Front cover: The crocus is coming: I saw my first one of the season last week at Cotehele. Funny weather: snowdrops cascading down the hedge-banks and bats on the wing! Hopefully there are enough flying insects to make food for the bats. This is the hungry time of the year for much of our wildlife: are you leaving any food out for it?
Editorial
I’m keeping my editorial very short this month: no doubt this will please the person who emailed me to say I wasn’t fit to edit a parish magazine - something to do with my having an opinion. But at the same time, I must be doing something right judging by your many kind comments about the magazine. Thank you! I’ll try to remain neutral and not mention the dreaded ’B’ word until it’s all over!

NEW LOCAL AUTHOR!
This Sacred Land is the newly published first book in The Chronicle of the Dewnan series, by local author Tim Bagshaw.
Set in the Tamar Valley, along the north and south Cornwall
and Devon coasts and in Brittany, it tells the story of the first of the great Arthurs (or ‘Artur’ in This Sacred Land), the son
of the bear king, and his struggle against treachery, invasion
and the might of Julius Caesar in the middle of the first century BC.
Passionate about the place he lives in, and through a combination of walking, observing and living in the landscape,
and a keen interest in lost and forgotten histories, Tim has created a new take on the story of Arthur, where the legend begins far earlier, with a
valiant stand against the inevitable advance of the Roman legions.
Victory is never certain, but however it ends, this is a story of intrigue, passion and
friendships formed for all time.
This Sacred Land is available on Amazon, Apple Books and in book shops. If you would like to know more, please follow Tim on either Twitter (www.twitter.com/
@bagshaw_tim) or his Facebook page (www.facebook.com/dewnanchronicle).

TREBULLETT METHODIST CHURCH
(contribution by Jill Price and Ann Foster)
Our Christmas events started at the end of November with our annual meal and
entertainment. A penguin and its baby from the North Pole interacted with the
audience after all had enjoyed their excellent meal. The penguin was quickly followed by old time-musical based on romance from Richard and Sheila followed
by Edward and Charlotte bringing decorum to the proceedings with their musical talents. And then we are asked what’s wrong with residents of a care home
going to a spa? Nothing when the effects were seen - the before and after ably performed by a group of ladies. With James Rider attempting to MC the
proceedings there was plenty of laughter as a pantomime dame shared her
thoughts with the audience.
Our Christmas events all proved very popular and well attended. On Sunday 16th
December, there was carol singing around the Christmas Tree on Trebullett Green. We were so lucky with the weather as the morning and early afternoon
had been rainy and damp but by the early evening the sky had cleared and it
was nice and dry. Between 50 and 60 people came along and joined us and we were accompanied by an 8 piece band which made the singing even more
joyous. Afterwards all those present enjoyed hot soup to warm them on a cold night. Perhaps another event like this next year.
Trebullett’s Carol Service was on Sunday 23rd December when between 60 and
70 people gathered at our chapel for a Nativity with a difference. Granny Christmas arrived in her time machine on a quest to discover what Christmas
was all about. We looked at Christmas 2018 before travelling back in time to meet Isaiah and Micah who, 700 years before the time of the Nativity, foretold
the coming of Jesus the Messiah. Our next stop was a powerpoint presentation of the nativity story told in rhyme, reminding us of the first Christmas and the
reason why we celebrate Christmas today. The young people from Kidz Aloud
took part and afterwards we all enjoyed the Christmas Tea which was served in the Hall.
On Christmas Day the chapel was again full for Revd Jo’s Christmas Morning Service. As always, this was a happy occasion with lots of greetings of Happy
Christmas and the singing of much loved carols. The children brought along
some of their presents which was lovely to see, including a bike! Revd Jo set us an emoji quiz which was enjoyed by us all but us grown ups got very much left
behind in the solving – the children knew what all of them were. We left the chapel feeling full of joy at the birth of Jesus so many years ago and, in the
present, looking forward to our own family celebrations.
A little late as this is the February issue, but all the members of Trebullett
Methodist Chapel would like to take this opportunity of wishing you all a very
happy and healthy 2019.

