This calendar year is almost over, but it won’t be going out without a BANG! Please

join us for the Grand Re-Opening of the Starpointe Residents Club on Thursday, December 3, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. where you can enjoy music, food, drink and the

“Wow Factor” of the club’s recent renovations.

You will be amazed at the new look of the pool area with the renovated slides, pools and furniture.  Also, all of the lighting has been updated and upgraded to LED lighting and the speakers replaced in the pool and outdoor patio areas.  The icing on top is the beautiful renovated furniture for the patio and pool areas with the addition of three cabanas to provide shade for residents who come to enjoy the pools on hot summer days.

Starpointe Residents Club interior has been revitalized with many new upgrades that include new lighting, stack stone feature walls, fresh paint on the exterior and café area and new décor.  From the patio, you can sit and relax in the newly reconditioned furniture with a beverage and hors d’oeuvres, while enjoying the beautiful new fountains that light up the North Lake with festive colors.  All of the work inside Starpointe Residents Club was done in-house by the dedicated CCMC staff that serves the residents of Estrella every day.

2015 has really been an exciting and active year for the community with several remarkable projects that have been successfully completed such as the pump station renovations

and electrical updates, the aeration system for the lakes, the fountains at North Lake, granite and plant replenishment, the removal of the hill at South Lake, asphalt repairs and sealcoat, concrete repairs and block/stucco and iron fence repairs and repainting in over 20 parcels and let’s not forget the new Presidio Residents Club that is emerging and expected to be completed by August, 2016.

We hope that everyone has an opportunity to stop by Starpointe on December 3 from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. to celebrate these accomplishments for 2015 and enjoy the beautiful upgrades to your club.

It has been a pleasure to serve the community in 2015 and on behalf of myself and all of the CCMC staff, we would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Holiday Season and a Healthy - Happy New Year!

Did you know that Santa and Mrs. Claus have their second home in Estrella? When in Estrella, they introduce themselves as Mr.

and Mrs. Sowers. Of course their main home is in the North Pole ... just in case you would like to write them in hopes you will get that special gift.

Instead of traveling in their sleigh with Rudolph and team for a photo shoot for Life In Estrella, they decided to come to Estrella in fashion by driving a red 1964 Chevrolet Malibu owned by an Estrella Mountain Car Club member.

The Estrella Mountain Car Club is planning a Car Show in Estrella in March 2017. They would appreciate your feedback to assist in their planning process for a successful event. Please take a moment to fill out their survey online at www.LifeInEstrella.com. All entries will be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card. The car club meets on the second Saturday of each month at 9:00 a.m. at Starpointe.

The annual coloring contest will be held from December 8–21.

Prizes will be awarded for various age groups. Stop by the PreSchooner Club and pick up a coloring sheet anytime the

club is open.

Estrella Wins at the Seventh Annual GEM Awards By Shirley Robertson, Communications Coordinator

On October 21, 2015 the Arizona Association of Community Managers (AACM) hosted its 7th Annual Guiding Excellence in Management

(G.E.M.) awards.

Awards are given to members in nine categories. CCMC was honored to have five finalists in four of the nine categories. While CCMC managers won in all four of the categories, one was significant for Estrella.

Our community manager, Lisa Lundskow, was the winner in the category for the Humanitarian Level II award. Eligibility for this award is limited to community managers for associations with over 300 homes and who have gone above and beyond in helping a

homeowner, their community, or cause within their community.

Lisa was extremely touched and humble when accepting the award. Her gracious acceptance was

extended to everyone who came together as one including Newland Communities, Fighter Country Partnership, Luke Air Force Base, the City of Goodyear, military personnel, business contributors, sponsors and over 250 volunteers from Estrella and CCMC that assisted in facilitating with the five day 24 hour event.

Congratulations to Lisa and all involved for their efforts to bring The Moving Wall™ to Estrella!

The holiday season is here, and it’s the perfect time to reflect on the past year and the things that have made an impact on our lives and the

greater community.

We look back on a year filled with meaningful community events and major amenity upgrades and announcements that sum up 2015.

We broke ground on a second residents club, Presidio, scheduled to open in the summer of 2016. We also introduced a newly renovated Information Center including an interior remodel, new technology, a self-service coffee bar and more.

