On behalf of City Council, I would like to extend sincere greetings to all Steveston businesses, residents and visitors. Now in its 27th year, Steveston Villager Business Directory continues to serve the Steveston community. The Villager is a publication dedicated to the promotion of Steveston businesses. It is a welcome and valuable resource for all who use it. One of Richmond’s many gems, Steveston has something to offer everyone. Visitors are often pleasantly surprised at the richness of offerings in this quaint seaside village. Both historic and picturesque, there are trails, dykes,

natural parks and gardens, and a wide selection of amenities. One can stroll along the docks, purchase fresh seafood directly off the local fishermen’s boats, enjoy the area’s fine cuisine, visit a museum, or shop the unique galleries and boutiques.

This summer, the Steveston community will once again be celebrating its annual Steveston Salmon Festival. A well loved tradition since 1945, the Steveston Salmon Festival is a wonderful opportunity for the entire community to gather and celebrate Canada’s birthday while at the same time, welcome visitors from other parts of Richmond, the Lower Mainland, and the world. Miles Kanne is the most recent addition to the team, with over 9 years in the industry. Miles got his start in Edmonton, Alberta working at Electric tattoo and Lucky Strike. With a love for japanese and traditonal tattooing, Miles puts his own illustrative fun flare into his work. Beatmerchant Record Store - the Best selection of Records, CDs & DVDsFrankie Neilson began his career as a young fresh-faced 17-year-old recording engineer at the Marquee Studios in London’ s Wardour Street which was situated behind the famous Marquee Club in Soho London’s red light district before joining Elton John’s record label DJM as Assistant A&R Manager for four years in 1974.DJM was owned and run by Beatles publisher Dick James who was also responsable for discovering Elton John and this was a great opportunity for Frankie to learn the music business from the ground up before moving to Polydor Records UK A&R Department in 1979 where he worked with such artists as Paul Weller, The Jam, Ian Dury, 60’s legend Billy Fury and his favourite group the Comsat Angels in the 80’s.“I was so proud to work for Polydor Records as it was the label in the 60’s who released albums by Jimi Hendrix, Cream and the Taste which I loved!”Starting his own label Individual Records in the mid 80’s Frankie released six 45 rpm records and two 12” records which have become collectable because nobody bought them!Next he jumped over the big pond to Toronto before locating and settling in Vancouver, in British Columbia.In 1999 Frankie started his own website www.beatmerchant.com and started selling music items through the website and on eBay where he has achieved over 750 customer recommendations, then in 2005 with the music industry in total decline he started his own record store, The Beatmerchant Specailty Record Store in Steveston Village, Richmond BC.Flying in the face of everything that has happened in the music business lately such as ipods, copying and downloads he has built a loyal and dedicated following of customers in the historic and beautiful fishing village Steveston on the mighty Fraser River in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.

Jodie BlaneyContemporary

Art

Jodie Blaney is an Active Member with the Federation of Canadian Artists and is also a member of the Richmond Artists Guild. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from UBC and attended Emily Carr University of Art & Design. She has also participated in several collage, acrylic painting and abstract art workshops. Prior to becoming an artist, Jodie spent over twelve years in the publishing field where she held positions in Vancouver and Toronto. When her son, Sam, was born in 2002, Jodie and her husband Jeff decided to head west and put down roots in Richmond, BC.

Painting mainly in acrylics, her work is characterized by a strong graphic design element, bold use of colour, and dramatic contrasts of light and dark. She often works intuitively with colour, shape and design, letting the composition form during the artistic process. Contemporary Canadian artists who have influenced her work include Nicholas Bott, Cameron Bird, Donna Baspaly, Mike Svob and Brittani Faulkes. Canadian icons who provide ongoing inspiration include Emily Carr, Lawren Harris and J.E.H. MacDonald.

ANAF 284 Opens New Unit In StevestonANAF 284 Opens New Unit In StevestonThe Army, Navy and Air Force Unit 284 club opened its new clubhouse on June 29 , 2012. Members are impressed with the spacious digs, built adjacent to a new Seniors Housing Complex on the old site at 105 - 11900 No. 1 Road. The long wait is over for club members, who have been using temporary facilities since 2009, when the old building was taken down. A long time Steveston fixture, Unit 284 celebrated its 66 anniversary this year.

Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans “ Shoulder to Shoulder ” service since 1840 Incorporated in 1917 and extended by Acts of Parliament of Canada. In 1946, thirty Steveston area veterans approached the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada to open a Veterans Club in Steveston. Now, in 2012 – you do not have to have a military service background in order to come out and help the ANAF with the community support it provides. Each year the ANAF gives thousands of dollars to community organizations. They also sponsor educational scholarships for local Richmond students to pursue their post - secondary education. If you are interested in helping, then become a member. Please drop by for a membership application.

When the new ANAF clubhouse rose from the ground, it brought with it the Maple Residence, a 144 unit seniors’ independent living facility.