PARISH NOTICES Road Monitoring and Safety at Treburley: The Parish Council recently arranged for the A388 through Treburley to be monitored in terms of vehicle speed and traffic vol-ume. The road was continuously monitored over an eight day period - 24 hours a day. The findings show a good level of compliance over the period in terms of speed. The Council, however, remains committed to continuing to monitor the road for any safety issues. In addition, the Parish Council has been successful in obtaining funding from the Community Network Highways Budget to build a pedestrian traffic island as a crossing point at Treburley. This will enable the safe crossing of pedestrians across the A388 and may also reduce the speed of vehicles travelling through the village as pedestrian refuges narrow the road. It is expected that this should be completed in the next 2 years.
Phone Boxes at Higher Larrick and Trekenner: It has been brought to the Council's attention that the phone boxes at Higher Larrick and Trekenner are in a state of disre-pair. The Council would like to ask residents whether they want to keep the phone boxes in the parish and, if so, any ideas of what could be done with them and how people want them used? Please email the Clerk on [email protected] with your thoughts or if you would be happy to help with maintenance - all materials would be provided. A resident has kindly volunteered to paint the phone box at Trekenner.

Lezant Flower and Garden Group
At the October meeting our members enjoyed an interesting talk by Dr Frances Howard on the history of Daffodils in the Tamar Valley, plus a few hints on how to display daffodils for showing. It was an illustrated talk and traced the earliest varieties in the 1600s to some of the ones we grow now. The Tamar Valley and other parts of Cornwall were the main suppliers of early daffodils to the London markets as they were sent by train. However, with the closure of most of the branch lines in the 1960s, this industry ended. Local daffodils are still available for sale but the large fields of these lovely flowers are gradually disappearing. During the two World Wars, flower growing had to cease but the bulbs were kept by being placed into hedgerows. These are also not so prolific nowadays, but Dr Howard said that she and other enthusiasts are working to ensure our native ones are kept.
A floral art demonstration on Wednesday 21st November by Charlotte Dawe from Launceston’s Flower Scene rewarded the excellent turnout to a colourful and festive display! We were lucky to have Charlotte as she is effectively on maternity leave until next March, so slightly disappointed that she didn’t bring in baby Harrison to meet us! Charlotte talked us through producing four beautiful arrangements whilst demonstrating her skill which has previously led to Silver and Silver Gilt awards at the Chelsea Flower show. The arrangements were much admired and then, together with surplus flowers, were raffled off to several lucky members of the audience. The meeting concluded with refreshments supplied by Joy and Jan and an opportunity to speak to Charlotte and each other.
We would love to see some new members – it is only £10 per year, so do come along to one of our events – you won’t be coerced into anything! The programme for February – June is as follows:
20th February, 7.30 p.m. Lezant Church Rooms – a talk on ‘The Garden at Andrew’s Corner’ – 50 years of gardening on Dartmoor. We will visit in June.
20th March, 7.30 p.m. Lezant Church Rooms – an Easter flower arrangement workshop led by local florist Louise Trenerry.
17th April – Afternoon visit to Bodmin Nurseries – meet by the Church Lychgate, time to be announced.
15th May – Afternoon visit to The Garden House at Buckland Monachorum – time t.b.a.
19th June – visit to Andrew’s Corner Garden, time to be arranged Rosemary Buckler and Shirley Ough

Lezant Horticultural Society
Well, Christmas and New Year have come and gone and we have all settled back to normality after the festivities. As mentioned in the previ-ous diary, the Society is holding its Annual Dinner on Saturday 2nd
March 2019 at Trethorne Leisure Park. You may have noticed the deliberate error in the previous diary as it stated Saturday 3rd March which is obviously incorrect as the 3rd is a Sunday! Tickets cost £17.50 each and are available from any committee member. The price includes one of Trethorne's famous carveries, a dessert and tea, coffee and mints after dinner. Vegetarian options are available, please ask a committee member for de-tails. The dinner is, of course, followed by the first of the Society's 2 Prize Draws, (the sec-ond being held on Show Day in August). This evening is always well attended and enjoyed by all who come.
We have now arranged a date for our Daffodil Show which will be on Saturday 16th March 2019 in Lezant Church Room. It is always hit and miss whether the daffodils will be out in time, or indeed have already come and gone! However, there have always been enough daffodils in bloom to hold a very successful show. The entry forms and schedule will be placed in the March diary. The schedule will be available in the diary to cut out and post to me or entries can be placed by phone, text or email. Most of us can find some daffodils growing in our gardens to enter a few classes, so please keep an eye on them and earmark them for the show. If you have never shown before and are unsure as to what to do, please feel free to ask me or any other committee member and we'd all be happy to help. You will find enclosed in this diary, a letter from our Chairman, Mrs Mary Crew. This is our annual appeal letter. The Society is very grateful for all donations received whatever the amount. We would be very pleased if you could read this letter and respond to it if you are able.
We look forward to seeing you in the near future. Many thanks! Janet Wild, Secretary.