It has also been a big year for our builders. AV Homes introduced a wealth of new amenities and upgrades to its 55-Plus community, CantaMia which included the addition of four Pickleball courts, two bocce courts, a tennis court, a 1,444 square-foot art studio, a desert succulent garden, circuit training equipment, two ramadas and a fenced dog park. Gehan Homes debuted the new neighborhood of Palazzo in our Montecito community with two models to tour and five home plans. Many of the other Estrella builders introduced brand new floor plans.

Our residents have been hard at work as well. The Estrella Trails Committee completed its newest trail in April. “Up There” is the latest in Estrella’s robust trail system of more than 20 miles of community hiking and bike paths. Through a community partnership with the City of Goodyear and West Valley Trails Alliance, the award winning bicycle “pump track” was also built and introduced at the Foothills Community Park next to Estrella Foothills High School in 2015.

Estrella played host to several events focused on healthy lifestyles and fitness, including the 3rd Annual Salute Our Troops Run, once again benefiting the Military Assistance Mission (MAM). Additionally, for the first time in Arizona, the very popular Flavor Run came to Estrella, and it was a huge hit with residents and non-residents alike.

Finally, art and cultural appreciation continued to be an essential part of life at Estrella. This year featured the second Goodyear Lakeside Music Fest (#GLM Fest), a celebration of the arts and featured more than half a dozen bands within a wide range of music genres. In

September, Ballet Arizona returned to the community bringing Ballet Under The Stars once again. We also saw the return of the Lakeside Farmers Market, which will continue on the third Saturday of every month through April 2016.

It was recently announced in the Estrella Blog that we are celebrating our 10-year anniversary of Newland being the developer of Estrella. Newland would like to thank each and every person who has positively impacted this community in the past 10 years. It has truly been an honor getting to know the residents, community partners, and Goodyear city officials. Thank you all for making 2015 one of our favorites in our 10 years together.

It’s been a busy year! We look forward to 2016 and the many great times ahead. As always, we value our amazing residents who make Estrella not just a community, but also a home.

LANDSCAPE>>> snippets

Estrella Landscaping Update & Lawn TipsBy Four Peaks Landscape Management, Inc.

As the year comes to a close, we would like to thank Estrella for allowing us to maintain the communities common area landscaping.

We are preparing for a very busy 2016 by working with both the management company CCMC and the Estrella Landscape Committee.

We will continue following the horticultural schedule that we have mapped out and as a result, we are seeing an improvement in the health of the landscaping. We will continue this schedule as we move forward into the new year.

Along with the landscape maintenance schedule, we have been completing additional projects including tree trimming, plant installations, granite refreshments and re-landscaping some areas in need of it.

We have also spent significant time cleaning up after a few serious storms that we experienced this past summer and fall, which even included a tornado! All in all, it has been a busy year.

We would like to take a moment and express our appreciation to all who have worked with us on the landscaping this past year. We have been working very hard to build a partnership with the Management Company CCMC, the Estrella Landscape Committee and residents. It is a true partnership based on trust and professionalism. We will continue to build and maintain this relationship as we remain to provide your landscape services over the next year.

Here are a few helpful home tips to help keep your landscaping healthy during the holiday season:

When stringing holiday lights outdoors on landscape plantings, wrap the plants lightly. Remove them as soon as possible after the holiday passes.

Cold weather typically arrives in full force about midmonth. When frost is forecast, wrap tender landscape plants with burlap or horticultural frost blankets.

Happy New Year, Estrella!

communityBah, Humbug by Heather HorrocksBy Estrella Book Club

Trying to get the right book for the holiday season presents challenges. It’s a season to be happy. But with all that’s going on, sometimes

everything isn’t rosy. Our book club selection for December hopefully will bring some lightness without too much drama to handle.

Bah, Humbug by Heather Horrocks is classified as a romantic comedy Christmas novella. So as not to spoil the reading of it, just expect the unexpected and sit back and enjoy the story. The storyline follows a would-be Martha Stewart-like television celebrity (Lexi Anderson) and the author (Kyle Miller) of a popular adventure novel series. Lexi’s children really like Miller’s adventure series and as fate or luck would have it, guess who they move next door to just before Christmas?

