To my shock, before my eyes, in very bold letters (so it seemed in my mind) were the words “Senior Discount Thursday”. FUJINKAI NEWSOur Food Fair in May had a profit

of approximately $8200. This total will increase as surplus groceries are sold. It is encouraging to see the revenue from the Food Fair increase every year. This is all due to everyone’s help and efforts.

Once our Food Fair was over, plans were made for the Garage Sale which was on June 15. Fortunately, many items had been cleaned and priced before being stored, so the pricing was not a major task. We had a fantastic amount of donations over the past year and managed to make over $750. In addition, table rentals raised $150. Amazingly, number of helpers on Saturday was more than adequate. Over the next several months, more garage sales will be held as storage space will be limited as the temple is renovated.

San Francisco will be the destination for several temple members during the long weekend in September as six of us will attend the World Buddhist Women’s Convention. Rev. Ikuta, Noriko Ikuta, Misaye Hamaura, Mary Hirose, Maya Whittier, Shinobu Fukakusa and Hiroko Yoshihara will be going.

Some of the proceeds from the sale of Krave jerky will help subsidize part of the expenses. Thanks to Annette!

Moe No Kai Go Keiko

Our last Moe No Kai gathering before the summer was held on Thursday, June 20th. We played a little game to stimulate our brain and we also did sitting stretching exercises to relax our muscles. Later in the morning, we had a lovely annual luncheon. It is always nice to see people enjoy their meals with joy and appreciation. Thank you to all the seniors and volunteers for attending and planning Moe No Kai every month. Please stay healthy and have a wonderful summer and see you again on Thursday, Sept. 26th at 10am.

Kids’ Sangha NewsDharma School will now be called Kids’ Sangha.Thank you for everyone who contributed to our bake

table at the Spring Food Fair. Congratulations to Patty Yodogawa, the winner of the 50/50 Draw.

Obon odori practices are being held on Monday and Friday evenings at 7:00 pm to prepare for our Obon Festival on Saturday, July 27. Obon service will be on Sunday, July 28.

Kids’ Sangha will commence with a pancake breakfast on September 15 at 9:30 am. Have a great summer and keep safe!

Notice from TempleOn Wednesday, June 5th, our temple

experienced an emergency situation involving our fire alarm monitoring panel. The fire alarm monitoring panel is an electronic panel which regulates the smoke detectors and fire alarms in the

temple. During the annual fire alarm inspection, the fire department found that the monitoring panel was faulty, and we were notified that it needed to be fixed immediately. Until such time, we were told that we would have to implement a 24/7 manual surveillance of the property with someone here 24 hours a day to monitor the temple.

At first the alarm monitoring specialists tried replacing the faulty pieces of the panel, however, due to the age of the panel some of the replacement pieces no longer existed and, in the end, they ended up replacing the whole panel. A process which took just over two weeks to complete.

During this period, the temple hired a security company to have a security guard come from 6 pm to 6 am to monitor the place. During the daytime volunteers came on rotating shifts to ensure someone was monitoring all day long.

A special thank you to all of the volunteers who took turns coming in from 6 am until 6 pm to help monitor the temple.

SHOTSUKI DATE FOR SEPTEMBERReminder that the Shotsuki date for September is on

Sunday, September 8th. Rev. Ikuta will be away during the Labour Day Weekend attending the World Buddhist Women’s Convention in San Francisco, USA.

Thank you for your understanding.

Flowers for the HondoAs you are aware, the Altar (Naijin) represents “the

Residence” of Amida Buddha, the Land of Nirvana or the Realm of Enlightenment. Here we find three key adornments – the flowers, the candle and incense. Each is very symbolic in understanding Buddhism. The Flowers, reflect the Impermanence of Life. The candle Light allows us to see the True Nature of Life. And, the burning Incense provides the scent of the Purity of Enlightenment and the smoke gives us the insight into the Transiency of Life.

All three adornments allow us to awaken to the Ultimate Truth of Wisdom and Compassion of the Buddha. This principle applies to all Buddhist shrines.

The Altar is cleaned and the adornments are updated regularly. The flowers, that are usually changed weekly, provide a sense of beauty and serenity. In fact, some miss them if they are not on display. To maintain this practice, however, has been expensive as the costs have risen over the last number of years. The latest weekly purchase was $100.00. Although the purchases include a 10% reduction at our supplier, they are becoming quite prohibitive.

How do we pay for the flowers? The monies come from the Temple treasury. Is there, however, another way to allay these costs? The approach approved by the Board is to seek Monetary Donations from the Dharma followers and friends. These donations will allow us to continue to enhance the radiance of the Altar. We are seeking your financial assistance. Whatever amount will help! This is the special request.

Donations will be gratefully received and tax receipts will be issued. For more information one may contact me at 604 765 7710. Thank you for understanding and your time in reading this letter.

Gratefully, Roy Akune

Obon 2019 is quickly approaching and we are honoured to have Rev. Yoshimichi Ouchi from the Toronto Buddhist Church join us for the weekend.

Reverend Yoshimichi Ouchi was born in Oita prefecture, Japan. He grew up in a family Temple, where his Grandfather and Father were Ministers. His family goes back 25 generations in the family temple. Buddhism and serving the Temple has been a life-long practice for Reverend Yoshi.