TREBURLEY SOCIAL CLUB
We have had a busy and successful couple of months at the club. On Saturday
24 November the club hosted its very popular Christmas Market. There were lots
of stalls, selling cakes, soaps, cards, Christmas gifts and other interesting items.
Tea and coffee were served along with sandwiches and cakes. The market raised
over £150 which was sent to Cancer Research. Many thanks to all who supported
and contributed to the success of this event.
We had a packed club for our highly
entertaining Carol night in December.
Around 80 people enjoyed singing
Christmas songs and carols, with
mince pies and sherry being served
during the evening. The atmosphere
was brilliant and it was a great way to
start the festive season.
Our Christmas draw took place on
Friday 18 December; during November and December we sold over 1300 tickets.
There were over 50 prizes to be won, some people were unlucky this time but
others took home several! To copy a well known slogan “You have to be in it to
win it” so better luck for Christmas 2019. Seeing the old year out and the new in
was celebrated with friends, dance, food and music from Johnny M. This evening
was also very well attended with over 80 people taking full advantage of our well
stocked and very reasonably priced bar. There was also a buffet with lots of
choices of food so no one went home hungry.
Want an idea for somewhere to go to celebrate St Valentine’s day, and not take
out a mortgage? Then why not join us at the Treburley Social Club on Saturday
16 February, at 6:00 for a 6:30 start. Tickets cost just £12 per person and this
includes a sit down meal of two meats, salads, puddings, cheese and biscuits and
tea or coffee. After our meal we will be entertained by Phil G. Please let Cindy
Wills know if you would like to come, this is always a very popular event so don’t
leave it too late to reserve your ticket. Dates and times of upcoming events are
detailed on the What’s On Posters displayed on the notice boards around the
local villages and in this magazine.

LEZANT WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
At our January meeting we welcomed Pat Mallett who demonstrated and creat-ed a 'Liberty Lawn' print necklace. The members then went on to make and create similar necklaces. If you want to make your own:-
Take a piece of material, measure and cut a strip 30” long and 3” wide. Place right side material to right side material and backstitch from bottom corner across at a right angle to the top raw edge and a ¼” in from the top of the raw edge. Backstitch all the way along to within 3”. Turn the tube of material right way around. Then place a ring bead on top of the material then place a bead inside the material and then follow with a ring bead on top. Either use 6 internal beads and 7 ring beads outside or 8 internal beads and 9 outside beads. Slip stitch along the top piece left open and se-cure. You then have a completed necklace ready to wear!
The next WI meeting is on Wednesday 13 February 2019 at 2pm. AGM fol-lowed by a quiz. Visitors and new members always welcome. Contact Alice Brown Tel: 01566-777485.

WE NOW HAVE A TREE WARDEN!
Her name is Carolyn Ayres and you can contact
her by phone: 01579 370886
or by Email: [email protected]
The Tree Council launched the Tree Warden Scheme in 1990 and it is designed to harness the power of local volunteers for the good of their communities’ trees.
The Tree Warden Scheme offers us the chance to champion our local trees and woods through practical projects. We work closely with local authority offic-ers and conservation bodies with help and advice on where to find information. We are not experts but we can help you find access to expertise where needed. The Neighbourhood Development Plan which will shortly go ’live’ showed that many of the parish community wanted to see a ’greening’ of our countryside and trees play an important part in this. So, get in touch if you have an idea...
OBITUARY—MRS VAL BUGDEN CAWSEY
It is with sadness that we heard that Val Bugden-Cawsey passed away on Saturday 5th January, at home with her family.
Her funeral is to be held at Central Methodist Church in Launceston at 11am on Tuesday 5th February.
Val was a great friend to this parish from when she and Terry moved in 1999 to The Firs at Little Comfort. While she lived in Lezant Parish, she was a Parish Councillor, a church warden at St Briochus, a member and one time President of Lezant WI and a founder, with Ruth Burden and Veryan Milne Home, of the Lezant Lunch Club. We greatly missed her when she moved to Launceston.
Val lived a rich life and following her diagnosis of Advanced Malignant Melano-ma last year she channelled her remarkable energy into fundraising. It was her hope that Val's Malignant Melanoma Appeal will continue to raise funds af-ter her death.
Anyone who would like to donate safely and securely can do so here https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/val-walks-tall.
The thoughts of all of us in the parish who knew Val are with her family and friends. She will be sincerely missed.
Rest in Peace Val.