Come share your thoughts about this story with others who enjoy talking about books. As is our practice,

the book club member who suggested the book leads the discussion. This is going to be a lively, fun morning and can be the impetus needed to get through the holiday season less stressed.

This December 9 we will meet at Mimi’s Cafe’ at 10:00 a.m.. Mark your calendars for every second Wednesday of the month for our 2016 meetings.m. Looking forward to having you join us. Please call Nina Adair for more information: 623-810-3494.

Goodyear ranked Among Top 10 U.S. CitiesBy City of Goodyear PIO

The City of Goodyear has been recognized as one of the Top 10 Best U.S. Cities to live in, according to a poll released on Thursday,

November 5 by 24/7 WallSt.com.

To determine America’s best cities to live in, 24/7 WallSt.com reviewed data on the 550 areas measured by the U.S. Census Bureau with populations of 65,000 or more. City rankings were based on a range of variables, including: crime rates, employment growth, educational attainment and housing affordability. Goodyear was the only Arizona city ranked in the top 50. Meridian, Idaho was ranked first.

“We’re more than excited to be named among the Top 10 Best cities to live in,” said Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord. “Our last citizen satisfaction survey showed that 96 percent of the respondents likes living in Goodyear and would recommend it to others as a place to live. Clearly the word is spreading.”

Some of reasons 24/7 WallSt.com gave for the high ranking of Goodyear include: average household earns roughly $70,000 annually, nearly $20,000 higher than the median household income across Arizona; a lower poverty rate of 12.1% versus 18.2% for the state; and relatively safe place to live, with only 132 incidences of violent crime per 100,000 residents annually which is less than half of the state a whole.

Because of its importance, the labor market was one of the key measures 24/7 WallSt.com used to identify the best cities. In order to be considered, a city needed positive employment growth between 2011 and 2013 and an unemployment rate of no more than 9.8 percent, roughly one-third higher than the national rate last year.

24/7 WallSt is a New York-based corporation which operates a financial news and opinion company with content delivered over the Internet. The company’s articles are republished in many national media outlets including MSN Money, Yahoo!, Finance, Time.com, USA Today and Huffington Post.

For more information, visit: America’s 50 Best Cities to Live - 24/7 Wall St. http://247wallst.com/special-report/2015/11/05/americas-50-best-cities-to-live-2-2/#ixzz3qdmzOALI

CITY>>> city of gooDyear

2015 positions Goodyear for a bright 2016By Mayor Georgia Lord

The City of Goodyear had an exciting year in 2015, and I truly believe the future is even brighter.

Last year was motivating, especially in the way of growth and economic development projects that were announced or broke ground. Goodyear remains one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States – and it’s not by accident.

Attractive attributes throughout the city have strategically positioned Goodyear for future success. One being located along Interstate 10 and the recently-opened Loop 303. These critical roadways are attracting more businesses to Goodyear.

In 2015, everything from diverse dining options and the finest movie theatre to industry and manufacturing came to Goodyear.

If that wasn’t enough, at the State of the City Address in October, I was overjoyed to announce Byrd Hotel Group is planning to build a hotel just beyond centerfield at Goodyear Ballpark. Scheduled to open in 2017, it will be the largest hotel in Goodyear and no doubt will spur more long-awaited growth in that area.

More recently, one big announcement we were more than thrilled to hear was Goodyear being ranked 7th Best City to Live In by 24/7 WallSt.com. The rankings identified the Top 50 best cities in the U.S. and Goodyear was the only Arizona city on the list. I couldn’t agree with them more!

With Goodyear being just 12 percent developed, the city continues to map out its future. The hard work of our officials and city employees have helped make it possible as Goodyear prides itself on being business-friendly and an attractive place to live, work and play. The City of Goodyear plans to continue adding to the amenities of shopping, dining and quality community events as well as providing the best services possible.

In all, I would say 2015 was another “Great Year” in Goodyear and I believe 2016 will be even better.

I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season, and a prosperous new year.

Tis the season to be merry and bright and celebrate right … SAFELY! The Goodyear Police Department urges you to enjoy the

holidays safely and responsibly. If adults of legal drinking age choose to drink, please don’t drive! If alcohol is part of your holiday celebration, plan ahead and assign a designated driver.

