A Forgotten Heritage

Join us for the interesting and little-known story of A Forgotten Heritage: The German Methodist Church on Thursday September 29th at 6:00 p.m. Author Barbara Dixon will

share the dynamic history of the Central District Conference - which once included Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Pittsburgh PA and Wheeling WV.

Barbara will begin by telling about William Nast’s founding of the German Methodist Episcopal Church in 1835 in Cincinnati and his ministry to the German-speaking

settlers throughout the Midwest. Through her personal research, travels, and from the diaries of her grandfather Theodore Rudin, who was a German Methodist minister from 1898 until 1934, she brings to life the pastors, parishioners, and conditions Pastor Rudin encountered in his travels.

Greenville had its own parish which was established in 1852. At that time it used the Wakefield Church for

services but then built its own church on Ash Street in 1856. It appears it eventually merged with the First M.E. Church around 1921 due to a decrease in German immigrants. The book contains much detail and many photos of the church buildings themselves.

Barbara’s book will be available for purchase after the presentation and refreshments will be served. The

Library appreciates Barbara’s donation of her book and is proud to have it in our collection!

Library Tours

T he public is invited to take a guided tour of the Library on Saturday September 17th from 12:00 to 2:00. Learn the stories, details, and history of this important landmark in our community. The tours are part of the statewide program “Ohio Open Doors” sponsored by Ohio History Connection (formerly the Ohio Historical Society) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Preservation Act which was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on October 15, 1966.

T his Act has been instrumental in preserving the historic fabric of our cities and neigh-borhoods by establishing the legal framework and monetary incentives necessary to save historic buildings, landscapes, and archaeology. This 50th anniversary is the perfect time to highlight the history and uniqueness of Ohio’s most treasured places.

T he Darke County Visitors Bureau is coordinating efforts in our area with the Library and the Memorial Hall among many sites “opening their doors” during the week of the 9th to the 18th. Please consult the local press and websites for more information. Come to the Library for a tour and refreshments!

Film Series Features Bright Star by David Nilsen

B right Star (2009) is a film of such tender, unguarded emotion, about such honest, bare affection, it could be written off by an immature viewer as a flight of romantic fancy. This would be a grave mistake. It is one of the truest cinematic documents of the human heart’s joys and losses committed to film in recent memory. It is a film of tremendous visual largesse, showcasing director (Jane Campion) and filmmaking team in

perfect sync and at the height of their powers.

T he film tells the story of the courtship of Romantic poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw) with his neighbor, Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish), when he is in his early twenties and she is in her late teens. The film views their courtship through Brawne's eyes with earnest emotion, and immerses us in the thrills and tragedy of their love doomed by the poet's failing health. Shot with dazzling visual skill, Bright Star is as visually rich as it is emotionally true.

Join us on Thursday September 22 at 7 p.m., for this gorgeous and powerful film. I will be leading a brief

discussion after the movie, and, as always, there will be free theater popcorn, candy, coffee, and Jones Soda. We hope to see you there.
