The man who led the £371 million Hindhead Tunnel project has been named in the New Year's Honours list.

Paul Arnold, Highways Agency Senior Project Manager, who lives near the site of the recently opened tunnel, has been awarded an MBE. He started his civil engineering career in 1971 in one of the Government's Road Construction Units. He then left when they were disbanded in 1980 but returned to work for the Department for Transport in February 1986 working in the South East regional office.

One of his first projects was identifying and delivering a solution to the bottleneck at the A3 in Hindhead, setting a new standard for how vital infrastructure improvements can be

delivered to protect and enhance the environment.

Haslemere’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Bank Holiday Monday, June 4, will begin with a Carnival procession. Complete with colourful floats and music, the Carnival procession will assemble at High Lane at 1pm and all entries will be judged by an independent panel. The procession will leave at 2pm via Weycombe Road and join the High Street at Penfolds Corner.

It will then wend its way down the High Street, around Haslemere Town Hall, down Lower Street, through Wey Hill and arrive at Lion Green to picnic, party and celebrate sixty years of the Queen’s reign!

To get involved, ask the Community Manager at Haslemere Town Hall for an application form – or download one from the official Diamond Jubilee website www.haslemere.com/jubilee/carnival

Haslemere’s Lythe Hill Hotel & Spa have just appointed a new executive chef. The Canadian-born, Malcolm Campbell, started his training in Vancouver, British Columbia under French-born Frederic Couton. Malcolm later joined The Fairmont Group of Hotels under executive chef Robert Lecrom. Malcolm made the move to England to gain international and Michelin-star experience which he thought would help nurture and guide him in the right direction in his career. Lythe Hill is Malcolm’s first executive chef position and he feels that it is the perfect platform for him to showcase his culinary talents.Lythe Hill hotel and spa , 01428 651 251

In our last issue of Life in Haslemere, we randomly picked Rita Clayton to win a meal for six at The Angel Midhurst. She and her husband Keith, who runs Clayton Fine Jewellery, enjoyed the family meal to celebrate their daughter Lucy’s birthday in December.

Keith has wrote to Life in Haslemere to thank us and The Angel Restaurant & Hotel.

“It was an excellent prize to win,” he reports. “Every detail of the evening was excellent. The staff were most welcoming, the atmosphere very pleasant. I’d not been into The Angel before but it certainly has an air of quality character.”Clayton Fine Jewellery, 01428 656 138, www.claytonfinejewellery.co.ukThe Angel Midhurst, 01730 812421, www.theangelmidhurst.co.ukGo to page 39 to enter this issue’s competition with a chance to win a £100 voucher to spend at Hengelo.

On Wednesday 23 May there will be an Undershaw Judicial Review at the High Court in London, in a bid to overturn the decision by Waverley Borough Council to develop the property. This date, (all but one day) marks the 153rd anniversary of Conan Doyle’s birthday.

One of Undershaw’s youngest supporters, 12 year old Harry Tennent, who lives just yards from Undershaw, has taken it upon himself to write to Benedict Cumberbatch in a bid for his support.

“When I saw the house and realised that was where Sherlock Holmes was created and where the Hound of The Baskervilles was written I instantly wanted to lend my help in any way I could,” Harry explains.

Following the campaign for the past two years, Harry’s efforts to save Undershaw have also included organising a petition of 40 signatures for Waverley Borough

Council in 2010 and a competition at his school to raise Undershaw awareness.

Venue I’ve found my perfect venue, but I’m not sure how early to book it? It is always advisable to reserve your venue as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment and to ensure that you get your choice. The Georgian House Hotel is always happy to talk through plans and ideas even in the show round stages of the planning for your special day.

PlanningI’ve just started writing my guest list, how do I keep everyone happy? Guest lists can be a very controversial topic and can often lead to many arguments. Make sure you have clear expectations from the start and make sure you include your groom on these decisions.

EntertainmentI'd like to plan the music played before the day of the wedding, do you play requests?Requests from guests are always welcome. we do supply a request sheet, which can be obtained from us in advance, this encourages you to list your favourite artists, particular tracks.

