8 and 10 years old, supervise them very closely when they are near traffic and crossing the road.

When you decide to let your children over 10 years old walk to and from school by themselves, plan the journey together. Practise being a safe pedestrian by:

■ keeping to the left of the footpath ■ being aware of vehicles coming in and out of driveways ■ not being distracted by mobile devices or by other people ■ using a safe, alternative way home in wet weather ■ showing respect to other pedestrians.

STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously look both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! is it safe to cross?

Encourage your children:

■ to always use a safe place to cross the road such as a pedestrian crossing, traffic lights or a school crossing, if available

■ to check for turning vehicles before they cross the road and driveways

■ never to assume that a driver can see them or will stop for them

■ to make eye contact with a driver so they know the driver has seen them

■ to wait till the driver has completely stopped their vehicle before they cross the road or driveway.

SYDNEY SOUTHEAST SYMPHONIC WINDS 2019

GREATER SYDNEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS ENSEMBLES www.gspsensembles.com [email protected]

2019 marks the 26th year of the Sydney Southeast Symphonic Winds ensemble (formerly known as the Sydney Region Band). Our goal is to provide advanced music education and performance opportunities for children in years 5-8 who are currently enrolled in public schools in and around the Sydney area. The band has regularly performed at leading performance venues including the Sydney Opera House, Angel Place, Sydney Town Hall, Parliament House and the Sydney Entertainment Centre, also representing the Department of Education at official events throughout Sydney. We hold a yearly camp where the students work with experienced conductors and tutors, and regular rehearsals are held at Caringbah North Public School. We also provide music teachers with professional development opportunities both as a part of the camp as well as through rehearsals and auditions. In 2019 we will not only be selecting a large ensemble of 100+ young musicians, but also drawing from that group a smaller select ensemble and featured soloists for certain events. Please see the calendar for more information. Positions will be allocated via the audition process at the beginning of term 2. WHO CAN APPLY? Students in year 5, 6, 7 or 8 who are enrolled in a Public School located in the Sydney area. AUDITIONS Auditions will be held between May 3-10 (exact dates TBA) at Caringbah North PS, Sylvania Heights PS and Brighton-Le-Sands PS. For more information regarding auditions please see the Audition Requirements information available on our website www.gspsensembles.com CAMP The 2019 camp will be held from Monday 3rd – Wednesday 5th June at The Tops Conference Centre. FEES Fees for 2019 total $570. These fees pay for camp accommodation/meals/activities, music, expert tuition, administration, auditions, supervision and band polo shirt (if required). REHEARSAL & PERFORMANCE DATES Please see the draft calendar on our website for the 2019 schedule. HOW TO APPLY: Teachers, conductors and tutors are to provide information and dates to suitable students. Applications are to be made online at www.gspsensembles.com. Please ensure that all information is read carefully prior to applying. Times and dates for auditions will be emailed after the closing date (if you haven’t received information before Monday 29th April, please let us know). You will likely be grouped in similar times with others from your school, with the exception of percussionists (see Audition Requirements for info). An attempt will be made to honour special requests for audition allocations.

CLOSING DATE: Friday 12th April, 2019

AUDITION INFORMATION

& CALENDAR 2019

GREATER SYDNEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS ENSEMBLES www.gspsensembles.com [email protected]

Auditions for 2019 will be held in Week 1 & 2, Term 2 between Friday 3rd – Friday 10th May. Caringbah North PS, Sylvania Heights PS and Brighton-Le-Sands PS will be hosting all auditions for 2019. Students will be allocated a time and day following the close of applications on Friday 12th April. If no information has been received by Monday 29th April regarding audition allocation please contact us. Please note that auditions may be scheduled before, during or after school hours.

Throughout the audition process this year we will not only be selecting members of the full 100+ piece ensemble, but also a smaller ensemble for certain events (drawn from the main ensemble) and a number of possible featured soloists. On the day of the audition, students will be required to:

• Perform one short unaccompanied piece (or an excerpt from a longer piece) between 1-2 minutes long, with a focus on the players’ musicality and technique. Special attention should be paid to

phrasing, articulation and dynamic contrast. • Play one major, minor or chromatic scale. The scale should demonstrate as much of the students’

playing range as possible, and be played “all tongued” or “all slurred”. • Play a short passage of sight reading. The piece will be different for all instruments and will reflect

the level of music to be played in this year’s ensemble.

All students will need to bring is their instrument, music and a smile ☺

** SPECIAL INFORMATION FOR PERCUSSIONISTS ** The percussion audition process is slightly different in that it will be an open audition, with all applicants attending at the same time. They will need to demonstrate 4 styles (Rock, Swing, Latin & March) as well as auxiliary and mallet ability if studied. Creativity is greatly encouraged within the various beat patterns. These auditions will be held on Monday 6th May at CNPS from 5pm.