Reverend Yoshi studied religion, with a focus on Buddhism, at Ryukoku University in Kyoto and Shiga. After graduating from Ryukoku University, he went to Chuo Bukkyo Gakuin (Central Buddhist Academy), a part of Nishi Hongwanji-temple, to study the Teaching of the Buddha and Shinran-Shonin who was the founder of our sect in Kyoto.

Between February 27th, 2011 and May 2nd, 2016 Reverend Yoshi completed three levels of ordination: Tokudo, Kyoshi and Tokubetu Homuin Shikaku. During this period, he also volunteered at a temple in Osaka and took on the duties of a Minister for two years.

After receiving his ordinations, Reverend Yoshi spent a year at Gonshiki Shidousho where he trained in chanting and studied important Buddhist rituals. On April 15th, 2016 he was assigned to the Toronto Buddhist Church. Rev. Yoshi is the youngest minister within our Canadian Kyodan.

Please help us welcome Rev. Yoshi for our Obon Weekend.

2019 Vancouver Island Obon TourAug. 9 – 11, 2019

Preparations are underway for the BC Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples Federation sponsored Vancouver Island Obon Cemetery Tour which will take place on the weekend of August 9 – 11, 2019.

Although we will not be chartering a bus this year, we still have plans for visiting the cemeteries in Cumberland, Port Alberni, Nanaimo, Chimainus, Duncan and Victoria.

If you would like to spend a memorable weekend on Vancouver Island please join us on this spiritual journey.

Detailed schedule as well as Application Forms are available through Rev. Ikuta or the temple office. [email protected] or call the temple office

British Columbia Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples Federation Convention

Thanks to Dennis Shikaze, Naomi Shikaze’s brother, it looks like we are going to be able to charter a 56 seat coach bus for the BCJSBTF convention taking place in Kamloops from Sept. 27-29, 2019.

On September 27th, Rev. Grant is making arrangements to have pick up points at three stops, one at our temple (10:00 am), the second stop on the way at the Highway 17 and Bridgeview Dr. in Surrey (11:00 am at the Tim Horton’s) and the third at the Tim Horton’s near the Fraser Valley Buddhist Temple (12:00 noon). With this schedule, we should be arriving in Kamloops by 4:00 or 5:00 pm. We are still working on the price per person, but we are expecting a subsidy from the BCJSBTF and will let you know once we find out the final price.

The convention speakers will be Dr. Kenneth Tanaka, renowned Buddhist speaker and author of “Ocean: an introduction to Jodo-Shinshu Buddhism in America”. Dr. Tanaka was the quest speaker for last year’s convention held also in the Interior at Vernon. His talk was so inspiring that the organizing committee decided to invite him again this year. Everyone who attended last year’s convention thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and you will surely not want to pass up on this opportunity to listen to Dr. Tanaka’s talk.

For those interested in attending this year’s convention, please contact Jeanne Ryan (604) 230-8787 for information. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Holiday Inn Suites in Kamloops with special rates in effect until August 30, 2019, so please register your name as soon as possible.

There are registration forms available at the temple.

RAFFLE TICKET NOTICEBCJSBTF Raffle tickets have been sent out in the mail.

Every year our provincial body, the BC Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples Federation have been holding a raffle ticket draw with proceeds going to help fund the Annual Post Secondary Education Scholarship. The scholarship has helped numerous individuals with their education. Recipients of the scholarship are selected by the Scholarship committee and their names are announced at the BCJSBTF Convention which is held in September.

5th Annual BC Buddhist Festival at Queen Elizabeth Park

On Saturday, June 8th, Buddhists from 15 different countries and 52 organizations from across the lower mainland came to the Queen Elizabeth Park to celebrate the 5th Annual BC Buddhist Festival. The event went on all day with booths representing various Buddhist temples and organizations from the Greater Vancouver Area.

There was a central stage where the opening ceremony took place and performances were presented throughout the day representing the many Asian cultures. Representing the Japanese culture, we had our own Jodo Shin Taiko drummers playing a couple of pieces. As well as the Satsuki Kai Dancers who also performed a couple of Buyo dances. Both performances were well received by the audience.

Rev. Grant participated as part of a panel discussion at the Sangha conference which was being held at the wedding pavilion.

(Sensei’s Senior Moment from P1.)Come to think of it, I’ll also be able to order from the

“Senior Menu” at IHOP, so perhaps all is not lost. As I muse over the passing of time, another Obon season

has come upon us. We will be holding our Obon weekend on July 27th and 28th. It’s a little later than usual due to my schedule of having to go to Japan from July 9th to the 24th. Without going into details, the Obon service is based on the Ullambana Sutra (or Urabon-kyo盂蘭盆経 in Japanese), which tells the story of Maudgalyāyana (Mokuren Sonja 目連尊者in Japanese) and his mother. The service and the “Bon Odori” dance that accompanies it are opportunities for us to get in touch with our past, expressing our true joy and gratitude for the past causes and conditions that allow us to be here today. In the introductory passage for this article, Shinran Shonin states, “When the thought of wanting to say the Nembutsu emerges decisively from deep within…” Our loved ones who we come to honor at the Obon service, are in fact our great spiritual teacher guiding us to listen to the calling voice of the Onembutsu.

Please join us for the Obon weekend, an invitation from one who is about to join the ranks of the Seniors.

A special thank you to all of the volunteers who came out to help man our booth, giving out information to the people interesting in learning more about our temple. It was wonderful to see the other denominations of Buddhism. I believe this is an important and worthwhile celebration that our temple should participate in annually.