Cakes What types of cakes work best for weddings? I personally prefer sponge, but I’ve heard fruitcakes are more traditional.Sponge seems to be the most popular and different flavours can be used for each tier so everyone is happy! It can even include a fruit tier! Yours Tastefully always makes sure that every wish for the cake is incorporated including design, style and flavours.

Emma Higginson, Yours Tastefully, 01428 641971, www.yours-tastefully.co.uk

Stationery I’m not sure what wedding stationery I actually need?The typical wedding stationery includes: • DayInvitation• EveningInvitation• SavetheDateCard• Replycards • OrderofService• ThankYou• PlaceCards• Menu• TablePlan Chloe Robertson, Paperhello, 07930 137939, www.paperhello.com

Honeymoon ShouldIaskforanupgradewhen booking my holiday because it’s my honeymoon? Many resorts offer honeymoon packages that include upgrades or complimentary extras for honeymooners; however

Haslemere Travel’s ‘Little Black Book’ of worldwide contacts will always be utilised to ensure that every hotelier is aware of the arrival of the special couple and everything possible will be done to make their stay as special as possible.

Gemma Antrobus, Managing Director, Haslemere Travel, 01428 658777, www.haslemeretravel.co.uk

Food I’ve been to a few weddings and the food has been awful, what meals work best at weddings? It is always a difficult decision about what to feed your guests but I always advise couples to think about what they like and choose a menu on that basis trying to avoid anything that is to obscure that guests may find off putting! One of the Georgian's best sellers for wedding main courses is Breast of Chicken stuffed with Ricotta Cheese and wrapped in Bacon served with Pan Jus, Chefs Choice of three seasonal Vegetables and Baby Roasted New Potatoes.

Sarah Jones, Georgian House Hotel, 01428 656644, www.georgianhousehotel.com

Dress Is there anything I need to bring with me to my wedding dress fitting? After the first consultation you will need to wear the

underwear you have chosen to suit your dress and a little later on you will need the shoes.

Katherine Cusack, Cusack Couture, 01798 861365, www.katherinecusack.com

Car How many cars will I need for my wedding? Two thirds of our bookings are for two cars and this is our speciality area as we have two matching pairs of course. I would avoid mixing the old with the new, as a classic Rolls Royce followed by something modern just doesn’t have the flair of

two matching cars.

Nigel Moore, Country Style Wedding Cars ltd, 01730 816127, www.countrystylecars.co.uk

Friends What should I wear to a friend’s Wedding? Depends on how well you know the friend and when it is! However some guidelines to help anyone looking for that key

look this season. Geometric and abstract prints are overpowering the floral theme this season however floral dresses are key for any easy wearable look. A wide Palazzo trouser with a chiffon or silk blouse is a very feminine and romantic style perfect for a wedding. Key colours to watch out for are yellow, orange, coral and pinks, light blue or a more bright cobalt blue. For a more sophisticated look keep it simple with one plain colour and accessorise with a bit of sparkle or lace for a really elegant look.

Lia Snowdon, blush, 01428 656412, www.blushtrends.co.uk

FlowersHow much of my budget should I put aside for flowers? The price of flowers can vary enormously depending on the season and at peak times such as Mother's day and Valentine's day - the price also depends on your choice of flowers, your style, the number of arrangements and attendants as well as the actual date of the wedding.

Always let your florist know your budget at the start and they will use their expertise to tailor your designs to meet your needs.

Lips 1. Ensure lips are smooth and supple by

using a generous layer of lip conditioner. Exfoliate them if necessary. Allow lip conditioner to “marinate” for several minutes. Blot away excess.

2. Apply lip primer on entire mouth and slightly outside of natural lip line.

3. “Erase” the natural lip using a thin layer of foundation.

4. Using a finely sharpened red lip pencil, use short, soft strokes to create a clean edge. Make sure the lip is shaped to look even and symmetrical. Fill in the entire lip with the red pencil before layering lipstick.

5. Apply a complementary red lipstick colour using creamy or matte textures.

6. To get the edges clean and picture perfect, use a small firm, angled or flat brush with a bit of concealer to clean up smudges. Follow by lightly powdering the edges.

The Classic Eye 1. Prep the eye with a primer. Apply on the

eye lid and crease using a soft brush.2. Set the primer with a light olive/

taupe eye shadow. The lid should look like real fresh skin.

