“A Novel Idea” Bookclub by Caitlyn Clark

W e are very excited to announce the launch of “A Novel Idea,” GPL’s newest book club. For April, our group read Kristin Hannah’s The Great Alone, an Alaskan story about

family and survival. In May, we’re reading The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. The book details the story of a genetic scientist’s endearing adventures (misadventures?) as he

designs The Wife Project, a test that he hopes will identify “his perfect partner.” Copies of The Rosie Project will be available for patrons to check out on Wednesday May 1st.

W e plan to meet every 3rd Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. Upcoming dates are May 21st,

June 18th, July 16th and so on through December. Please contact me at 548-3915 if you are interested in joining the Club!

May’s Lunch & Learn

T he Library’s May Lunch & Learn will feature Erica Menke from Nature’s

Heart Yoga, as she explains and demonstrates Thai Yoga Massage.

From Erica: “Thai Yoga Massage is a dynamic form of bodywork in which the

practitioner moves the client in a variety of yoga-like positions while stretching, rocking & compressing their muscles in each pose. It is also an energetic practice of Metta (Loving Kindness) in order to encourage the development of positive, healing energy in both the practitioner & client.”

L unch is noon Wednesday May 15th. Please register at 548-3915!

Art Exhibit at Library

T he Library was proud to host the 2019 2nd Annual K-6 Elementary Art Exhibit in

the second floor Reference Room. The exhibit first hung in the Anna Bier Gallery and was in the Library the month of April. It was a joy to display the colorful and original works by our up-and-coming young artists!

L ibrarians Deb Cameron and Candace Henne have partnered with Tamara

McNulty of the Anna Bier Gallery to host this and future exhibits. Stay tuned for notice of our next show!

Babette’s Feast at Third Floor Film Series by David Nilsen

T he Third Floor Film Series will screen the 1987 Danish film Babette's Feast in May. The film was directed by Gabriel Axel and was based on a story written by Isak Dinesen, the

pen name of author Karen Blixen (Out of Africa).

T he film is set entirely in a remote village on the coast of northern Denmark in the 19th century. Two elderly sisters—

the daughters of the deceased pastor who founded the small parish—serve as the aging and isolated community's de facto leaders. They are surprised one day when a refugee fleeing violence in Paris arrives at their door asking only for a place to stay in return for housework and cooking. Babette (Stèphane Audran) works for them for many years, but when she wins a lottery in her native France, the sisters assume she will be leaving. Instead, she prepares a feast for the townsfolk, whose austere strictures threaten to prevent their enjoyment of her gift.

Join us on Tuesday May 7 at 6:30 p.m., as we screen Babette's Feast. The film is rated G with a running time of

102 minutes. Free popcorn, candy, and soft drinks will be provided, and I will lead a brief discussion after the film. We hope to see you there!

Book Donations

T he Ladybug Garden Club recently donat-ed Heirloom Country Gardens by Sarah

Wolfgang Heffner. And the Towne Square Quilt Club donat-ed String Fling by Bonnie K. Hunter. Many thanks for these generous gifts! Both Clubs gave interesting demos this spring and are annual favorites with our patrons!

Library a Connect with Nature Site by Deb Cameron

W e are thrilled to announce that the Library has been named "A BEST IN OHIO CONNECT WITH NATURE SITE." We are one of two libraries in the state of Ohio to

have this honor! We are committed to leave no child inside and to provide connections to nature for our community.

T he Leave No Child Inside Collaborative is open to schools and sites devoted to encouraging

outdoor involvement and promoting children to explore nature. For more information on how you can get involved visit: https://ohiolnci.org.

On Saturday March 30th librarians Rachel Brock, Amanda Olson, and myself received recognition

at Brukner Nature Center in Troy. We had filled out a 14-page entry document called “Challenge: Be the Best Community Site for Connecting Kids to Nature.” Posters are now on display throughout the Library and soon a standing sign will be commemorating the award in the front foyer.