OBITUARY—EVELYN MARY WADE (MARY) Mary was a well known and much loved lady who lived in Treburley for many years after she and her husband, Bill, moved to Cornwall. She was born on 19th April 1930 in Little Common, near Bexhill on Sea, in Sussex. From the stories she told, it is apparent that she and her sisters didn’t have an easy life as children. She always said that the proudest moment of her life was when she married Bill on 25th March 1950 just before her 20th birthday. Mary and Bill became foster parents to Michael and then adopted Nick and Dawn and the family increased with grandchildren. When Mary and Bill moved to Treburley, they lived in Treburley Close and then after some years they moved to one of the bungalows in Monks Hill, where Mary lived until she was admitted to hospital following a fall. Mary worked in Normans Cash and Carry for many years and maintained several friendships that she made while working there. She was a hard worker and always wanted to look good and for her home to be clean and shining and welcoming. Bill died in 2003 and, although Mary missed him terribly, she continued to be an independent person, enjoying her Bingo and nights out at Treburley Social Club. She enjoyed stamp collecting and watching sport on TV particularly the tennis, snooker and football. She was (as Bill had been) a long time supporter of Chelsea Football Club. She had many friends in Treburley and in the Parish, many of whom helped her so that she could maintain her independence and stay in her bungalow at Monks Hill. Unfortunately, after a fall and admission to Derriford and then Launceston Hospital, it became impossible for her to return home and she spent the last few months at Springfield Nursing Home where she was well cared for until she passed away. Mary will be sadly missed by her family and by all her friends in Treburley and in the parish.
OBITUARY—BOBBY BOBIN
Bobby was born on the 4th December 1925 in Brighton. When she was 18 months old the family moved from Brighton to Walthamstow. She met Don in 1943 and they married in August 1946. Bobby and Don lived in Walthamstow, where they raised 4 children until they retired and moved to Cornwall in 1988. Bobby was Southern Counties Gymnas-tics Champion in her early 20s/ Having dabbled with piano lessons when young, Bobby started lessons again when married. Twenty years later she started to play the electric organ which she loved and was a mem-ber of clubs both in Walthamstow and in Cornwall. Although she was a late learner, once she could drive she took it up with enthusiasm and drove right up until her latter years when she allowed others to drive her. Dancing was always a love and shared with Don, who was known for his prowess on the dance floor. They were members of a dance club in Tresmeer. In more recent times she has been known to enjoy, in her language, a ‘bit of a jig’ at the Treburley club on a Saturday night! When they bought the bungalow in Treburley there was no real garden so they set about planning and planting. The garden became a real love and Bobby would potter away for hours. After Don died, Bobby became involved with The League of Friends at Launceston Hospital, The Good Companions , Lezant Lunch Club, several groups from U3A and was an active member of the Launceston Lions. Bobby was a much loved mother and her family miss her greatly as do all her friends in Lezant and elsewhere.

TRE POL AND PEN – LEZANT’S NEW FARM SHOP AND CAFE
Richard and I paid our first visit to Tre Pol and Pen three days after it had opened. I
had looked forward to my first visit and I wasn’t disappointed. The shop is light and
airy and stocks a multitude of superb foods. Fresh greengrocery, milk (including milk in
glass bottles), juices, bread, some wonderful oils and dry goods including pulses and
cereals. There is a butcher’s counter with lots of choice and a deli too. The cheese dis-
played is all artisan – if you are a lover of good cheddar try the Black Bomber. I can
recommend it. At the end of the shop are cards made by local people including Joy
Ford, Faith Chevannes and Leah and Libby, pottery, soap and other crafts. Then into
the café/restaurant which is light, airy and comfortable. We just had a coffee and cake
but others were eating lunch which looked delicious. The staff are all friendly and very
helpful. This shop is just what Lezant needs. Good quality local (as far as possible) food
and somewhere near to meet friends for coffee or lunch or perhaps breakfast.. The
shop is open from 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday with the café 8am to 4.30pm. On
Sundays the shop is open 8.30am to 5pm with the café from 8.30am to 4.30pm. If you
aren’t sure where it is, Tre Pol and Pen is situated off the A388 between Penscombe
Farm and the Lezant turn. Jill Price