3. Look at the shape of the eye and start the line in the centre of the eye and then continue outward to the outer crease using a gel liner.

4. Take a step back and look at the shape of your first attempt and then continue to extend the liner in stages until you are satisfied. Achieve intensity by going over the liner a few times to get the liner super dark with no spaces or gaps.

5. Add a lighter eye pencil to the lower lash line to counter balance the dark liner on the top.

6. Curl lashes to add definition to the look.7. Apply a generous amount of mascara. If

you want more drama, add false lashes.8. Add a medium dark shadow to the

lower outer corner of the eyes to extend the liner look and contrast against the lighter eye pencil.

9. Apply a bit of clear brow gel to the eye brows to groom and complete the look. Extend and fill in the brow if necessary.

The day Grayshott Spa offer a romantic one night stay between Friday 10 and Tuesday 14 February, from £210 per person. Staying in a standard double room, the price includes full board from dinner on arrival until lunch on departure, a bottle of champagne and a red rose awaiting you and either a 40 minute Grayshott Valentine’s Facial or a Grayshott Classic Massage for each of you.

The mealHaslemere has lots of great restaurants to visit this Valentine’s, but If you’d prefer to avoid the crowds, why not treat your loved one to a home cooked meal. Try this Moroccan lamb recipe, courtesy of Lower Roundhurst Farm.

Serves 2350gms middle neck of organic lamb fillet (cubed)1 small onion (chopped)Half hot red chilli (chopped)1 tsp ground turmeric1 tsp ground cuminSmall handful of fresh coriander (chopped)1/2 tsp ground cinnamon300ml chicken stock1 garlic clove (chopped)Salt & freshly ground black pepper1 tbsp olive oil (approximately)1/4 tube of tomato puréeSprinkling of dark brown sugar6 prunes or 150gms sultanasFresh coriander for garnish

To MarinadePut the lamb in a bowl and place all the dry ingredients on top. Add the coriander, onions, tbsp olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper and tomato puree.Rub the mixture into the lamb until it is completely coated. Cover with cling film and marinade for 24 hours in the fridge so that all the flavours get into the meat.

Cooking the LambHeat the remaining olive oil in a large pan. Seal the lamb. Add the stock, sugar and prunes (or sultanas), cover and cook over a low heat for 45 minutes or until the lamb is tender.Remove the meat from the pan with a slotted spoon, place in a container and put aside but keep warm.Turn up the heat and reduce the remaining sauce by half. When it has a nice shine and will coat the back of the spoon, it is ready. Pour the sauce over the lamb and serve with couscous or rice.

And for dessert… This edible token of love comes from Iced Rose Cake Design. Iced Rose specialises in unique and unusual cake design and are great for adding a sweet touch to your Valentine’s.

Valentine’s Day is traditionally an occasion for the men to indulge the lady in their life with flowers,

chocolates and perhaps a meal out. Pubs are becoming a very popular

option for many, particularly with so many offering excellent food, a great atmosphere and of course not forgetting the beer. What’s interesting is that women are drinking more real ale according to a survey conducted for the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) in 2009. A total of 30% of women drinkers said they had drunk real ale, compared with 16% in 2008.

If your plans are to eat in, why not treat yourselves to some real ale direct from Langham Brewery in Lodsworth? Their beer has won numerous awards and according to joint owner, James Berrow, “we are looking at the possibility of increasing the capacity of the brewery to keep up with demand”.

St Patrick’s Day is on Saturday 17 March

this year. With no work for most of us the following day there is no excuse not to support the many events in local pubs.

Of course we should respect that the day commemorates Saint Patrick (c. AD 387–461), the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador and in Montserrat. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish around the world, especially in places such as Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand, among others. Today, St. Patrick's Day is probably the most widely celebrated saints day in the world.

Of course the Irish are joined by many other nationalities in the celebrations, particularly if it involves drinking the famous black stuff, Guinness! Until a few years ago the draught Guinness we

drank in local pubs was brewed in the UK, which many claimed meant it didn’t taste authentic. The good news is that it is now brewed back at the St James’s Gate brewery in Dublin. They should know what they are doing as the brewery was opened by Arthur Guinness in 1759!

