“Fright Night Friday”

Already the Library is getting pretty scary and Halloween is weeks away! That’s because everyone is gearing up for a “haunted library” on Friday,

October 31st from 7:00 to 11:00 (the Library will be closing early at 4:00). Mark your calendars for “Fright Night Friday!”

T his event is being conducted by Gateway Youth with assistance from other community groups such as ACES kids, Darke County Recovery staff, Library staff, and the GHS theater group. They’re busy building scenes and characters and preparing costumes and makeup.

Some of the scenes encountered along the pre-designated route will be a chamber of horrors, a zombie graveyard, a mad scientist’s laboratory, a

haunted maze, and the usual witches, monsters, and aliens. Be prepared to be surprised, shocked, and spooked!

Price is $5 per person at the door. “Fright Night Friday” is a fundraising event for Gateway which is a non-profit. As Prevention Specialist Rob Folker

explains, Gateway is a program that helps kids in many ways such as resolving socialization issues, improving grades, learning good manners, helping with stress and family dynamics, and becoming involved in the community.

For instance the kids helped the Library three times this past summer with the set-up and take-down for Lunch on the Lawn. They enjoyed how people

responded to their work efforts and the satisfaction of helping out. They also became interested in becoming Library patrons.

Gateway also hosts a supervised req center and has a summer program which this past year consisted of working at the city park, field trips, and “boot

camp” exercise. Referrals come from various sources such as the schools or courts. More info at gatewayyouthprograms.org.

breaking through the boards trying to keep them at bay! We don’t know what kind of situations to expect between now and Halloween. Just be sure to join us that night for the fright of your life!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

T he Library is again hosting a very special Breast Cancer Awareness display on the first floor. Debb Summers, a popular hairdresser at Creations Hair Studio in Greenville, shared a photo journal of her experience with breast cancer. The pictures were taken at key points during her treatment and chronicle important milestones in her journey. At the one-year mark Debb had a family photo taken, the last in the series.

T he Library is grateful to Debb for sharing her experience as an inspiration to other women and their families. Information & materials from Wayne Healthcare are also available at the display and proceeds from the donation box by Circ Desk will go to Breast Cancer research. As a way to draw attention to this important issue the Library staff will be wearing pink boas throughout the month of October! When patrons ask, staff can refer them to the display.

Summer Flowers & Butterflies

Again the Library wishes to thank Richard Halley of Richard’s Custom Stone & Garden for the beautiful landscaping and flowers this summer. The beds are not only full of

color and texture but are an official Kansas University “Monarch Watch” waystation. The number and kinds of plants needed to be registered provide a place for the butterflies to lay eggs and food for the caterpillars. For instance they love tropical milkweed which blooms all season (contact Richard if you would like seeds). This year many caterpillars and butterflies were seen which is a good sign their populations are increasing.

Chi Gung at the Library

Jesse Berry from Young Forest Martial Arts Academy will demonstrate and discuss the Chinese art of Chi Gung (Qi Gong) on Thursday, October 2nd at 6:30 p.m. at the Library.

Chi Gung is a practice for aligning body, breath, and mind for health, meditation, and martial arts training. It’s traditionally viewed as a practice to cultivate and balance chi (qi) or what has been translated as "life energy".

T he program will consists of still and moving Tai Chi and Chi Gung meditations that promote optimal health and vitality. Jesse has over ten years experience teaching and training in all areas of martial arts. He also gives lectures and seminars on the history and philosophy of traditional and modern martial arts.

About 15 years ago Jesse was looking for a martial art for his daughter and found a kwoon (school or dojo) in Eaton Ohio. He began studying Kung Fu himself and in ten

years became a master or Sifu. His academy teaches both Kung Fu and Tai Chi/Chi Gung to people of all ages. He is currently chief editor of an online martial arts publication, Tea Warrior, www.teawarrior.com, and is in the process of publishing a novel on martial arts and tea culture.

Y oung Forest Martial Arts is located at 120 West Third Street, Greenville, behind the Blue Lantern Tea Shop. The tea shop is also owned and operated by Jesse & wife Kim and

carries a wide variety of artisan quality teas from around the world as well as tea ware, jewelry, soaps, and more, www.bluelantern.com. Jesse is seen standing by a display.

Jesse explains “Our objective at Young Forest is to teach children and adults character

development and life skills through martial arts - as a way to help build strong families and strong communities. It all starts with the individual.”

Many patrons enjoyed Jesse’s traditional Chinese Tea Ceremony last winter - which

the Library will host again this coming January. Come and enjoy another enlightening program and learn about the possibilities offered from Chi Gung! See www.youngforestmartialarts.com.

Staff Lounge Upgrade

T he staff lounge upgrade was a project taken on by Julie Schmidt and Reuben Kennett, seen below in the new and improved kitchen space on the third floor. As Julie explained “We wanted to add a homey touch“ with pretty towels, wall decorations, and a wood counter. The lounge/kitchen is a place where the staff can get away, take a break, eat lunch, store their food, read or watch TV, and have a little privacy.

T he first item to be replaced was the refrigerator with the old one going to a needy family. Other new appliances were a toaster oven, a toaster, a coffee-maker, and a Keurig one-cup coffee/tea maker. New bowls and cups were also added.

A very nice feature is the flat screen TV which is hooked up to cable.

Staff can catch a favorite soap, ball-game, or news show during lunch. The lounge is just another way the Library can express its appreciation to its hard-working employees. Thanks to Julie and Reuben for doing such a great job!