According to MADD, the number of drunk drivers and alcohol related motor vehicle fatalities spikes dramatically over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. The Goodyear Police Department will take an active role in the West Valley DUI Task Force, which will be out enforcing traffic laws throughout the holiday season. Expect to see increased enforcement every weekend between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.

Some very sobering statistics according to MADD:

• In 2013, 10,076 people died in drunk driving crashes, that is one every 52 minutes, accounting for nearly one-third (31%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States; and 290,000 were injured in drunk driving crashes

• About one-third of all drivers arrested or convicted of drunk driving are repeat offenders

• The average person metabolizes alcohol at the rate of about one drink per hour

• Only time will sober a person up – drinking strong coffee, exercising or taking a cold shower will not help

• A standard drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits, which contain the same amount of alcohol

• Impairment is not determined by the type of drink, but rather by the amount of alcohol consumed over time

• Every day in the United States, 28 people die as a result of drunk-driving crashes

• Drunk driving costs the American people $199 billion a year

• On average, two in three people will be involved in a drunk-driving crash in their lifetime

The Goodyear Police Department wishes you and yours a safe holiday season and happy New Year!

SCHOOL BELL>>> Westar elementary

Students Climb High for the HolidaysBy Westar Elementary Student

With school events and holiday happenings, the month of December entails much on one’s calendar. However, one holiday

happening is a chance of a lifetime for some Westar students and a gift to be opened early this year. Mrs. Hopkinson, our physical education teacher, will take fifty fortunate students (6th-8th grades) on an awesome rock climbing trip to the Ape Index in Peoria. This rock climbing facility is completely indoors and the staff is awesome, helping climbers of all skill levels. This trip is so popular that Mrs. H plans to take this trip two times every year because the demand from students is so high. Typically, this field trip is filled within 30 minutes of accepting permission slips from the first 50 kids.

How did this come about? A few years ago, an indoor rock climbing wall was built at the school to give students a safe, but unique experience in pushing

themselves both physically and mentally. It was so popular that Mrs. H sought to take students to a place where they could soar to even greater heights. Mrs. H says climbing the wall is empowering and she enjoys watching students as they race to the top, defying their perceived boundaries. This is just one of the reasons she is much loved by her students. She is right there cheering her students on, and she says nothing compares to seeing her students reach the top of the wall for the first time. “The look on their faces is priceless,” she says and it is at this point that the lesson is learned. Her students begin to realize that with fortitude and hard work, they can do all that they set their mind to. Students may walk in to Ape Index being petrified of heights, but will walk out triumphantly with confidence and ultimately conquering their fears. This is just one of the many great hands-on experiences that Westar offers to its students.

Ever wondered why the neighborhoods of Estrella seem so quiet on a fall Saturday morning? It’s most likely because many of the families with young children are at the sports fields cheering on their fellow teammates of Estrella Youth Sports (EYS). It is a huge social gathering where neighbors catch up on the week’s events, and kids enjoy friendly competition on the playing field.

The EYS program organizes leagues, camps and clinics year-round for a wide variety of sports including flag football, basketball, soccer, tennis, girls volleyball, baseball and cheerleading. EYS is dedicated to teaching a healthy and active lifestyle, and promoting teamwork, camaraderie and friendship. The program is also great for parents and young adults to feed their passion for sports by volunteering to coach one of the EYS teams, prepping the fields or refereeing a game.

“I can’t express how thankful I am to this community for making our vision for EYS possible,” said Dale Kamarata, Executive Director of EYS. “Our organization is thriving and providing a fantastic outlet for children of Estrella to make friends, learn teamwork and stay active.” Since its inception in 2007, EYS has grown to well over 1,000 children who participate in the sports leagues regularly.

Kamarata also pointed out his great appreciation of having partners like Newland Communities for supporting resident-made and run organizations and the Liberty School District, Estrella Foothills High School and Estrella Mountain Church for providing the fields. Estrella Youth Sports is a fantastic example of how the community of Estrella has come together to support an organization that is instrumental in connecting residents, growing healthy families and building lasting friendships. EYS is available for children ages 3-14, visit http://www.eyskids.com for more information.

EYS is just one example of some of the great clubs and organizations available for Estrella residents. Visit www.lifeinestrella.com to learn more about other available opportunities to connect with fellow neighbors.