I hope you use these events as an opportunity to support your local pub.

Simon Labrow is Chairman of Haslemere Beer Festival, which returns to Haslemere Hall on the 7-8 September.

PARKING UPDATE

Staying local can also help our environment, reducing our carbon footprint through transportation use.

The fight against parking charges is still going strong in Haslemere. Below are just some of the reasons why the Haslemere Chamber of Trade believe that Surrey’s parking proposals should be dropped:

• Thecurrentproposalshavebeen made by SCC to address the £0.5M deficit being incurred by enforcement; they were not designed to address the commuter parking problems

• Theproposalsfortheretailareas go against the findings of the recently published Government commissioned report by Mary Portas into the future of the High Street.

• SCCstatethaton-streetcharging will encourage better use of the car parks but these car parks are already close to capacity during peak periods.

• Theproposedlocationsofthemeters are in some cases a long way from the parking bays they service causing inconvenience to people ‘popping to the shops’.

See the rest of Haslemere Chamber of Trade’s objections on our website at www.lifeinhaslemere.co.uk

To fight the parking charges, send your objections to SCC with a copy to Hasle-mere town council by 10 february to:

Gardening expert Pippa Greenwood’s spring tipsIf you would like to create a new lawn from seed , as long as the soil is not very wet you can get the ground prepared now – dig the area over thoroughly, removing large stones, weeds and debris , ready for sowing from late March onwards. If the ground is wet wait until it dries out slightly.

As soon as early flowering daffodils have finished flowering remove the faded flowerheads to encourage good flowering again next year. If you notice established clumps of naturalised daffodils are not producing many flowers, mark the clumps with a cane, feed them every couple of weeks, and then, in the autumn lift and divide the bulbs, replanting on a freshly prepared site.

Start dividing established or overgrown

clumps of herbaceous perennials such as helianthus, day lilies and bergenias. Discard outer, decrepit sections and replant only vigorous inner sections.

Get flower beds and borders ready for the year ahead. Apply a general fertiliser to the soil between plants. Mulch with a garden compost, well rotted manure or a proprietary compost or mulch mixture and carefully remove any weeds from around existing plants.

Feed established shrubs, trees, climbers and roses and water in well unless rain is forecast. Choose either a special rose or flowering shrub feed, or a general fertiliser, then top off with a 10cm deep mulch over the root area.

Don’t forget to order some vegetable plants for planting out once the frosts are

past, most seed catalogues offer these now, or visit my website, www.pippagreenwood.com for great plants and seeds plus weekly advice emails to make your veg growing easy.

Prune climbing roses, floribundas and hybrid tea roses and check for signs of over-wintering black spot disease – prune out stems showing tiny purple black spots.

Make sowings of early peas, beetroot, lettuce and chives, covering the soil with a cloche or fleece-covered tunnel for a week or so first helps to warm it up slightly and improves germination.

A Very Brown Hedge Indeed!Commonly referred to as Greenfly or Blackfly the Cypress Aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and spreading several varieties of virus, causing severe die back.

As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early andapplytreatmentstostopitsspread.TheCypress Aphid causes damage to western red cedar, lawson cypress, leylandii and monterey cypress. Aphids also indirectly damage car paintwork, patios and drives with honeydew, this a sugar rich sticky substance secreted by the aphids.

Control of aphids on woody and non-woody plants is possible, good cultural techniques can also help to reduce exploding populations. A combination of winter washing and spring treatments carried out by qualified technicians can achieve a good level of control, ensuring your trees and shrubs do not deteriorate further.

How long have you been interested in birdwatching?I have been interested in conservation and especially bird conservation for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is watching a kestrel hovering from my nursery playground and being the last one in because I wanted to see if it would catch anything.

What is your most memorable birdwatching experience?I was trying to catch spotted crakes on the Ouse Washes in Cambridgeshire so that we could attach radio transmitters to them and study their habitat use (they are secretive so this was the only way we could do it) . It meant we had to stay up all night in the middle of nowhere in semi-flooded grassland with a tape lure and a landing net.

What is your favourite thing about birdwatching? You get a real sense of the dangers birds face on migration if you visit somewhere like the Isle of May (in the Firth of Forth) in autumn. I was once there in a ‘fall’ (i.e. when birds become disorientated by fog or storms and have to try to make landfall fast). That night there were several goldcrests (the smallest birds in the UK) roosting in every thistle in the valley leading up to the lighthouse.

What are your proudest birdwatching achievements?I was on the Committee of the International Wader Study Group, which promotes research into wading birds, which breed in the arctic and travel through the UK to winter in Africa and edited their scientific journal for two years.

My last job was with the RSPB where I was a Reserves Ecologist for 7 years. This meant I travelled to reserves and gave wardens guidance on how to manage their reserves for birds and other wildlife. While I was with the RSPB I co-authored a book called ‘Bird Monitoring Methods’

I can also identify almost any bird commonly found in the UK by its call or song.

With your role as Haslemere Chamber President and shop, JL Nobbs, Do you still find time to birdwatch?I spend what little spare time I have taking part in bird surveys and I am due to become Treasurer of the British Ornithologists Union in April this year.

A spokesman from the Care Quality Commison explains, “The CQC's job is to make sure that care provided

by hospitals, dentists, ambulances, care homes and services in people’s own homes and elsewhere meets government standards of quality and safety. Everyone using these services is legally entitled to care or treatment that meets these standards.”

In order to operate, care and treatment services have to be registered with the Care Quality Commision.

When asked how CHD Living, a provider of residential care and home care across Surrey, South London and Middlesex, got ready for the commission, John Stanley, Operations Manager at CHD Living, said: “CHD Living prepared for changes in the CQC by considering, in detail, how best practice could be achieved. We encourage residents to contribute to the way things happen in our homes via regular residents and relatives meeting’s and forums, as well as encouraging our residents to take part in activities that are individual to their chosen life style; putting the resident back into the heart of the service that CHD Living provides. To date, the care quality Commission has worked in a positive way and in partnership with CHD Living to ensure that residents are involved in all aspects of their care and that they always

receive care that is safe and individualised. Of the four services CHD Living operates in Waverly, we are proud that three of them are fully compliant, one of which is Brownscombe House in Haselmere.”

As the fourth senior living development by Signature Senior Living, the brand new and purpose-built Moorlands Lodge nursing and care home at Hindhead, Surrey are well aware of its responsibilities under CQC registration.

Creenagh Williamson, General Manager at Signature Moorlands Lodge, said “Signature Senior Living are fully supportive of CQC objectives.”

As an ex-A&E Matron, Creenagh has extensive acute nursing care experience in both NHS and private health sector settings.

“From my time as a Matron, I had first-hand experience of care home residents occasionally being admitted to hospital in physical conditions that did not reflect well on the standard of care that they had been receiving. In the light of this, myself and my staff are therefore absolutely committed to meeting all CQC requirements, as well as exceeding them wherever possible.”

Signature Moorlands Lodge approve of the concept of an increase in the frequency of CQC inspections of nursing / care homes, recognising that this is an

important element in both understanding CQC objectives, building effective working relationships with the CQC and - most importantly - ensuring that optimum standards of care are the norm.

Brownscombe House, Hindhead Road, Haslemere 01428 643 528, www.chdliving.co.ukMoorlands Lodge Hindhead, Surrey 01428 605 396, www.signature-care-homes.co.uk

Why was it introduced? It replaced three earlier commissions: the Healthcare Commission, the Commission for Social Care Inspection and the Mental Health Act Commission. CQC is the first regulator to cover both social care for adults and health care (NHS and the private and voluntary sector).

How does the commission work?CQC monitors services that it registers and takes action if they are not meeting the essential standards. CQC monitors intelligence available about services, and carries out inspections on a routine and responsive basis. CQC also carries out programmed reviews into particular areas such as dignity and nutrition and learning disability services.

What happens if care homes don’t meet the regulations? Where CQC finds non compliance with the essential standards, it can request improvements are made to achieve compliance. If these are not forthcoming, CQC can take enforcement action which can include issuing a formal warning. If not complied with, enforcement action could escalate to fines, prosecution, the placing of restrictions on a service or the suspension or cancellation of a registration. The latter could lead to the closure of a service, but is always a last resort.

For more information on care services in your area, visit www.cqc.org.uk. You can also call their contact centre on 03000 61 61 61.

Boiling points By replacing a 10-year-old boiler with a modern condensing one you can improve the efficiency of your boiler to over 90% and save a minimum of 30% per year on your home heating bills and reduce your CO2 emissions.

Signs your boiler needs replacing Noisy pumps and cool radiators.Problems with hot water, a kettling sound or a flame that is not clear blue. What should I look for in a new boiler? “Quality and make of boiler are paramount when choosing a boiler, as the more technologically advanced manufacturer’s produce boilers with longevity and higher efficiency. The German models do surpass other makes because of their advancements in technology,” Allison at Grayshott Heating explains. “We highly recommend Worcester Bosch and Vaillant, and are offering five- seven years guarantee with Worcester Bosch and Vaillant on selected models (as the standard guarantee amongst other manufacturers’ tends to be five years).”

In addition to switching to a modern, condensing boiler there are some other measures you can take to saving energy and cost;

Turn your thermostat downIndependent thermostats are now required to control your central heating system. Reducing your room temperature by one degree could cut your heating bills by up to 10% and typically saves around £55 per year.

Heating ProgrammerIf you have a programmer, set your

heating and hot water to come on only when required, rather than all the time. Set your heating to turn off before you leave the house and to go off 30 minutes before you go to bed.

Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs)You can reduce the energy your existing boiler consumes by up to 40% with an efficient thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves. This is now a requirement on all new build installation.

PowerflushingOver time, your heating system will naturally accrue sludge and limescale in the bottom of radiators, in pipes and in your boiler. This also reduces the efficiency of your hot water system. You can usually restore your boiler’s efficiency and bring your heating system up to par by carrying out a chemical or power ‘flush’.

For further advice on your heating and energy saving contact Grayshott Heating.

Relight my fire Another great energy saver when heating your home is to install a firebox. A Jetmaster firebox is essentially an open fire but provides up to twice as much heat, which is controllable, thereby increasing your comfort levels and reducing your energy bills. Installation can also cost less than half that of a woodburning stove and often involves far less mess and disturbance to your property. To find out if you can install a firebox, call Hampshire Chimney Services on 01428 604292.

Bright lightsIn addition to turning lights off when you leave a room, you can save energy by replacing your traditional light bulbs with energy saving lighting options. Traditional light bulbs waste 95 per cent of the electricity they use in creating heat, this then adds to our carbon footprint. Energy saving LED lighting can cut up to 94% off your running costs and as they last for over 50,000 hours, they will also reduce your maintenance costs.

By emitting very little heat, LED lighting also reduces the fire risks in your home and your air conditioning bills in the summer.

DJK Renewables offer LED for interior down light replacement. LED lighting can also be used for exterior illumination to complete the perfect garden without the worry of running costs when hosting that important garden party or family BBQ. They also provide solar thermal systems, heat pumps, install boilers and are accredited Worcester Bosch installers.

Switch offLeaving household appliances on standby costs the home on average £40 a year. After using an appliance use the power switch on the appliance itself or turn it off at the plug. Remember to unplug phone and camera chargers after use.

While we all ‘know’ we should be doing our bit for the environment, it’s often hard to find the motivation to make our homes more energy efficient. However, by making simple changes you could save on average £250 a year on your fuel bills

Over the past year “dwelling burglaries” in the Grayshott area have doubled compared with a year earlier. Cllr. Ferris Cowper met Chief Inspector James Fulton, Hampshire Police’s District Commander for Winchester and East Hampshire and Sergeant Paul Bromell local Sector Sergeant, to discuss this worrying development.

Cllr Ferris Cowper found the local situation has become one of the key tasks within the countywide Operation Nemesis, which focuses management attention, intelligence gathering and officer time on this type of crime. As a result of a significant resource investment in the

Grayshott area by the Nemesis team, they have one person in custody and strong forensic leads likely to result in a further arrest.

The officers also made the point that several of the crimes, (but certainly not all), were facilitated by homeowners failing to take reasonable precautions. In one case a necklace was stolen through an open window, for example.

“With these detection successes, nobody needs to feel unduly afraid of crime, but all of Grayshott can take simple steps to help the Police and the community,” Cllr Ferris Cowper explains.

On Saturday the 25 February the wandering troubadors return as Grayshott Folk Club welcomes back The Acoustic Strawbs to Grayshott Village Hall.

Following on from their live performance there last May, the band will re-visit highlights of their wonderful back catalogue and mark the 43rd anniversary of their first album release on A&M Records.

The Acoustic Strawbs are made up of founder member David Cousins alongside Dave Lambert, and Chas Cronk, who formed the front-line of the 1970s Strawbs.

They have recently returned from a North American tour. See our What’s On Guide for full details.

Grayshott’s annual pantomime will be a special performance of Aladdin. The 26th since the original performance, the Grayshott ‘panto’ is produced, directed and performed by residents of Grayshott and other local communities, along with parents, staff and pupils from Grayshott School.

Performances in Grayshott Village Hall, take place on Friday 9 March at 7.30pm and on Saturday 10 March at 2pm and 5pm. Tickets, priced at £8 adult and £6 children and concessions, will be on sale at Grayshott Books in March.

Grayshott’s adventurous music promoters, Grayshott Concerts, are making headlines again with a concert at 7.30pm on Saturday 24 March featuring works by the world’s most performed living composer, Karl Jenkins, who is the community group’s Patron.

The performance at St Luke’s Church Grayshott, will include his Requiem, second only in popularity to the Armed Man, with top local choir, Excelsis, accompanied by the Marylebone Camerata and conducted by director of music, Robert Lewis. A choir of local young girl choristers from St Thomas-on-the-Bourne, Farnham, together with trebles from St Edmund’s School, Hindhead, have been specially selected and trained to perform sections of the work.

The programme also includes Jenkins’ dynamic violin concerto, Sarikiz, with Kazakhstan’s violin virtuoso soloist Marat

Bisengaliev, for whom the work was written, and will be conducted by the composer himself.

The concert opens with Hymn to the Word, for chorus and orchestra by Haslemere’s rising young composer Clive Osgood, specially selected by organisers to complement the programme.

Grayshott Concerts performances often sell out weeks in advance and this event is already attracting heavy bookings.

charity

The residents raised money for the local charity, Hounds for

Heroes as well as donating

to the Midhurst branch of Macmillan Cancer Support, the charity which provides practical, medical and

financial support to those with cancer, and their families.

The residents’ committee also ran a special fundraising coffee morning in September for Macmillan Cancer Support, organised by Bramshott Place Village’s first resident, Freddie Spink, raising £570 for the charity.

Funds were raised around the village from donations made for food and wine, and at the various fun stalls at the Country Fayre. A total of £375, was donated by the developer, Urban Renaissance Villages, to The Friends of High Hurlands Children, based in Passfield, near Liphook. The main aim of this charity is to provide 'the extras' for the residents who live

at High Hurlands Homes. High Hurlands Homes was set-up in 1971 and provides nursing, residential and day care for adults with severe learning and physical disabilities.

Finally, Bill Gair, who is also a Bramshott Place Village resident, grew an impressive moustache and raised over £2500! It was part of the Movember world-wide fund-raising event which takes place in November each year, aiming to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

Opened by siblings Helen, Kate and brother Angus, the

shop is named after a town in Holland where they grew up, Kate said “we wanted the name to be meaningful and represent our family going into business together. Our sole aim is to provide a fun and enjoyable shopping experience for women along with fantastic customer service.”

The store will be stocking an evolving line of labels including current brands such as Esprit, Nice Things and the unbelievably popular In-town Jeans! Alongside this there are some fabulous new brands arriving in 2012 such as the award winning Cocorose who this year will be collaborating with the Royal Ballet (pictured above) available from spring 2012. Another exciting brand to Hengelo is the stunning Oneseason, offering the perfect holiday wardrobe with clothing made in beautiful embroidered Indian cotton and silk. The tops have a

classic look with an array of soft neutral colours teamed with romantic prints. (photo)

If you are looking for a more casual look, then the ever vibrant French Connection will be in stock plus lifestyle brand Splendid is arriving all the way from California! Splendid clothing combines luxurious fabrics in unique colours dedicated to giving an effortless style for every day.
